Quick Look

The new 2016 Nissan 370Z may just be the automaker’s best model yet! Even though there isn’t much of a difference from the previous incarnation, Nissan has done a great job of keeping the features and details that were well-liked, and tweaked up anything it thought needed an improvement.

Full Review

Since the Nissan 370Z line is in a very competitive line of rivals, which includes the Audi TT, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis Coupe, it has to work extra hard to outshine them all. This outing is sure to attract drivers who are looking for a relatively low-priced yet powerful and handsome-looking sports car.

Nissan hasn’t made any immense alterations to the exterior, but the automaker did indeed keep a look that will be loved by many. At the front, the vehicle’s sporty nature shines through its headlights and fog lights, both of which are powered by LEDs. The indents used to design the hood, sneakily point right towards the Nissan logo, which works out to look perfectly in conjunction with the alignment of the headlights and the shape of the hood. Moving on to the rear, we can see that it has some similar traits to more upscale luxury sports cars like the Porsche 911. The shape of the rear mirrors that of the 911. The round-shaped exhaust pipes work perfectly with the round shape of the car itself.

Inside, the 2016 Nissan 370Z features surprisingly comfortable seats, while adding to the sporty experience the vehicle is striving to create. Nissan also offers the option of having leather upholstery, keyless entry, cruise control and power accessories. In addition to these features, the 2016 Nissan 370Z also offers real-time traffic, satellite radio and a navigation system. Moreover, Nissan has installed a Bose audio system, which makes listening to music a pure joy.

Under the hood, the 370Z features the standard 3.7-litre V6, which produces 350 horsepower. The 370Z is pretty impressive when it comes to power, especially for its new price. The engine can be connected to a six-speed manual transmission with rev-shifting downshifts or a seven-speed automatic, which also blips the throttle as it downshifts. The fuel efficiency with the manual transmission is at 9.3 litres per 100 kilometers on the highway and 13.3 litres per 100 kilometres in the city. The fuel efficiency isn’t bad at all for a sports car, which will ultimately save drivers a lot of money.

The 2016 Nissan 370Z has dropped a lot in price and has improved in features and design, so there really is no reason for anyone who likes sports cars to say no to this. In addition to the lower MSRP, the 2016 370Z is also surprisingly fuel-efficient, which would save you plenty of money in the long run.

Power and Performance:

All 370Z models get a 3.7-liter V-6 engine, although it is served two ways and with a choice of two respectable transmissions.

Base models make 332 horsepower, while the NISMO variant boosts the output figure to 350 hp. That 3.7-liter V-6 comes from a long line of well-known and much-beloved VQ-series engines, and while this one might not sound quite as nice as the previous 3.5-liter version, its reliability makes it desirable even in the used market.

Transmissions choices on each 370Z model include a six-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The manual transmission is fairly slick, delivering shifts with short, stiff throws. A SynchroRev system negates the need for heel-toe skills, blipping the throttle automatically on downshifts. Theautomatic transmission does the same, though with less directness.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside we see grippy fabric seats devoid of heaters and power adjustment. Heck, even the shift knob eschews leather trim.

Want to dim the mirror? Reach up and do it yourself. There’s no backup camera, fancy audio system or fiddly touchscreen. Just a useful covered cubby where the screen would be and a single-shot CD and radio head with real knobs and buttons. I can’t remember the last time I could reach down and press a button clearly marked FM and then a clearly marked preset button. Jeez, this just might catch on.

If you want more bells and whistles, the 370 Z Touring costs an additional $10,000, for which you get touchscreen navigation, rearview monitor, Bose audio and heated leather. Hmmmm.

Plunk your butt into the deeply bolstered fabric seats and you feel well and truly ensconced in this two-seat sports car. The belt line is high, the roof line low, the hood stretches way out ahead and the rear view . . . well, it’s awful. The stubby shifter is right where your hand falls, and while the leather-wrapped wheel doesn’t telescope, the binnacle tilts with it, ensuring the gauges are always visible.

Atop the dash a trio of gauges display time, oil temperature and battery voltage. Huh? You’ll want to keep your eye on that one.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment on the 370Z Coupe and Roadster covers all of the modern basics, with anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, front and side airbags, and, on coupe and NISMO models, side-curtain airbags. Also, its sporty dynamics and direct steering should allow drivers to make some evasive maneuvers in a pinch.

Forward visibility in the 370Z is generally good, but the thick rear roof supports in Coupe models (and the soft top on Roadsters) obstruct rear three-quarters views. A rearview camera is included on all but base models.
