Volkswagen has done a great job with their new 2016 Golf GTI. The looks on it are very stylish and are definitely turning heads as it is on the road. On top of the good looks, it’s also got great power for its kind.

Full Review

The new 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI is starting to get a lot of people looking into it with its stylish looks. They have done a great job by redesigning this model in the past and continued to maintain the buzz about it. Volkswagen has done a great job to reach out to drivers and make minor changes to give it an edge.

The exterior shows Volkswagen is sticking with their usual grille style, a rectangular shape complemented with a bar going through it. On the bar, the logo is placed on the middle of the front view. Volkswagen seems to love the shape of their headlights since they have kept that size for a while now. However, with their classic headlights shape they have decided to change up the look from the inside by using LED lighting which gives it that stylish and sporty look they seem to be going for. Most hatchbacks usually go for a rounder shape with their headlights to represent and complement the round shape the vehicle is, but with the Golf GTI it seems like the lights are a bit edgy and pointy to be considered round at all. This may be another factor that makes it look different than others. Moving on to the rear view, we can see they have used a very similar style tail lights with edgy sides. They have also designed a spoiler with the overbite of the roof over the cargo door causing the hatchback to look sporty. Volkswagen has also included a tiger clawed design all over the car, which adds on to the sporty look it is going for.

The interior looks great as it is a perfect representation of the exterior designs. The functions on the front are very simple for the most part, nothing too complicated. There also isn’t much going on which makes it look a lot cleaner than other interiors. All there is inside is an infotainment system which is 8-inches and other basic tools around it to control it. With the cleaner look, it gives the overall feel a lot less stuffy as opposed to a much clustered front console. The seats are also very comfortable with a leather trim used and the letters ‘GTI’ to symbolize the Golf GTI edition to this model.

Under the hood, Volkswagen uses a 2.0-litre TSI 4-cylinder engine which is able to push 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The engine powers the car through all wheel drive rather than just the front two. With this powertrain, the 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI is able to reach 100km/h in just about less than 5 seconds. In terms of fuel efficiency, it requires about 7.8 litres for every 100 kilometres driven on the highway, and about 10.2 litres in the city.

Volkswagen has evidently created a great hatchback overall and is starting to bring back the initial popularity the hatchback used to have. With great looks in a sporty and stylish way, and a pretty powerful engine, this car will undoubtedly do well when it hits stores.

Power and Performance:

Golf engines include a turbocharged gasoline 4-cylinder in 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter displacements. The 1.8-liter engine is available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, while the GTI's 2.0-liter comes with a 6-speed manual transmission or, optionally, the 6-speed DSG automatic. The 292-horsepower 2.0-liter Golf R has all-wheel drive and new for 2016 a 6-speed manual along with an available DSG. The diesel-powered Golf is paired with a 6-speed manual or the optional DSG automatic transmission. Unleaded regular is recommended on the 1.8-liter TSI, while the 2.0-liter GTI and R require premium fuel. The e-Golf uses an electric motor and has an estimated range of 83 miles. It can recharge in about four hours on a 240-volt outlet and is compatible with DC fast-charging stations.

Interiors and Special Features:

The VW Golf or 2016 continues a tradition of having an upscale look to its interior, using high-quality materials, soft-touch surfaces and, on higher trims, piano-black accents. The cabin has generous shoulder room in both rows. Cargo volume is 16.5 cubic feet below the parcel shelf and 22.8 cubic feet to the roof. Loading is made easy thanks to a low liftover in the rear hatch. The rear seat has a 60/40-split rear-folding back, expanding the load space to 52.7 cubic feet when lowered. There's plenty of front-seat storage in the center console and door panels.

Safety features:

The entire Volkswagen Golf family—from e-Golf to Golf R—delivers bit on safety, thanks to a strong new structure with great occupant safety scores so far, plus active-safety scores that have been upgraded for 2016.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) stepped up its requirements for active-safety features this past year; but so did the Golf. When equipped with the $695 Driver Assistance Package, the 2016 Golf gets a new Front Assist system that includes autonomous emergency braking that might help you avoid an accident at a moment of inattention. That allows the Golf to earn the 'advanced' score for front crash prevention and, with top 'good' scores in every area of IIHS crash testing, that organization's Top Safety Pick+ accolade (its highest).
