Quick Look

The 2016 Nissan GT-R receives major changes to its interior profile with improved comfort and technology, notably avoiding outward revision for the past couple of years. It’s looked relatively the same throughout the last few upgrades, but we’re not complaining since it still embodies the same sport stance and style. One of its biggest highlights on the inside, however, is the vast technology suite designed for the performance-oriented driver. Its infotainment system generously displays performance data and selected gears alongside grip, acceleration and elapsed times. And with a seriously powerful 550 horsepower 3.6-litre V6 under the hood, it’s hard to find real flaws in this year’s model. Altogether, the GT-R is built for the track and arranges most of its interior and exterior features towards this goal.

Full Review

Nissan adds great performance and interior design to their upgraded 2016 GT-R, securing its spot as one of the most powerful cars in the sports car arena. Although the upgrade lacks improvements to the vehicle’s outer profile, this energy was instead redirected to the cabins surprisingly comfortable interior and performance-oriented technology suite. Leather sport seats are comfortable, while drivers can keep track of their driving records on the seven-inch display in front of them. As it stands the GT-R clearly stacks up well against competitors both on the track and in the realm of interiors and technologies.

The Nissan GT-R has always been known and appreciated for its sport styling in the form of sharp angles and rounded contours, both of which make this vehicle instantly recognizable on the road. This year’s upgrade only improves outward appearance with a roofline that flows with slanted windows into the rear end, and circular tail lamps that round out the back as well. The lowered stance and dual-mode exhausts further accentuate this car as destined for the track. Coupled with enormously intimidating front-fender vents and deeply incised hood vents, the 2016 GT-R comes out with an overall aggressive look that is intimidates almost anyone on the road. Alternatively available on the Nismo model is an aerodynamic kit, which adds a ton of carbon-fibre features to the outer profile.

Though there have been many improvements to the Nissan’s interior over the years, the fundamental layout of this sports vehicle has largely been carried over. Standard leather upholstery lines the interior for a surprisingly comfortable and upscale vibe that is carried throughout the cabin. And although the sweeping roofline limits headroom for most adults, the rear seat still feels surprisingly accommodating and comfortable. However, you can choose to forego the rear seats in favour of track driving, of course. Towards the front end is a moderately loud cockpit with a tolerable amount of road noise, despite featuring active noise cancellation. This overall functional interior is altogether accented with soft-touch surfaces and contrast stitching, making the cabin stand out even further.

In the front-end of the cabin is a completely driver-centric cockpit that boasts a seven-inch touchscreen embedded into the center stack. The system effectively bundles infotainment and navigation systems with real-time traffic and 3D mapping. It also features Bose audio with Bluetooth streaming audio for your enjoyment. Most worthy of attention, however, is the performance aspect of this vehicle. The touch screen generously plays back a range of performance data including grip, acceleration and elapsed times, while also showing the currently selected gear. The vehicle as a whole is evidently geared towards the sport driver.

Under the hood of this powerful vehicle is a turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 engine that produces a mighty 550 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque. The unit is paired with standard six-speed automated manual transmission and an advanced all-wheel drive system, offering 17.7 litres per 100 kilometres city and 12.8 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Alternatively available on the higher-end Nismo model is an upgraded version of the V6 that produces 600 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque. The GT-R notably lacks substantial safety features and only houses a rear view camera, antilock brakes and stability and traction control.

As it stands, the 2016 Nissan GT-R seriously competes with other sports cars, especially in the realms of exterior appearance and engine power. If a refined outer profile with tons of performance potential is what you’re looking for, this year’s GT-R definitely fits the bill.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Nissan GT-R is powered by a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 engine that generates 550 hp and 463 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automated manual transmission routes this power to the ground through an advanced all-wheel-drive system. The GT-R Nismo gets an upgraded version of this V6 that puts out 600 hp and 481 lb-ft.

Interiors and Special Features:

Just like the exterior, the interior of the 2016 model year GT-R carries over unchanged. However, customers will get to enjoy a quieter cabin, as noise and vibration have been significantly reduced thanks to the revised drivetrain management system and the redesigned flywheel housing bearings. There’s also a new trunk carpet to help reduce noise in the cockpit.

Safety features:

Airbags and stability control are mandatory, and the GT-R also has all-wheel drive and several modes for the stability control system that increase safety during conservative street driving or allow more of a margin for full-on track action. You can disable the traction aids, but that would be foolish during street driving. You can have plenty of fun within the limits of these systems and even posted speed limits, but there's a fine line between control and chaos when you reach this car's boundaries, even for experienced performance drivers. One modern concession to the GT-R's keep-it-simple safety equipment approach is a standard rearview camera; it's essential, as those thick rear pillars can get in the way for lane changes or parking.
