Full Review

The 2015 Volvo XC60 is one of the Swedish automaker’s three midsize vehicles, which launched back in 2010. This crossover SUV isn’t the biggest one around, but it’s a solid vehicle in every other aspect, delivering plenty of cabin space, lots of features and solid performance. Another category where it didn’t have to excel, yet totally does, is fuel economy. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder can save you 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, which is impressive. In other words, the XC60 is an all-around solid package.

Unlike its blocky predecessors, the new Volvo XC60 boasts a delightfully elegant profile that’s almost impossible to ignore. Despite the vehicle’s apparent beauty, the exterior also manages to be highly functional. It comes with low-sitting roof rails that successfully reduce wind noise and optional crossbar system that you can attach for carrying bikes, kayaks, skis and whatever else you may need. If you get an R-Design model, you will be treated to neat 20-inch wheels that improve pavement performance, but at the expense of off-road capabilities. So, if you need this car for occasional trip to the wilderness, then stick with the base model.

Inside, the XC60 is modest but slick, which is what you would expect from a Swedish vehicle. It also has a new dash layout, which can now include a TFT adaptable digital instrument cluster that lets the driver choose different settings and colors. Nice touch. The car also comes with Volvo’s super user-friendly ventilation control scheme that looks like a person sitting down. If you want to direct air to your head and shoulders, just press the “head” button. If you want to cool your legs, then press the “legs,” and air will relocate to the foot-wells. We can only hope that other automakers will copy this trick from Volvo because it’s absolutely fantastic. The seats and door panels are all covered in contrasting colours, and the bucket-style front seats are as comfortable as they look. The rear seats could be a little more spacious since their legroom is a bit tight, but they are still suitable for adults. Our real pickle the awkward placement of the manual lumbar controls, which makes them tough to operate.

Under the hood, the 2015 XC60 can have one out of five possible engine configurations. Front-wheel-drive models come with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a supercharged version of the engine that produces 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Both of them are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive versions come with a 3.2-litre inline-six that produces 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. You can also go for the more powerful turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder that cranks out 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The R-Design model gets the same engine, but it can produce 325 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. All of the all-wheel-drive XC60s come with a six-speed automatic transmission and run on regular unleaded gasoline.

Overall, the 2015 Volvo XC60 is a fantastic crossover SUV that gets almost everything right. It has a few quirks on the inside, but they can be easily overlooked. If you don’t mind paying up to $40,000 or more for a five-seat crossover, then we definitely recommend checking this one out.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Volvo XC60 offers no fewer than four different engines; half are quite old, the other half are brand-new. Volvo's mid-size crossover utility handles well in all versions, though there's a clear difference in acceleration feel among the engines. And, crucially, the newest engines are offered only with front-wheel drive--it's a packaging problem, according to Volvo--so all-wheel-drive XC60s will stick with their legacy engines until an entirely new design comes along in two or three years.

Front-wheel-drive XC60 models can be ordered with two different variations on Volvo's new, light, and highly efficient Drive-E 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, an entirely new design created in-house and planned to spawn a family of three-, four-, and six-cylinder variants in due course. The base XC60 comes with a 240-horsepower Drive-E four that's direct-injected and turbocharged, while the more powerful optional Drive-E puts out 302 hp, courtesy of both a supercharger (to boost power at low revs) and a turbocharger (to do the same at higher engine speeds).

Interiors and Special Features:

As befitting a Swedish automobile, the XC60's interior is sleek and understated. A new dash layout includes an available TFT adaptable digital instrument cluster that allows the driver to select different settings and colors. Still onboard is Volvo's clever ventilation control in the shape of a person sitting down. To direct air to your upper body, just hit the figure's "head"; touch the legs, and air moves to the foot-wells. Contrasting colors adorn seats and door panels, and the bucket-style front seats are very comfortable. On the downside, the manual lumbar controls are awkwardly placed and hard to operate.

Safety features:

Every 2015 Volvo XC60 comes standard with traction and stability control, antilock brakes, whiplash-protection front seats, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard is Volvo's City Safety system, which is an automatic braking system that engages at speeds of up to 30 mph when the car detects that a collision is imminent.

There is additional, optional safety equipment. The Dual Two-Stage Integrated Booster Seats pop up from the backseat's outboard positions and accommodate children with a height/weight range from 37 inches and 33 pounds to 55 inches and 80 pounds. These booster seats come with power child door locks. The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) package adds a blind-spot warning system, cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. The Technology package adds a frontal collision warning system with fully automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection with fully automatic braking, a driver-inattention warning system and lane-departure warning.
