Quick Look

The 2016 Scion FR-S is outwardly attractive and features some nice interior comforts that only work to enhance your drive. The entire vehicle is geared towards performance driving, but the cabin is nonetheless spacious and assisted by the latest telematics system. Though the engine under the hood isn’t the most powerful as a 2.0-litre flat-four engine, its more or less valued for its energy and sport handling. Altogether, this sport coupe is a worthy contender with more strengths than weaknesses.

Full Review

The 2016 Scion FR-S excels in outward style boasting some significant refreshes to the sleek sheet metal on the outside. As such, the interior cabin is moderately comfortable but more or less geared towards getting the most out of this performance-oriented vehicle. Handling this fun to drive car is a doozy and though the engine isn’t the most powerful in this segment, it does require a cozy and spacious interior for the dynamic driver, both of which is provided here. As it stands, the FR-S is clearly designed for the modern driver looking for a sweet ride.

The 2016 Scion FR-S has undergone several changes in this year’s upgrade, most notably to its outer body which now boasts modern styling and a sleek aesthetic. The sports coupe as a whole is low and curvy, taking on an old school long-hood and short deck proportions that is normal for performance-oriented vehicles. This FR-S, however, takes styles to a new level by including some serious detailing at the nose of the vehicle. Specifically, sharply angled vents in the lower fascia, smooth curves that flow into the hood and fenders and a wide grille opening adorn the front end with sophistication and simplicity. The sweeping roof and flared fenders likewise give this sports car a smooth look.

The new Scion FR-S hosts a minimalist aesthetic throughout the interior cabin, combining carbon-fibre accents and durable plastic for a sturdy and sensible feel throughout. Monochromatic upholstery lines the entirety of the vehicle on the inside, which is especially noticeable on the comfortable, roomy and supportive front seats. They boast good head and legroom up-front, but the back seats are pretty tight and are overall better for seating children or housing gear.

There aren’t many technology features in this sports coupe as its main purpose is performance oriented, however it does house some convenient infotainment capabilities. Embedded in the center stack is a seven-inch touchscreen interface that bundles a rear view camera, voice controls, drive information, audio and Bluetooth connectivity. But navigation is noticeably missing from this update, making this vehicle just a tad under par. Nonetheless, drivers will inevitably benefit from the leather wrapped steering wheel and flat rear seats.

In terms of performance, only one engine option is offered on the Scion FR-S but it’s undoubtedly fun to drive and easy to handle. Under the hood is a 2.0-litre flat-four engine that produces 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque while running on rear-wheel drive. Six-speed manual transmission is standard on this vehicle, but drivers can opt for six-speed sequential gearbox that is controlled by shift paddles, and also happens to be the more fuel-efficient option. For a lightweight sports car like this, the automatic drivetrain is rated at 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Safety features are evidently limited in the FR-S, opting only to include antilock brakes, traction and stability control and a rear view camera.

Overall, the 2016 Scion FR-S is all-around performance-oriented, sporting an energetic drivetrain that is paired with sleek outer refreshes and a decently comfortable interior. Look no further than this vehicle if you’re looking to keep up in the sport coupe segment.

Power and Performance:

Like its Subaru-badged twin, the FR-S uses a 2.0-liter flat-four engine that makes 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 foot-pounds of torque at 6,400 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, though buyers who prefer to go clutch-less can order a six-speed sequential automatic gearbox controlled by shift paddles at an extra cost. Fitted with three pedals, the FR-S sprints from zero to 60 mph in a little over six seconds.

Interiors and Special Features:

The little Scion coupe's front seats are roomy and comfortable, while also offering enough bolstering for support during spirited driving. Head and leg room are also quite good, allowing the car to accommodate drivers over six feet tall with ease. The rear seats are small, and only minimal knee and leg room is available with the front seats at their rearmost positions. With slightly shorter front-row occupants, the rear seat can work even for taller adults, but on the whole, it's best reserved for children and gear.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment includes the basics, like six airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability & traction control. A limited-slip differential improves low-grip traction and starts from a stop. For 2016, all FR-S models gain a rearview camera, which alleviates the problem of its mild blind spots when backing up.
