Quick Look

The 2016 Acura MDX has a couple of minor changes done to it from its previous model. However, don’t be fooled by the small amount of changes because they may just be enough for it to be our next vehicle.

Full Review

Acura has brought the MDX model back for 2016, keeping its relatively affordable price compared, which has always been a factor that played in MDX’s favour. However, the low price does not mean that this midsize luxury crossover is cheap in quality. It’s completely worth its price, if not more. This crossover is able to reach out to so many drivers out there, with its exterior design, interior looks and powerful engine.

The 2016 MDX’s body is relatively the same as that of the previous year’s model. Acura’s signature triangular-shaped grille features a smiling bar with the Acura logo on it, giving the luxury crossover some character. With the added rails for specific trims on the roof of the vehicle, which just increases their customer base. The headlights have a sleek arrow-like shape, which allows them to point at the ends of the grille and give the car a luxurious and rich look. Acura has also added a spoiler to the top of the rear end to make the vehicle feel a little sportier. Finally, the taillights have almost the same arrow-like shape as the headlights, neatly bookending the whole package.

The interior look is a perfect complement to the exterior. With two screens in the centre and few buttons to work with, the functions may seem a bit complicated than they actually are. The lack of buttons makes it a lot easier to work with, except for the one button that is used to start the car. Yes, the ignition starter involves a push-to-start button. The leather upholstery used throughout the cabin endows the place with a very classy look. When it comes to space, the front two seats have nothing but that, though as we move farther down the crossover, there is a lot less of it, and unfortunately, the third row can only fit kids. However, space would not be an issue at all if you were to drop down the third row, and there would be even more if the second was dropped as well.

Under the hood, the Acura MDX uses a 3.5-litre V6 engine, which can pump out 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The engine is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission, which is this year’s new addition. In terms of fuel efficiency, the vehicle has gone in the wrong direction, being rated at 12 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. These stats are for the front-wheel-drive option.

All in all, the 2016 Acura MDX is a great luxury crossover. It has the looks, the power and the fuel efficiency to impress most of its prospective buyers. There really isn’t much to complain about here, which ultimately makes this crossover a great choice for a large number of drivers.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Acura MDX employs a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive (SH-AWD) available as an option.

According to Acura, MDX fuel economy starts at 22 mpg combined (19 city/27 highway) with front-wheel drive. Adding the Advance package with its auto stop-start feature to the front-wheel-drive MDX bumps the rating up to 23 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway). As for the AWD models, they return 21 mpg combined (18/26) in standard form and 22 mpg combined (19/26) with the Advance package.

Properly equipped, the MDX can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Interiors and Special Features:

The MDX's cabin is pleasing to the eye, highlighted by classy leather upholstery and a sporty, thick-rimmed steering wheel with shift paddles. Materials quality is satisfactory, if not quite class-leading, and the dashboard houses a memorable center stack with dual infotainment screens. The push-button gear selector is another distinctive feature; some may miss the discontinued traditional shift lever, but the new selector has a cool, contemporary vibe. You can find some Honda-grade plastics and switchgear if you poke around long enough, but by and large, the MDX puts on a convincingly upscale show.

The optional navigation system is fairly intuitive, as Acura allows you to look up destinations by using the central control dial, the lower of the two screens (a 7-inch touchscreen) or an enhanced voice recognition system. Unfortunately, neither screen boasts the super-crisp graphics we've come to expect in this class, and some of the more basic car functions require multiple distracting pushes of virtual touchscreen buttons.

The MDX's front seats are nicely shaped, though compared with competitors in this segment, their adjustability is limited. The second-row seats slide fore and aft for added flexibility, providing generous legroom in their rearmost position. The third row is best suited for kids, but adults should find it tolerable back there for short trips; just make sure they're good-natured and limber.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment for the 2016 Acura MDX includes antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, a driver knee airbag, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. A rearview camera is also standard, and AWD models come with a stabilizing function for trailer towing. Optional or standard, depending on the trim level, are blind-spot monitoring (with rear cross-traffic alert), a frontal collision warning system, automatic braking for frontal crash mitigation, a lane-departure warning system, lane keeping assist and Road Departure Mitigation. The latter essentially combines the functions of the camera-based lane-keeping system and the automatic braking system to help you avoid drifting off the road into roadside objects.
