Quick Look

The 2016 Toyota Venza delivers a complete overhaul in design and interior features. It’s not a huge improvement over its predecessors, but that’s okay, because it wasn’t bad to begin with. The best part about the 2016 edition is the added sense of masculinity in its design, which allows the vehicle look more like a crossover than a wagon.

Full Review

The 2016 Toyota Venza boasts a complete redesign, featuring an all-new look and even more interior features. Is it a huge improvement over its predecessors? In many ways, this 2016 edition is very similar to them – perhaps, too similar. Basically, there just aren’t enough ground-breaking features to make it stand apart, so what you get here is a new look, but roughly the same car.

The exterior design is very masculine in nature when compared the previous iterations of the Venza, which makes it look like a true crossover SUV than ever before. Not to say that the previous Venzas were not crossovers, but due to their soft edges and overall curvaceous nature, they often looked more like wagons than anything else. With the 2016 version, you get more hard edges and pronounced lines. It’s tougher and, in our opinion, easier on the eyes.

Inside, the 2016 Venza isn’t quite as different from its predecessors as it is on the inside. Toyota has updated all the tech features to get with the times – though you won’t find anything too fancy. Climate control, satellite navigation, a rearview camera and parking sensors are all here as expected, along with a standard infotainment system, touchscreen and optional backseat screens to access the infotainment centre.

When it comes to space, there is a lot of it – in part thanks to the absence of a third seating row. This leaves enough head-, hip- and legroom for passengers of any size, putting the Venza at firmly the top of this segment. The cargo area boasts the impressive 70.1 cubic feet of space, so if you have a lot of luggage to carry, this should do it.

Safety features are exactly what you’d expect from a family vehicle of this size. It comes with front side airbags, a driver knee airbag, full-length side curtain airbags, antilock brakes as well as traction and stability control. Rearview camera and hill start assist are also standard, but the aforementioned parking sensors are only available on the Limited trim.

Under the hood, the new Toyota Venza has the same two engines as the 2015 version. The base offering is a 2.7-litre four-cylinder that can produce 182 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. The other engine is the 3.5-litre V6, which pumps out 268 horsepower and 246 pound-feet of torque. Both are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with uphill/downhill shift logic for minimize gear-hunting. In terms of fuel efficiency, there isn’t much difference between the two. So, if you want that extra bit of power, don’t feel bad and grab the V6.

So, is the 2016 Toyota Venza worth your hard-earned money? If you are okay with five roomy seats and a huge cargo area, then you should at least give it a look. Its competitors, which include the likes of the Subaru Outback and Honda Accord, are great vehicles but they have a different appeal – the Venza aspires to be a family crossover, not a sedan.
