Quick Look

With the Frontier being on the market since 2004, Nissan has changed it in the past, but not as much as the 2016 model. They have decided to alter a lot with this pickup.

Full Review

The new 2016 Nissan Frontier is the second generation of this model and has significant improvements done to it. Nissan has done a great job of making sure to use a lot of their resources into their pickup line ups since there is a clear increasing trend of North American pickup buyers. A huge factor they made sure to improve was their fuel efficiency. They have made sure to improve on their fuel efficiency because they see an increasing trend in eco-friendly vehicles.

The exterior of the pickup looks absolutely great! Starting off with the grille, Nissan has used a very similar grille as they do in some of their other models. With three parts to the grille, since there is a rectangular shape formed with silver bars in the centre of the grille, we can see they have isolated the Nissan logo. They have done this very sneakily and it adds a lot of value to the brand. Also, since it is a huge pickup and is boxed shaped, this isolated rectangular shape complements the overall shape of the vehicle. They have redesigned the headlights completely, which is powered by LED lighting. They have made the shape of the headlights a lot curvier than it was, which looks really nice from the front. The rear view hasn’t changed much since it still has standard-looking taillights, and the same amount of space in the open-concept cargo.

Taking a look at the interior designing, Nissan has done a really nice job of making sure the interior matches the exterior theme. As we could tell they were going for a more luxurious look from the outside, they are clearly doing the same for the interior as well. The centre of the front view looks to be pretty complicated with buttons everywhere, however they are not that bad once you get to use them. The wooden-looking finish on the dashboard is a really nice touch to the look of the interior. The interior also includes an infotainment system which is powered by all those buttons discussed earlier. In terms of space, the Frontier has more than enough when it comes to leg and headroom for most drivers and passengers out there. It really adds on to the pickup felling of making sure everyone in the vehicle is more than comfortable.

Under the hood, Nissan uses a 4.0-litre V6 engine which is able to produce 261 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. There is also another option of a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 152 horsepower. For the V6 engine, Nissan offers the option of either powering it through a 6-speed or 5-speed transmission. The four-cylinder engine is powered by either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. In terms of fuel efficiency, the first engine is able to drive 100 kilometres in the city with about 15.7 litres and 11.2 litres on the highway.

The 2016 Nissan Frontier is clearly a great pickup and Nissan has done a great job of making sure they keep up with current trends going on in the automotive market so they do not fall back on such an anticipated vehicle like this.

Power and Performance:

Under the hood, there's a choice of a 261-horsepower, 281-pound-foot 4.0-liter V-6 engine or a 152-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The V-6 is the star of this show, with pep and pulling power that's almost equal to some smaller V-8s. Improvements to engine have boosted gas mileage slightly over the years, helping to keep the V-6 competitive. The four-cylinder is okay for the commuter who occasionally needs a pickup, but it's ill-suited to heavier duty, and isn't that much cheaper or more efficient than the six.

Both 4x2 (rear-wheel drive) and 4x4 drivelines are available in the Frontier. In 4x2 guise, four-cylinder models offer a choice of five-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic; V-6 models can choose between a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. If you want a 4x4 Frontier, the V-6 engine is your only option, mated to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

The cabin lacks the charm and warmth that GM in particular has baked into its new trucks. The Frontier's cockpit is simple and clean, but it feels as old as it is. Compared to the other mid-size (and full-size) trucks, there's a less substantial feel and a lot more hard plastic.

Safety features:

With minimal standard and optional safety features--and a lack of recent crash-test data--the Frontier doesn't fare as well as it might in safety scores here at The Car Connection.

The crash data that is available isn't bad. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) doesn't have any ratings for the current truck, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives it "good" scores for the tests it has performed--save for an "acceptable" rating for head-restraint protection. There's no score for the new small-overlap crash test, though.
