Quick Look

The 2016 Acura RLX is definitely one of the more underrated luxury sedans. The subtleness of it makes it that much better when it does get that infrequent buzz. Honda has done a fine job of keeping a car like this seemingly unadvertised, but very high in performance.

Full Review

The 2016 Acura RLX is a great addition to the current luxury-sedan lineup. We understand that a car like this may not appeal to every driver out there because of certain traits or features it offers, but to those who this model does cater to will absolutely love it. With great looks on the outside and on the inside, a powerful yet fuel-efficient engine and a very spacious interior, the RLX may just be a perfect fit for many drivers out there.

Acura has made some minor adjustments to the exterior design – both at the front and back. Similarly to its RDX cousin, this model has a point right at the front, which looks almost like a beak. The point endows the sedan with a triangular shape, which fits the overall theme of the brand since the Acura logo is also a triangle. The grille is an upside-down pentagon, which is commonly used among the Acura models. The thin strip of LED headlights adds a sense of luxury to the car, while boasting the same arrow-like shape as the grille and the logo. The rear side of the car hasn’t changed much either, offering only a handful of changes, including a set of wider tail lights, which may seem a bit off-putting to some people. Generally speaking, if you dig the look of the Honda Accord, then you will love the RLX.

The interior of this model is very spacious and comfortable. The centre console boasts a ton of functions, but the controls around it don’t seem to be too complicated. With a very easy-to-use touch-display and an optional navigation system on top, the 2016 Acura RLX can be considered very user-friendly. In addition to the overall comfort of the vehicle, the front seats are trimmed in rich leather. The rear seats, however, aren’t the best area for tall adults due to limited headroom, but there is definitely ample legroom (you can call it compromise of sorts).

Under the hood, the RLX uses a 3.5-litre V6 engine, which can produce 310 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque, with its six-speed shiftable automatic being the standard choice of transmission. We weren’t kidding when we said that the RLX is powerful – Acura recognized that its previous models were lacking power when compared to the competitors and decided to use this knowledge to its advantage. In terms of fuel efficiency, the RLX will require about 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres n the city, 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway and 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined.

The 016 Acura RLX is a great luxury sedan overall. Even though it could use a few improvements here and there, the RLX manages to impress in almost every category. With this model being only a second addition to the lineup, it’s safe to say that Acura has definitely set the bar very high and we are not expecting it to drop lower any time soon.

Power and Performance:

Even among the milder versions of the other sedans in its class, the front-drive Acura RLX's 310-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 isn't a spec-page leader, nor is its 272 pound-feet of torque. It's up 10 hp and 1 lb-ft over the RL's 3.7-liter V-6. There's not much urgency in the way the RLX pulls uniformly away from a stop, or in its relaxed uptake. It's a contrast to the Lexus GS, which has some peaks whipped into its performance, though it doesn't necessarily feel any quicker than the RLX--both sit squarely in the 6-second 0–60 mph range.

The front-drive RLX's automatic transmission nets shift paddles and a sport shift mode, but it's still a six-speed like the RL used. Upshifts are very smooth, while downshifts can be less invisible. The top-rated sedans in the segment are changing over to eight-speed automatics, as is the Chrysler 300. The ZF eight-speed that's nearly universal sets a high bar, and the RLX could use more tightly spaced gears to accelerate more quickly off the line.

Interiors and Special Features:

The RLX, on the other hand, is less apt to catch your eye in traffic. There's nothing wrong with the stance or the proportions; the BMW-esque turn to the roofline even has enough distance between it and the original to avoid a copycat look. The rest is subtle but graceful, from the LED headlights to the curve stamped over the front wheels, on back to the LED taillights. The smooth lines are definitely attractive--but no element is groundbreaking. It's a car that blends into the background, which is the idea of luxury for some, we imagine.

The cabin is a functional, nicely detailed place to check off driving tasks, but it's more of the same. It falls in the gap between the opposing ways drivers tend to define luxury: it doesn't wrap itself in the precise modern design cues that define most Audi cockpits, nor does it have the pervasive opulence that fills every Jaguar cabin. That said, the choice of materials, grains, and finishes is point-perfect in the RLX. It has the refinement down pat but lacks the sense of drama that's become a basic requirement in cars of its ilk.

Safety features:

All RLX sedans come with the usual airbags and stability control. A driver-side knee airbag is standard as well, as are a rearview camera and Bluetooth, two features we consider almost essential in combating driver inattention. The RLX's rearview camera actually displays a 180-degree view of its surroundings, for even better visibility. It helps too that the RLX doesn't have the very thick roof pillars or very small rear glass of, say, the Lincoln MKS.

Among the options offered to RLX buyers are blind-spot monitors, a feature we like for the added information it gives drivers who fail to check their rearview mirrors. There's also adaptive cruise control and a lane-departure and lane-keeping system; together with a collision-avoidance system, the chorus of sensors and alerts can actually prevent lower-speed accidents--and even can grant a degree of autonomous driving. When the adaptive cruise control is set, the RLX will stop itself at lower speeds--and all the driver has to do to re-engage is to hit "resume" on the steering wheel, or tap the gas.
