Quick Look

The 2016 Audi A5 may not measure up in terms of performance, especially compared to other luxury heavyweights such as the BMW 4 Series, Cadillac ATS Coupe, Lexus RC and Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe. But where it lacks in performance, the A5 courageously makes up for in style and space. With flowing, sleek lines and a comfortable, roomy front-seat cabin, both driver and passenger can rest assured they are travelling in grandeur, and at their own relaxation. Audi’s industry-leading navigational and infotainment system will enable you to travel with sophistication and ease, further amplifying your in-car experience.

Full Review

The 2016 Audi A5 combines sporty elegance with immense comfort to ensure your ultimate relaxation and indulgence when driving this vehicle. Not only are the A5’s exterior lines smoothly refined and quintessentially classic, but these high-end intricacies are echoed throughout the vehicle’s core as well. The vehicle’s front-seat cabin boasts a stylishly spacious interior and ensures maximum comfort for both driver and passengers alike. Although the Audi continually lags behind its German competitors in brand recognition, its industry-leading Multi-Media Interface infotainment system sets this series apart simply due to its extensive options and technical features. With these elements, your luxury car experience is sure to be heightened with the sporty charm of Audi.

On the outside, the A5 impressively combines a classic take on the sports car with modern refinements, sure to capture massive attention on the road. This handsome luxury two-door is both elegant and striking, closely matched by the vehicle’s upscale interior. Its refinement, however, may feel overstated at the vehicle’s nose, which hosts a deep, open-jawed grille that seems too large and oblong. In addition to this alteration, there are slimmer headlights and a minimized grille frame. Despite these changes, the Audi A5 manages to retain its class and allow its style to flow through the interior of this high-end coupe.

The Audi A5 boasts simplicity and grace throughout its leather interior, and offers a cabin that is both stylish and spacious. Its elegance is achieved through the use and refinement of higher-end materials, offering two-tone leather and suede seats, as well as a choice of stainless steel, wood or carbon trim. The vehicle’s interior flaunts both extravagance and comfort, allowing you to indulge in relaxation. The real highlight of the A5, however, is found in its excellent audio and mapping systems, which come standard on all models. The system impressively bundles an excellent rearview camera, HD Radio and DVD, as well as Google Earth maps with Street View (when paired with Audi Connect) – resulting in one of the most beautiful high-resolution systems available. Likewise, Audi’s industry-leading Multi-Media Interface, standard on the A5 range, features a rotary controller and centre-mounted display that seamlessly combines audio, infotainment and navigation into one of the highest-calibre interior vehicle systems. Optional extras for the 2016 Audi A5 are extensive and include, but are not limited to, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, blind-spot monitoring, panoramic sunroof functionality and a fantastic Bang & Olufsen audio system. Clearly, Audi spared no expense in giving us the most in technical gadgetry.

The 2016 Audi A5 tends to favour comfort over performance across base models where ride and handling are valued the most. Base models start with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, resting at 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Though all A5’s now come with standard Quattro all-wheel drive, transmission choice depends on your chosen body style. Within the A5 Coupe, buyers can choose a six-speed manual transmission, which offers great fuel economy of 11.8 litres per 100 kilometers city and 8.8 litres per 100 kilometers highway, or alternatively an eight-speed automatic rated at 12.8 litres per 100 kilometers city and 9.1 litres per 100 kilometers highway. Conversely, the A5 Cabriolet model, only available with Quattro all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission, offers a fuel economy of 13.5 litres per 100 kilometers city and 9.7 litres per 100 kilometers highway. Evidently, the base Audi A5 is one of the more fuel-efficient models in its class.

Overall, the 2016 Audi A5 is stylish and comfortable across both coupe and convertible models, successfully combining classic sporty cues with modern technology. If you’re looking for a ride with class and ample space combined with a variety of add-ons and options, there are few better cars than this one.

Power and Performance:

With the A5, a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is standard. The 220-horsepower four-cylinder provides a peppy, fun-to-drive nature, though it doesn't quite rise to the realm of high-performance. Thanks to its 258 pound-feet of torque, however, in-gear and low-speed acceleration feels strong. All A5s now come with standard quattro all-wheel drive. Transmission choice depends on the body style you select. Coupe models offer a choice of an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. The A5's turbo four-cylinder varies slightly in fuel economy with the choice of transmission and body style. The A5 coupe with quattro all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. Opting for the A5 Coupe with quattro all-wheel drive and the eight-speed automatic brings the ratings to 22 mpg city 31 mpg highway, or 25 mpg combined. The A5 Cabriolet, only available with quattro all-wheel drive and the eight-speed, returns ratings of 21/29/24 mpg.

Safety features:

Every A5/S5/RS5 comes standard with dual front and side airbags, traction and stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Cabriolet models miss out on the otherwise-standard side curtain airbags due to its topless construction, but the convertibles do gain larger side airbags and pop-up rollbars that deploy when sensors determine a rollover is imminent. For those with a taste for higher-tech safety enhancements, Audi offers a lane-departure warning system, blind spot monitors, and radar-based cruise control as well as adaptive headlamps. Throughout the A5 range, visibility is very good, though the Cabriolet's soft top can limit rearward visibility somewhat. An available rearview camera and reverse parking sensors helps improve low-speed maneuvering safety.
