Quick Look

The Jetta Sedan is Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle in North America. Although some may dislike this sedan’s unexciting design, its affordability, solid performance and decent cabin more than make up for any perceived shortcomings.

Full Review

The Jetta Sedan has been the best-selling car for Volkswagen for some time now, helping to establish the company as one of the global leaders in sales. The Jetta Sedan has a long history, with the first model appearing in 1979 under a different name and becoming known as the “Jetta” in 1984. The current Jetta is in its sixth generation, which has been around since 2011. New for 2015 are several tweaks for the front and rear ends, improved material quality in the cabin, new electronic safety features and new options that vary by trim. The Jetta Sedan is available in four main trim levels: Treadline, Treadline+, Comfortline and Highline. While there has been some criticism regarding for its lacklustre design, the Jetta continues to be one of the most popular vehicles in North America with a proven reputation of excellence.

The 2015 Jetta Sedan has several welcome front and rear end tweaks that make this car a bit more exciting. When the new generation was released for 2011, Volkswagen heard some backlash for building an unexciting, even boring, sedan compared to the rest on the market. While the Jetta may not be turning many heads down the street, it still has a simple and attractive look. The 2015 tweaks include a taller three-bar grille that flows down into the front bumper and holds newly-shaped fog lights. In the back, the trunk gets a reshaped lid with an integrated rear spoiler. Standard features on the base Jetta include15-inch wheels, power heated exterior mirrors and keyless entry. Moving up in trims or adding stand-alone options will upgrade the exterior features with possibilities such as a sunroof, fog lights, larger wheels, chrome details and more. While the Jetta Sedan isn’t the most exciting-looking vehicle, there is definitely an opportunity for this car to have a bit more style.

The interior of the Jetta Sedan is conservative at best, when compared to some of the more tech-savvy or highly-stylized cabins of its competitors. For Volkswagen, this is a good thing. The understated design is simple and clean, and it prevents any clutter or confusion when it comes to its control gauges or centre stack. Some may classify this as boring, but for the Jetta Sedan, it is simply functional. In some trims, 2015 has brought some updated styling for 2015 that includes better materials. The dash is uncluttered and the control gauges are easy to use and conveniently located. The most impressive part of the cabin, for most, will likely be the spaciousness. This back seat is the largest in the class, making it a comfortable place even for adults. The Jetta’s trunk space is also class-leading at 15.7 cubic feet.

The technology features on the Jetta Sedan aren’t immediately impressive. In order to get to the good stuff, buyers have to move up in trims or add on stand-alone features. The most popular addition is the Technology Package that includes a rearview camera, push-button start and a five-inch touchscreen with satellite radio. There is also the option to upgrade to features such as a navigation system, better central display and Volkswagen’s Car-Net app suite. The technology features are far from the most sophisticated out there, but they do offer several functions that are easy to use.

There are three available engine options on the Volkswagen Jetta that are dependent on trim level or buyer’s options. The first is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that generates 115 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a six-speed automatic is optional. Moving up in trims will buy you a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The TDI features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that generates 150 horsepower and 236 pound feet of torque.

Overall, the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan has received the tweaks it needed to stay current and relevant to its buyers. Despite seeming overwhelmingly simplistic in its design, the Jetta’s goal is to provide space and reliability above all else.

Interiors and Special Features:

With the recent trend toward edgy shapes in technology-focused interiors, the 2015 Jetta's overall interior design looks conservative in comparison, although many might find a certain sort of peace in the lack of glaring screens or a multitude of questionably useful buttons. The Jetta's simple, functional gauges and dash could be judged either as homage to the days when German designs focused on the task of driving and little else -- or as just plain behind the times. For those who believe simplicity is best, the view from the Jetta's driver seat will be a delight.

A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go.
