Quick Look

The 2015 Subaru WRX ditches the “Impreza” moniker and takes on a sports-car identity of its own. Since its price is roughly in the mid-$20,000 range, it’s near-perfect alternative to muscle cars like the Camaro and Mustang, thanks to its superb 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can deliver 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. It can also be a wonderful family car due to the amount of rear seating space that it provides.

Full Review

The 2015 Subaru WRX doesn’t hide the fact that it’s a sports car, but what’s important is that it’s also a practical all-wheel-drive sedan. It’s essentially the less outgoing alternative to muscle cars like the Camaro and Mustang, which are both priced in the mid-$20,000 range. If you are looking for style and glamour over practicality, then this isn’t an option for you. However, if you need a hauler for a small family, but you also occasionally enjoy speeding on highways, then this might just be what you need.

In terms of exterior design, the new Subaru WRX reflects the model’s separation from its sibling, the Impreza. For those of you who don’t know, the WRX used to be known as the Impreza WRX, which was basically the sportier version of the regular Impreza. As such, the fourth-generation WRX and STI only share a few pieces of glass with the new Impreza, while the rest of the body is wholly unique. We especially liked the flared front and rear fenders, neat front-end design and thinner A-pillars, which improve outward visibility.

Inside, the Subaru WRX has grown to be far more refined than you may remember. Let’s just say the word “sophistication” wasn’t the first thing to pop into your mind when looking at the older models. The new version features soft-touch materials on the upper dash and door panels, a full-colour driver information screen, leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel and eight-way power driver's seat. All this makes the WRX just only slightly less impressive than the Volkswagen Golf R when you look at the overall quality of the cabin. When it comes to functionality, the outboard back seats offer plenty of space for the majority of adults, while the trunk will provide almost twice the amount of space as the Lancer Evo sedan.

Under the hood, the 2015 WRX boasts two different configuration of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The 2.0-litre version produces 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The STI variant comes with the 2.5-litre version of the engine, generating 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. However, no matter which engine you choose, you will get a six-speed manual transmission and symmetrical all-wheel drive.  The WRX also allows you to pick the optional sport-calibrated continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), in case you hate manual gearboxes. The CVT is actually quite capable this time around, so if you really want an automatic transmission, then don’t dismiss this one. Also, keep in mind that both engines need premium fuel in order to operate.

Overall, the 2015 Subaru WRX is a very good sports sedan. Sure, Subaru is not the most popular brand on the market, but you will be doing yourself a great disservice if you don’t at least check it out first.

Power and Performance:

The centerpiece of the WRX isn't the standard all-wheel drive that comes with every one (and every Impreza), or the new choices in transmissions. It's the turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0-liter four that swaps in for a less talented, normally aspirated Impreza four.

The turbo four is a tart performer, waking up every joint in the WRX's suspension, using every gear cog (or virtual gear) to magnify the natural handling advantages it has over front-drive compacts with taller powertrain installations. The four's horizontally-opposed cylinders lie flatter, giving it more weight closer to the ground--and all the while, those pistons are turning gas into 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, peaking on a wide plateau from 2,000 to 5,200 rpm thanks to different cams and valve springs versus the non-turbo four.

Interiors and Special Features:

While "sophistication" and "WRX" were mutually exclusive terms, the latest WRX actually has a refinement story to tell. With soft-touch materials for the upper dash and door panels, a full-color driver information display, leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, and available 8-way power driver's seat, the WRX is now just a few shades behind the markedly more expensive Volkswagen Golf R when it comes to overall interior quality. As for functionality, the outboard rear seats provide more than enough room for most adults, and the trunk offers nearly twice as much space as the Lancer Evo.

Safety features:

Every Subaru WRX comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver-side knee airbag and active front head restraints.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Subaru WRX earned a highest possible rating of "Good" in the small-overlap and moderate-overlap frontal offset impact tests. It also earned a "Good" rating for its performance in the side impact, roof-strength and whiplash protection (seat and head restraint design) tests.
