Quick Look

The new 2016 Acura ILX is back and it looks great! With the recent updates made, this new model may eventually surpass all of its competitors, including the Audi A3, BMW 2-Series and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.

Full Review

Acura has done a great job with the 2016 ILX in a lot of different aspects, which is definitely going to be attracting many new drivers. With its exterior design, interior look and fuel-efficient yet powerful engine, this new entry-luxury compact has a lot of potential. And thanks to the changes made to the engine, the drive on this sporty sedan is going to be a lot more pleasant and smooth.

Acura has done a great job with the exterior design of the vehicle. The almost-invisible grille with the arrow-shaped Acura logo looks perfect. Next to the grille, we can see the thin and sleek LED headlights, which add on to the sporty and luxurious look Acura seems to be going for. On the hood, we can see three indents all made to draw attention to the grille and ultimately the Acura logo since they are basically pointing right at it. At the back of the car is a very small spoiler, which is formed from the overbite of the top cargo door. Moreover, Acura used thin LED taillights as they did with their headlights, which carry over to the side of the sedan.

Acura has done a great job of complementing the exterior look with superb interior design. Two words that would describe the interior would be “spacious” and “comfortable.” What more could a driver or a passenger really ask for with a car like this? The rear seats have more than enough space for passengers – so much so that they would even be able to fit very tall adults. When it comes to controls, Acura made sure of making it easy to comprehend so drivers wouldn’t be distracted from driving if they need to get something done.

Under the hood, Acura has made some changes too. The brand has discontinued the hybrid engines and now uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that produces 201 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, being paired with an eight-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The sedan also comes standard with front-wheel drive, which may not appeal to everyone. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 2016 ILX is good for 9 litres per 100 kilometers in the city and about 7 litres per 100 kilometers on the highway, which is pretty good for the power this sedan has.

The new 2016 Acura ILX is overall a great sedan when it comes to most aspects of buying a car, with the most important one being fuel efficiency. However, even though Acura has not made major alterations to this model, the changes made aren’t bad, and it’s still an upgrade from the previous year’s model.

Power and Performance:

Reviewers write that the ILX, which comes with a new four-cylinder engine for 2016, accelerates slowly to highway speeds, though they note that it has adequate acceleration from a stop. Critics say the ILX's eight-speed automated manual transmission, which is also new for 2016, changes gears with precision. The 2016 ILX earns an EPA-estimated 25/36 mpg city/highway, which is very good for an upscale small car. Test drivers note that the ILX has composed handling, with strong grip in turns. Most report the ILX has a comfortable ride and that the cabin remains quiet at speed. They add that the ILX has strong brakes and that overall, the 2016 ILX has better driving dynamics than the 2015 model.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, you’ll find improved interior materials and some changes at the center of the dash, where connectivity features have been given an upgrade, with the introduction of Acura’s dual-screen infotainment systems to the ILX. It's a pleasant place to travel, looking like a typical Acura: edgy curves, contoured surfaces, and easy-to-read gauges.

We tend to think that it’s the dash styling that lets the 2016 ILX down a bit in its new role as a more focused sporty sedan. The ILX might be better served if there were more color or originality in textures and materials, and the dash manages to feel rather basic in the area just ahead of the passenger, with a spare look to the plastics and vents.

Safety features:

The 2016 Acura ILX doesn’t just have all the expected safety features for a small premium sedan. It now also piles on the active-safety features and driving aids.

Last year’s model achieved top Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ratings in all tests where it was run, but it wasn’t tested in the tough small overlap frontal category. And in federal New Car Assessment (NCAP) testing, the ILX was last year given a top five-star Overall rating, with four- and five-star ratings for frontal and side crash protection, respectively. Versus last year’s model, engineers improved body rigidity while bolstering the body structure in some areas that are critical to the new small overlap frontal impact test; so while previous results won’t carry over to the new model, it’s likely they’ve improved.

New to the ILX for 2016 is the so-called AcuraWatch suite of active-safety features. Altogether, it brings Forward Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and a Blind Spot Information System, plus cross-traffic monitoring and a multi-view rear camera system.
