Quick Look

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, though lacking in outward revision, clearly boasts a feature-rich profile on all frontiers. Appearance, performance and safety is clearly valued above all else in this midsize luxury fastback, and these aspects are translated into tons of features that only work to enhance the vehicle as a whole. One of its biggest highlights is the safety suite, which includes an array of active and passive provisions that keep you engaged, assisted and alert while your driving this dangerously fast vehicle. These features are necessary, as there’s a seriously powerful 4.7-litre twin turbocharged V8 engine under the hood of the CLS550 that produces 402 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Overall, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is a stellar vehicle that definitely competes with segment rivals like the Porsche Panamera S and Audi A7.

Full Review

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class boasts interior refinement and safety equipment as the biggest highlights across all models, with significant upgrades made in both areas. Although this years model lacks improvements to the vehicles exterior finish, this energy was instead redirected to lining the cabin with the most premium materials like leather and wood trim, and updating the touchscreen display to feature more modern components. There are also ample safety technologies, both active and passive, that are specifically designed to protect all occupants in your fast-moving vehicle. Under the hood of these models are also powerful engines that boast great acceleration and handling. As it stands, the CLS-Class is a worthy competitor with more strengths than weaknesses.

This four-door coupe highlights an all-around distinctive outer body that is sure to turn heads with minor modifications made primarily to the front end. The fascia is noticeably restyled with a larger, more ominous big-star grille and optional full LED headlamps. But for the most part, the new CLS-Class keeps its signature roofline and shapely cabin, coupled with a flowing, uninterrupted form that extends rearward. It’s a more muscular fastback profile, featuring more sharply sculpted bodylines that harbour in the coupe territory with a longer hood and shorter overhangs. Deservingly given the title of “four-door coupe,” this Mercedes is incredibly attractive and takes on many aesthetic aspects of typically seen in the smaller vehicle.

On the inside, however, is a surprisingly sporty design that results in less headroom and legroom, but overall contributes to the upscale vibe of this cabin. The interior is also distinctively lavish, exhibiting a great attention to detail in the realms of dash design, seat and door panel stitching, and the unique wood trim colours and textures that encompass occupants with style and grace. Standard leather seats are also heavily bolstered and designed for both sport driving and long-distance cruising.

Technology is also a big highlight in this comfortable cabin, as the center stack is designed specifically with the driver in mind and features tons of components that are sure to keep you engaged. Though the CLS400 only comes with an eight-inch audio display screen with minimal functionality, the CLS550 is outfitted with a navigation system and 14-speaker Harman-Kordon sound system for your enjoyment. There’s also multi-coloured ambient lighting that effectively sets the mood for your driving environment, depending on your preference. Optional features in the CLS-Class include heated and ventilated front seats, an electric trunk closer and a rear view camera.

Drivetrain varies by model, but across the lineup are powerful and incredibly dynamic engines that bring enjoyment and engagement to this midsize luxury fastback. Under the hood of the CLS400 is a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine that produces 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The unit is paired with standard seven-speed automatic transmission and runs on rear-wheel drive, offering 14.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres highway. The CLS400 notably provides more power than entry-level models of the Audi A7 and BMW Gran Touring. Conversely, the CLS550 features a 4.7-litre twin turbocharged V8 engine that produces 402 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Paired with rear-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission that comes new this year, this unit is likewise rated at 16.6 litres per 100 kilometres city and 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres highway. On this drivetrain, power delivery is smooth and constant and is matched with quick and seamless shifts. Across CLS models are powerful engines that make this vehicle very pleasant to drive.

Mercedes-Benz is especially known for its safety features and thus equips the CLS-Class with numerous provisions that are designed to assist and protect all occupants in this four-door coupe. Standard across models is the Attention Assist drowsiness monitor, which triggers an audible warning and display message when the system notices erratic steering. Optionally available are numerous driver-assist technologies such as Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Distronic PLUS cruise control, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parktronic With Advanced Parking Assist, and Night View Assist PLUS with Pedestrian Detection.

As it stands, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is destined to please luxury car drivers seeking the best of both worlds within the four-door coupe fastback. With a smoothly refined outer body and a meticulously detailed interior cabin, along with some amazing powertrain options – it’s hard to find a better performance-oriented luxury vehicle than this.
