Quick Look

The 2016 Toyota Yaris Hatchback brings about a set of decent improvements, including a facelift and several new features. That said, it’s still not quite good enough to match its competitors, lacking a proper performance model or a wide range of engines (there is only one). This means that it only has two truly appealing qualities – its low price and reputation for reliability.

Full Review

The 2016 Toyota Yaris Hatchback is not the greatest vehicle around, but it is one of the cheapest, starting at $15,775. The unfortunate truth is that the low price is one of the subcompact’s biggest perks, with the other one being its famed reliability. Otherwise, there’s really not much else to it – even in spite of its recent facelift and addition of new features. What’s worse is that none of its perks are exclusive since there are plenty of other vehicles that are reliable yet relatively cheap, such as the Honda Fit, Kia Rio and Ford Fiesta.

When looking at the Yaris, the first thing you are most likely to notice is its big open-mouth grille (some might call it the “mustache” grille) – it’s that vast piece of plastic at the front of the vehicle, in case it wasn’t clear… Its backside is uncompromisingly hefty as well, which definitely allows the vehicle to stand out. We are not sure if the redesign is an improvement, but we do like the idea of a vehicle that stands out, which the Yaris certainly does. The SE is arguably the most distinctive of them all, sporting aluminum-alloy wheels, fog lights and rear spoiler.

Inside, the new Toyota Yaris has features a plenty of soft-touch surfaces, which make the whole thing feel borderline luxurious (sort of). The overall dash design is also very neat, particularly when it comes to the way it integrates Toyota’s Entune touchscreen infotainment system. While the cabin is without a doubt the Yaris’ best aspect, not everything here is rainbows and sunshine. Firstly, there is no telescoping steering wheel, which can make driving this hatchback a little uncomfortable for some. Secondly, the rear seats are a little too, even for a subcompact, thoroughly lacking in legroom. That said, the cargo area is relatively spacious at 15.3 cubic feet, though it doesn’t have the Fit’s level of flexibility.

Under the hood, the 2016 Yaris has a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that can produce 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. You can choose to connect to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, both transmissions feel outdated. Most vehicles today offer either six-speed automatic or continuously variable transmissions, making the four-speed offering here feel laughable. The manual transmission doesn’t shift as smoothly as many currently available alternatives. The engine itself doesn’t the weight either, being only suitable for regular roads since it struggles on highways.

So, is the 2016 Toyota Yaris Hatchback worth the money? Since it doesn’t cost much to begin with, we would say yes. However, it is a very flawed vehicle, so keep that in mind when considering it.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Yaris from Toyota uses a simple 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that's good for 106 horsepower. Sending that power to the front wheels is either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. For around town, the engine is fine, but on the highway, it becomes the little engine that barely can, especially if you're trying to pass on a 2-lane highway. The transmissions both feel antiquated as well. The manual's shift action isn't particularly smooth, and the 4-speed automatic is outclassed by competitors offering 6-speeds or continuously variable automatic transmissions. Fuel economy is pretty good though, and the little engine requires only regular-grade gasoline.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside the 2016 Yaris, the cabin is straightforward and intuitive. It's a vast improvement on the center-instrument oddity of previous Yaris generations. The dash has horizontal, shelf-like lines and the controls are simple, cheerful, and easy to understand. It comes with lots of built-in storage spaces, in the form of trays, cupholders, bins, and the like—including a long tray at the bottom of the dash for the passenger. The instrument panel has soft-touch surfaces, metallic and chrome accent trim is used throughout.

Safety features:

Now in its fourth model year, the 2016 Toyota Yaris is not one of the better picks for safety. Its ratings are mixed, and there are no electronic safety features offered beyond now-mandated systems.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates the five-door hatchback as Good (the highest rating) in four of its five categories--moderate-overlap front crash, side crash, roof crush, and head-restraint/seats tests. But the Yaris doesn't do well in the new and tougher small-overlap frontal impact test, where it received only a 'Marginal' rating, one notch above the lowest 'Poor' rating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a four-star Overall rating, with four stars for frontal crash and rollover safety, but five stars is side crash.
