Quick Look

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a look that is appreciated by most drivers, as it is very unique. It has that army-look with luxury written all over it. Even though there aren’t that many changes done to this year’s model, the G-Class is better than ever with some minor adjustments made.

Full Review

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is seen pretty rarely on the road, and that’s only because of one reason, because of the incredibly high price. Even though the G-class is worth every penny Mercedes-Benz is asking, it is still very expensive for most car buyers. The combination of a beautifully designed exterior and interior, amazing safety features, and great overall performance is what makes the G-Class have that prestige.

The exterior of the SUV has a very unique look to it as it resembles an army car, and that’s for a specific reason, because when this was first designed, it served for that purpose. Similar to some of the Jeep’s models, the G-Class is built and designed like an army car. The overall shape of it is like a box, and has very little curves. The grille is protected by durable bars in case of a collision. It is designed with horizontal metal bars inside of it, and accompanying the grille is the Mercedes-Benz logo placed in the centre. The headlights are off to the sides of the grille and are powered by LED lighting. There is also a strip of lighting underneath the main light, which is also powered by LED lighting. This strip of light gives the SUV an attractive look at night. The headlights are also protected by the metal bars in front of the grille. The fog lights are located under the headlights and are also powered by LED lighting. The rear view of the SUV hasn’t changed much. The cargo door is still horizontal-opening and is accompanied by the spare tire on the door.

The interior looks great, especially since it is a great complement to the exterior designing. The centre console is very well-organized as all the functions and buttons on it are placed in a clearly visible position for drivers. For the most part, the layout of the centre console is similar to most other Mercedes-Benz models. The centre console is accompanied by the infotainment system and display screen. The display screen is a visual representation of the audio, climate control, navigation system, vehicle alerts, and Bluetooth. Also, since there is another screen near the speedometer, drivers don’t even have to look at an angle to see all these features, they are all right there in front of them. The material used for the dashboard and seats are very good quality, as it looks and feels very comforting. Another convenient feature offered to drivers is an analog located near the armrest which controls majority of the features in the SUV. In terms of space, Mercedes-Benz offers more than enough leg and headroom for both drivers and passengers.

Under the hood, Mercedes-Benz offers a couple of engines. The first being a twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 engine which is able to produce 536 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. This engine is powered by a 7-speed automatic transmission and runs on an all-wheel drive system. The next engine is a 6.0-litre V12 engine which is able to produce 603 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. In terms of fuel efficiency, the first engine is able to drive 100 kilometres in the city with about 19.6 litres and about 16.8 litres on the highway.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Glass is a great option to go for, if the price of it isn’t too much for some drivers. Other than the ridiculously high price, the fuel efficiency is nowhere near attractive which may want certain drivers to avoid this. However for those who have the money and aren’t too worried about higher fuel consumption costs, they will absolutely love this SUV and appreciate every single detail.

Power and Performance:

The three G-Class models are defined by their powertrains. The new turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 base engine in the G550 offers a little more pep than the outgoing engine, launching the G550 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds versus 6.1 seconds for the old naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8. This engine delivers smooth power with a hint of turbo lag at low rpms and a throaty burble appropriate of a V-8.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class stands out in any crowd, unless that crowd has its own air cover and a tank escort. It started life as a military vehicle from the 1970s, like the old Humvee lineup, and has hardly altered its flat sides, nearly vertical windshield, and strikingly boxy greenhouse in all that time. Today the G-Class still stands angular and perfectly taut, just like some of its Beverly Hills test pilots, only without the telltale creases and scars of repeated touch-ups.

Updates for 2016 include a new bumper with additional air intakes and wider wheel flares. The G63 AMG wears a black mesh grille and its own bumpers, with optional red brake calipers, 20-inch five-spoke wheels, and subtle AMG badging on its flanks and down its standard stainless-steel running boards. The G65 has 21-inch wheels and chrome mesh in the grille and bumpers.

Safety features:

Every G comes with radar cruise control and blind-spot monitors. A rearview camera and parking sensors are standard, and they are quite useful because visibility is constrained at the rear, where a wide frame surrounding the rear window blocks out most of the view. Visibility is great, otherwise. The G-Class is designed for hardcore off-roading, and its flat front end and sides leave almost no doubt where the corners of the vehicle are, and parking is easier than in almost any other big SUV as a result, though the wide turning radius can require an extra maneuver at times.
