Quick Look

The 2016 FIAT 500 Hatchback may be exactly what FIAT needs to gain more market share in North America. Even though FIAT has not made many changes to this new model, the changes they have made look great on the car and definitely make this year’s model a pretty solid upgrade from the previous year.

Full Review

Since FIAT’s designs don’t look like they are doing too well in North America, as it is more of a European style, they have realized they need to capture the attention of drivers in other ways, which they have finally done with the 2016 FIAT 500 Hatchback. They have made some minor changes, but it is evident that these changes make the vehicle go a long way.

The exterior really sends the message that FIAT is going for a friendlier and sportier look. This is evident with something as simple as their headlights. With them in a more circular shape, they are not going for an aggressive look. In addition to the circular headlights, they have also designed their fog lights in a similar shape. FIAT hasn’t really made the grille look all that special either. It is thin and rectangular shaped. Moving to the rear view of the vehicle, we see FIAT decided to go with the rectangular shaped taillights. The rear view sends off the same vibes as the front in terms of the friendliness character it seems to have. If this car could be described in any way, it would be a character from a children’s movie. It seems childish and friendly.

The interior look seems to have a completely different look than the exterior. It doesn’t seem to complement the look from the outside, which may be a problem for some. However, it looks very stylish and spacious. The interior includes an averaged size LCD screen for the purpose of infotainment and camera displays. The overall designs somewhat match the exterior shape, but that’s as close as it gets when comparing the two. This means the seats are designed in a more round build, which is very similar to how the car is built.

Under the hood FIAT uses a 1.4-litre turbo four which produces 111 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. The restriction FIAT is putting on this trim is that the transmission is only a six-speed manual one. It can be very abrupt while changing gears and takes far too long to downshift in anything. In terms of fuel efficiency, it requires about 7.6 litres to drive 100 kilometres in the city and about 5.9 litres to drive 100 kilometres on the highway. Drivers will be saving a lot of money with such efficient engines.

This new model FIAT is launching is definitely causing some disruption in the market for compact sedans. With mediocre looks both outside and inside, and a fuel efficient engine, the new 2016 FIAT 500 Hatchback may after all be worth its value.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Fiat 500 lineup can appear bewildering, encompassing two body styles, four powertrains (three gasoline, one electric), and numerous trim levels, options, and accessories. But unless you're in California, the 500e electric model is off-limits. And the Abarth is a clear and distinct choice for those who want to be looked at every time they blip the throttle.

For buyers who are a tad more sedate than that, there are two engine options and two transmissions. Entry Fiat 500 models get a 101-horsepower 1.4-liter engine that's not quite as peppy or perky as you might expect in something with the 500's design. To get the most out of the base Fiat 500, you have to drive it like a European: Run it up to redline in each and every gear. There's a lively rasp as it rushes over 3000 rpm, and it doesn't get too harsh as it rises higher through the rev range.

Interiors and Special Features:

There's just something about the 2016 Fiat 500 that makes people smile, and it's been that way since it first appeared on North American roads in the spring of 2011. It's charming, disarming, and unique--and after the successful reintroduction of the Fiat brand, it couldn't have come from any other make.

Its designers have wrapped pert, upright styling and character-filled lines around a very small three-door hatchback, and used relatively inexpensive materials inside that manage to look far more stylish and upscale than they actually are.

Safety features:

The 2016 Fiat 500 gets tolerable but hardly top-tier safety scores, and its now 10-year-old basic design is reflected in some aspects of the ratings.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), on the other hand, gave the 500 three-door its top score of 'good' in most tests, but it received a worrisome 'poor' rating--the very lowest--in the tough new small-overlap frontal crash test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has rated it four stars overall, as well as four stars for frontal crash and rollover resistance, although it earned five stars for side impact.
