Quick Look

The 2015 Scion tC is a solid little coupe that offers decent performance, pretty design and many practical features. Its only glaring flaw is a lack of space and comfort in the cabin. It’s not too uncomfortable, but it’s clear that Scion has invested its efforts into other aspects of the car.

Full Review

The 2015 Scion tC is no longer the “special” one in the Scion lineup, having relinquished that spot for the sexy FR-S coupe. However, it’s still not a bad vehicle as it offers decent performance, cute design and plenty of features. Its cabin could use a bit of work in the comfort department, but otherwise, this little coupe is a solid offering.

In terms of exterior design, the 2015 tC follows in the footsteps of the new FR-S, gaining a few new aggressive features last year, which add up to a much more aggressive stance. In other words, the tC is a lot more in-your-face than it used to be.

Just like its exterior, the tC's cabin has an obvious sporty feel. You’ll find a thick, flat-bottom steering wheel, supporting seat bolsters and controls that are catered toward the driver. The interior definitely gives the feeling that this is a high-performance vehicle. That being said, cheap plastic trim and thinly-padded armrests take away some of the edge from the cabin. Comfort-wise, the rear seats offer quite a bit of legroom, while getting in and out of the back is relatively easy too. Behind those seats, you get a trunk that can hold 14.7 cubic feet worth of stuff, and if you fold the rear seats, you’ll get even more. Since this is a hatchback, its body makes loading larger items easier than it is with traditional coupes, like the Civic or Hyundai Elantra. That being said, the cabin does lack headroom and overall space both in front and back, which means that longer trips will start causing you body aches, making this vehicle more appropriate for shorter trips or city drives.

In terms of technology, the tC is packed with useful and user-friendly features, with all the knobs and dials being clear and easy to use. The optional BeSpoke audio system offers a solid navigation system and smartphone integration that connects Internet radio, Yelp and other social media apps.

Under the hood, the front-wheel-drive version of the 2015 tC comes with a 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine that can produce 179 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed manual transmission as a standard, but a six-speed automatic with a rev-matched downshift is also available.

Overall, the 2015 Scion tC is well worth your money, if you’re ever in need of a relatively low-priced coupe. There are some issues here and there, but there are plenty of aspects that make up for them, which means that it’s not a bad deal at all. Give it a look!

Power and Performance:

The Scion tC has grown in terms of performance in recent years, but it's still not quite as much fun to drive as most of its competitors. With contenders like the Ford Mustang, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mazda Miata, and even the Scion FR-S available for similar coin, it's easier to see the tC as a comfortable, sporty, everyday car with more chops than you might expect.

The electric power steering feels good, as do the big all-disc brakes, and ride quality's obviously a priority, as the big 18-inch wheels and tires don't make things too harsh. For 2014, Scion claimed to have increased body rigidity and made “modifications to stabilizer bar hardware.” It's also retuned the suspension and added additional welds for improved dynamics. Look for an update here on how those updates work.

Interiors and Special Features:

Much like its exterior, the 2015 Scion tC's cabin has a definitively sporty feel. With its thick, flat-bottom steering wheel, cradling seat bolsters and controls canted toward the driver, the tC strives for a high-performance sports car aesthetic. Unfortunately, the cabin's ambience is sullied a bit by the abundance of cheap plastic trim and thinly padded armrests.

From the standpoint of practicality, the tC is one of your better choices. The rear seats have above-average legroom, and getting in and out of the back is pretty easy by coupe standards. Behind the rear seats the tC can hold up to 14.7 cubic feet of luggage, while folding the rear seat yields additional cargo space. The hatchback body style also means it's easier to load bulky items in the tC than it is with traditional coupes like the Civic or Hyundai Elantra.
