Full Review

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is one of the most powerful cars on the market, and it should be since this vehicle is worthy of a “supercar” status. It doesn’t just deliver superb design, astonishing horsepower and special features like its gullwing doors, but it also works as a callback to Mercedes’ past. Offered either as a coupe or convertible, the SLS easily matches the likes of the Aston Martin DB9, Ferrari California and Bentley Continental GT.

Outside, the 2015 SLS features an impressive carbon-fiber hood, splitter, back spoiler and mirror caps. Regardless of whether you settle on the coupe or convertible version, you will get deeply carved sides and a long hood – which needs to be that way to accommodate the large V8 engine. The most appealing aspect (or controversial, depending on your preferences) is the presence of the upward-opening gullwing doors in the coupe. It still takes quite a bit of an effort to open and close these things – since you need to first bend down to open them and then stretch high to close them. The convertible, however, has normal doors, which makes sense if consider physics, while also featuring a triple-layer fabric roof that retracts rather quickly.

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz SLS features a two-passenger cabin that doesn’t differ much from any other luxury vehicle. Overall, it’s a well-put-together space that offers a logical layout, but in comparison to the exterior it’s not nearly as inspiring. Nevertheless, we love this cabin since it’s truly a place of luxury. You get Designo diamond-pattern leather, shiny metal surfaces and carbon-fiber trim and Mercedes badges. There’s also a seven-inch display on top of the centre dash that shows off your navigation, audio info and other features – all of which are controlled via Mercedes’ COMAND system with a centre knob just behind the wedge-shaped gear lever.

Under the hood, the Mercedes-Benz SLS lets you play with only one possible engine - the 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8. No, it’s not turbocharged, but it does produce 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain relies on a dry-sump system for lubrication, which lets it to sit lower for a better centre of gravity and consequently better handling. Every single SLS model is rear-wheel drive (sorry), with the V8 being connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The coupe and convertible can reach the top speed of about 317 km/h.

So, is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG worth the exuberant price tag of over $200,000? It certainly is not, if you can’t afford it. However, if your pockets and love for cars are deep, then the SLS AMG is totally worth a look.

Power and Performance:

The 6.2-liter V8 powering the Final Edition has been leaving skid marks on streets and seats since it was first developed by AMG back in 2006. But that was the tame version of this monster mill. Marketed as a 6.3-liter to commemorate the 1963 M100 engine it was inspired by, its 6.208 liters presented buyers with 518 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque in its first applications. For the SLS, however, this wasn’t quite enough, so they fitted it with a dry-sump, new intake and a hardier top end to throttle 583 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque from the naturally aspirated beast. Sadly, it’ll be all turbo from here forward.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 SLS AMG GT Final Edition's 2-passenger cockpit feels like any other modern Mercedes-Benz. That is, it's well-crafted with a logical layout, though it's not quite as inspiring as the car's exterior. Still, there is much to like, and this supercar also knows how to coddle. The interior is awash in Designo diamond-pattern leather, gleaming metal and commemorative carbon-fiber trim and badges. A 7-inch display mounted in the center dash conveys navigation, audio info and more, and is controlled by Mercedes' COMAND system with a center knob mounted just aft the wedge-shaped gear selector.

Safety features:

The SLS AMG GT hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it is built with a super-rigid structure for performance, and is put through the same engineering analyses and internal requirements of every other Mercedes-Benz vehicle--and has its own host of standard safety equipment as well.
