Quick Look

The 2016 FIAT 500L may be exactly what FIAT needs to gain more market share in North America. Even though FIAT has not made many changes to this new model, the changes they have made look great on the car and definitely make this year’s model a pretty solid upgrade from the previous year.

Full Review

Since FIAT’s designs isn’t doing too well in North America, as it is more of a European style, they have realized they need to capture the attention of drivers in other ways, which they have finally done with the 2016 FIAT 500L. They have made some minor changes, but it is evident that these changes make the vehicle go a long way.

The exterior really sends the message that FIAT is going for a friendlier and sportier look. This is evident with something as simple as their headlights. With them in a more circular shape, they are not going for an aggressive look. In addition to the circular headlights, they have also designed their fog lights in a similar shape. FIAT hasn’t really made the grille look all that special either. It is thin and rectangular shaped. The rear view shows us FIAT decided to go with the rectangular shaped taillights. The rear view sends off the same vibes as the front in terms of the friendliness character it seems to have.

The interior look seems to have a completely different look than the exterior. It doesn’t seem to complement the look from the outside, which may be a problem for some. However, it looks very stylish and spacious. The interior includes an averaged size LCD screen for the purpose of infotainment and camera displays. The overall designs somewhat match the exterior shape, but that’s as close as it gets when comparing the two. This means the seats are designed in a more round build, which is very similar to how the car is built.

Under the hood FIAT uses a 1.4-litre turbo four which produces 111 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. The restriction FIAT is putting on this trim is that the transmission is only a six-speed manual one. It can be very abrupt while changing gears and takes far too long to downshift in anything. In terms of fuel efficiency, it requires about 7.6 litres to drive 100 kilometres in the city and about 5.9 litres to drive 100 kilometres on the highway. Drivers will be saving a lot of money with such efficient engines.

This new model FIAT is launching is definitely causing some disruption in the market for compact sedans. With mediocre looks both outside and inside, and a fuel efficient engine, the new 2016 FIAT 500L may after all be worth its value.

Power and Performance:

Every 2016 Fiat 500L is front-wheel drive and powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. For all but the Lounge model, a six-speed manual transmission is standard. A six-speed automated-manual transmission is optional on the Pop trim, while the other 500L trims are eligible for a traditional six-speed automatic that's standard on the 500L Lounge.

Interiors and Special Features:

Large doors, an essentially level roof line and high-mounted front seats make it easy to slide right into the 2016 Fiat 500L. The front seats are wide and comfortable, but they are also stiff and not especially supportive in spirited driving. What's more, they lack any sort of power adjustment other than the available power lumbar.

Once you're seated, you'll be struck by the expansive field of vision that comes from the wagon's large glass area. This imparts a unique sense of minivan-like openness, as the 500L driver enjoys practically unimpeded views in any direction, although the dual A-pillars on each side take some getting used to.

Safety features:

All 2016 Fiat 500L models come standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, hill-hold assist, front-seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver-side knee airbag and active head restraints for front seat occupants. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are also available. The optional Uconnect Access feature that comes with the 6.5-inch touchscreen includes remote vehicle access (via a smartphone app), emergency assistance and stolen vehicle location.
