Quick Look

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta brings back all the qualities that have made its predecessor a bestseller, including superb driving dynamics, excellent design and plenty of interior comfort and convenience. It also has a wide selection of engines to satisfy almost any desire – affordability, performance and efficiency (despite the fact that the diesel models have come under fire recently).

Full Review

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is one of the most versatile vehicles on the market, which is probably why it has become so popular over the years. Looking for a spacious yet affordable economy car, try the base S trim. Need a fuel-saving hybrid or diesel vehicle? Jetta got those covered. Want a performance-driven sedan that feels like a BMW or an Audi, but for a relatively low price? Go for the GLI trim. The only real issue with the 2016 Jetta and its predecessors is its overly conservative design; it’s like a white wall – there is no flavour to it.

Exterior design is where the Jetta’s competitors, such as the Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra and to an extent even the new Dodge Dart, have it beaten. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the way the Jetta looks. Think of the design as a functional grey or black suit – it’s classy but not terribly interesting. If you are okay with that, then you will love this car’s clean look. Conversely, the GLI injects a bit of excitement into the lineup thanks to its dynamic new front end, smoked taillights, dual exhaust tips and 18-inch alloy wheels.

When it comes to cabin space of a five-passenger compact car, the general rule is not to expect much. In spite of that, the 2016 Jetta delivers plenty of space – though the back seat seems to lack some legroom, particularly when compared to the Elantra and Cruze. However, it makes up for that with a relatively roomy cargo area that spans 15.5 cubic feet. If you need even more space, you can always fold the back seats. In terms of design, the Jetta’s cabin is just conservative as the exterior, which is not a bad thing – it just won’t appeal to everyone. You will find plenty of advanced tech features here, including adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking, with all the functions neatly arranged without an excessive amount of buttons or overly complex screens. High-quality materials are abound as well, but just like everything else here, they don’t necessarily stand out.

Under the hood, the new Volkswagen Jetta can have a wide variety of engines – five of them, to be specific. The S and SE trims come with a 1.4-litre direct-injection turbo engine that can produce 150 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, while being connected to a five-speed manual gearbox or six-speed automatic with Sport mode. Move a little bit higher and you will be treated to a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that can produce 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, with the same transmission options as the 1.4-litre variant. The GLI version has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that can pump out 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, while being connected a six-speed auto or six-speed manual transmission. The hybrid variants comes with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor, both of which are connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Their combined output is 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the TDI models have a 2.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder that produces 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, being connected to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

You may wonder if the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is for you… If you are looking for a relatively affordable vehicle, priced between $15,000 and $30,000, with plenty of space and a wide variety of engines, then yes, you should. It may not be the flashiest option out there, but it is one of the most versatile.

Power and Performance:

The S and SE are powered by a brand new 1.4-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine. Mated with either a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an available 6-speed shiftable automatic gearbox, this brand new mill puts out 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and while no official figures are available yet, VW claims the S/SE's highway fuel efficiency is around 39 mpg. Returning for the upcoming year’s Jetta SEL and 1.8T Sport iterations is a 1.8-liter turbocharged I4 that produces 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque with either the 5-speed manual transmission or the 6-speed shiftable automatic. Look for an estimated 25 mpg city/37 highway/29 combined with the manual and 25/37/30 with the automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

For a compact car, the 5-passenger 2016 Jetta sedan by Volkswagen has good interior space, although rear-seat legroom lags behind the Hyundai Elantra and Chevy Cruze. Especially notable is the amount of cargo space behind the rear seat. At 15.5 cubic feet, the sedan's trunk is in a higher league, and when you need even more room the rear seats fold. Design-wise, the Jetta's interior could be called "minimalist-chic." Advanced technology and a plethora of high-quality materials are laid out in a simple, easy-to-use format devoid of multiple buttons and overly complicated screens.

Safety features:

Every 2016 Volkswagen Jetta comes standard with traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. All but the base S without the Technology package comes with a rearview camera. The 1.8T and TDI SEL trims are available with the Driver Assistance package that adds a frontal collision warning and automatic emergency braking, a blind-sport monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.
