Quick Look

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec is targeted at large families that need a lot of passenger space, but don’t wish to compromise on luxury. The GL350 is the base model in the lineup, but it is nonetheless a great option as far as luxury full-size SUVs go.

Full Review

The GL-Class is the largest of SUVs in the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup, and with three rows of passenger seating, this vehicle is more like an upscale bus. This class has been a part of the Mercedes-Benz lineup since the 2007 model year. It has since undergone one major revision and is now in the second generation. The GL350 Bluetec is the base model out of the four models offered in the GL-lineup, but shouldn’t be looked at like a base vehicle because it’s not. The GL350 comes equipped with great features, a very capable engine and the same cabin space that’s to be found in any of the other trims (which is a lot). The vehicle’s primarily target is, of course, a large American family, but it will really fit the needs of any buyer who requires a lot of space and maybe some luxury on the side.

The exterior design of the GL550 is defined by its rugged and boxy look. Although it follows many of the standard proportions of a full-size SUV, there is no mistaking what lineup this vehicle belongs to. The ruggedness in this vehicle is defined by the aggressive stance and angular cuts. The boxy shape of the vehicle has been toned down a bit in the newer generation, but it still maintains the same overall look. Other details that have been updated include LED lighting at the front and back and a bolder grille. Some standard features on this base model include 19-inch wheels, roof rails, a power sunroof, a power liftgate and rear privacy glass. As far as value goes, the GL350 is a great option for getting tons of features for the minimal price. There are also optional features that make this vehicle more capable including a trailer hitch.

The interior of the GL350 is a very luxurious and spacious place to be, built with the finest materials and dedication to quality. Even with the general focus being on space, there were no details that went uncared for. But what really sets this SUV apart from the competition is its full-size third row that can fit just about anyone, not just small children or contortionists. This row is also fully storable since with just the press of a button it can be folded down into the car to increase its cargo capacity. The interior is a comfortable place overall, with the seats offering comfort and support that will accommodate any trip duration. Some standard interior features on the GL350 include a rearview camera, wood trim, dual-zone automatic climate control and premium vinyl upholstery.

The technology features in this family vehicle are sure to please any passengers. At the forefront of these is the COMAND infotainment system. This system controls all of the information and entertainment features in one place displayed on a seven-inch central display. Other standard features include Bluetooth audio and phone functions, as well as a sound system that features HD radio and an auxiliary input. There is a Premium 1 package that can be added to the GL550 that provides specs such as voice command functionality, a navigation system, digital music storage and satellite radio.

Under the hood of the GL350 Bluetec is the most fuel-efficient engine in the lineup. The Bluetec is powered by a diesel-fueled 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine that puts out 240 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Like the rest of the GL-Class, this engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GL350 uses 10.7 litres of gas per every 100 kilometres with the city and highway figures combined.

Overall, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec is a full-size SUV that will carry your passengers around with luxury, style and efficiency. This vehicle is one of the best options in this entire segment thanks to the value and reputation that is has built over the past eight years.

Power and Performance:

The GL-CLass offers four different powertrain options, ranging from the fuel-sipping BlueTEC diesel model to the tire-eating AMG version. All come with four-wheel drive standard. For 2015, Mercedes has replaced one of the already downsized turbo V-8 options with a twin-turbo V-6.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the GL reconfigures the look of the prior version into a neater order, while packaging in some new features. The GL has a matte-finish glow here too that avoids the blingy excesses. Wood trim and leather upholstery warm up the cabin, and a range of optional upgraded trims change out eucalyptus or burl walnut for more exotic touches like olive ash wood and perforated designo leather. There's a standard seven-inch screen on the dash for infotainment, and the knob controller on its console runs those features through the COMAND operating system.

Safety features:

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the GL-Class. They didn't test it in the last generation either, due to its low sales volumes and high price. The GL is closely related to the M-Class, which the IIHS rates as a Top Safety Pick+. And Mercedes has a stellar safety reputation in general, with a tendency to overengineer its models when it comes to safety design.
