Quick Look

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 is definitely not the cheapest sedan on the market. However, those who are willing to pay between $70,000 and $100,000 for a new car will be able to enjoy many nice perks that the CLS-Class has to offer, including sexy exterior design, roomy cabin, brisk performance and plenty of high-tech features. Under the hood, the CLS400 comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine that produces 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque – and it’s the weakest engine in the lineup.

Full Review

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 is big, luxurious and fast, which is why it’s so easy to fall in love with this sedan. Like many vehicles from the German automaker, it belongs to a “class” – which in this case is the CLS-Class. These particular vehicles are quite expensive, with some of the variants costing above $100,000. This one costs around $70,000. So, if you are looking for lower-end luxury, then this isn’t it. If you have the cash, however, then you should definitely check it out since even its lower-trim models, like the CLS400, offer a solid engine, slick exterior design, comfortable cabin and many neat features.

Mercedes last updated the CLS-Class’ exterior design for the 2012 model year, which was a while ago. As a result, the 2015 model boasts a fresh look that doesn’t stray too far from the formula but manages to appear “new” nevertheless. It’s still a coupe-styled sedan, but the front end is now sharper and the lines are cleaner. The CLS also retains the long, arching curve that defines its distinct profile, with short front and rear overhangs complementing the slick, coupe-like side view.

Inside, the CLS400 feels even “newer” with several additional features and gadgets that weren’t there before. The most prominent addition the new eight-inch colour screen in place of the old one. The previous infotainment system was small and impractical, so it’s nice to see Mercedes learn from its mistakes. The new display allows you to easily browse through its functions, while watching the road, which rivals what you can get in other luxury cars currently on the market.

In terms of design, the cabin is sporty and stylish, offering a three-spoke steering wheel and revamped centre console. The latter comes with four buttons as opposed to two, which actually simplifies certain functions. You can choose from a host of colours, bespoke materials and other configurations. And like the rest of the Mercedes vehicles, this lineup benefits from AMG-built configuration options and packages.

Under the hood, the 2015 CLS400 has the weakest engine in the lineup, though it’s not necessarily a bad thing, since it’s still quite a beast. What you get here is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 that produces 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the other non-4MATIC models, the engine in this car is connected to a 7G-Tronic Plus, seven-speed automatic transmission as opposed to the new 9G-Tronic, nine-speed automatic.

Overall, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 is a heck of a vehicle. It’s also an excellent entry point into the lineup for those with thinner wallets. That said, if your wallet is really thin, then this car is not for you.

Interiors and Special Features:

Things get a lot better inside, where you can find a number of new features and gadgets. The most important add-on is the eight-inch color display that comes to replace the old unit. Mercedes got a lot of heat for the small infotainment system fitted in the second-gen CLS and it seems the Germans are finally living up to their potential. The new screen brings the dashboard to current luxury standards and enables users to easily browse through its functions even when having to keep an eye on the road.

The cabin’s sporty and elegant feel has been enhanced further by means of redesigned, three-spoke steering wheel and a revised center console. The unit has four buttons instead of two, making navigating through options a less complicated task.

Safety features:

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class hasn’t been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but the brand’s reputation for solid construction and high-tech safety equipment should put buyers at ease.

With 10 standard airbags, Attention Assist monitoring driver alertness, active head restraints, Pre-Safe emergency brake assist, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, and more on the standard safety equipment list, the 2015 CLS-Class is at the front of the pack in safety gear.
