Quick Look

The 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE is the ultimate enthusiast sports coupe, paying tribute to Jaguar’s past days and staying current at the same time. As expected, it looks slick, provides fantastic performance and offers a plethora of tech features. With all this good stuff on offer, Jaguar makes it clear that the F-TYPE is here to replace the soon-to-be-retired XK.

Full Review

The 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE tries to be a callback to Jaguar’s classic sports cars, borrowing their rear-drive, two-seat layout along with athletic looks. That being said, it does manage to steer clear from the cliché retro homages. This means that the car looks and feels modern, with just a few little details that we would call “retro.” However, the F-TYPE’s main goal is to replace the now-retiring XK, which is currently in its last year.

On the outside, the 2015 F-TYPE comes with a new and modern shape that's relatively unique to the brand. The F-TYPE coupe has a sloping roof and narrow back glass, which give it a wider look from behind, but the dimensions are the same as in the convertible. Both cars come with spoilers that pop up from the rear deck when speeds go beyond about 80 km/h. However, the coupe's rear deck is narrower and taller, which reduces rear visibility. It’s the only real issue we can think of as far as design is concerned.

On the inside, the 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE features a wide console that separates the passenger and driver, while providing a left-hand grip for the passenger (for high-speed maneuvers). Though the roof is sloping, it’s still relatively high, which translates into good headroom, even for tall drivers. Legroom is nothing to sneeze at either, though it’s not overly amazing. There’s also large, sharp TFT display between the two gauges, which comes with orange paddle shifters, a start button and Dynamic Mode selector on some models. Since this is a top-of-the-line vehicle, the Jaguar also has an infotainment touchscreen, which offers a simple yet effective interface. The overall design of the cabin is superb as well, with stitched leather throughout, as well as a headliner – but that can only be found in coupes.

Under the hood, the 2015 F-TYPE has a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 engines, which vary in power output quiet significantly. You can get 340 horsepower in the base V6 and 550 in the F-Type R Coupe's V8. Both engines rely on aluminum-alloy construction as well as a twin-vortex supercharger and water-cooled intercooler. They also use aluminum cylinder heads that contain the independent variable-cam-timing system. The V6 also has a counter-rotating front and rear balancer weights to endow the engine with the same kind of refinement as the V8. All the engines are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and they are all rear-wheel-drive only.

Overall, the 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE is as fine an automobile as you can find. It’s definitely not for everyone, given its lack of space and its affinity to high speeds, but it will fully satisfy anyone looking for this sort of experience.

Power and Performance:

Each of the F-Type's three engines has forced induction. There's a supercharged V-8, as well as a pair of new supercharged V-6s--set apart by twin inboard exhausts, while the V-8 has quad exhausts, mounted outboard.

You don't have to be an apologist to be happy with either of the supercharged V-6s. The six-cylinders are 3.0-liter units; one is tuned to 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, and it's shared with other Jaguar products, including the XJ and XF sedans. In 380-hp tune, it's a distinct version held aside strictly for the F-Type S roadster and coupe. The 0-60 mph estimates for these models range from 5.1 seconds and 4.8 seconds, and top speeds are limited to 161 mph and 171 mph.

Interiors and Special Features:

The driver-focused cockpit of the 2015 Jaguar F-Type separates the passenger and driver with a wide console, and provides a left-hand grip for the passenger. The coupe's high roof means good headroom even for tall drivers, and there's adequate legroom, too. Drivers get a large, visually sharper TFT display between the two gauges, with orange paddle shifters, a start button, and Dynamic Mode selector on some models. The infotainment touch screen's simple interface conveys what you want to know, albeit without much flair. The beautifully assembled interior boasts stitched leather throughout, including the headliner in coupes.

Safety features:

The Jaguar F-Type offers up a body structure designed for speed and safety. It's bonded and riveted from aluminum panels, an aerospace technology that helps it shave overall curb weight.

It also comes standard with the usual airbags and stability control, and in the case of the roadster, rollover protection behind the seats.

However, neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have performed any crash tests on the Jaguar F-Type, which is typical for cars of its price and volume class.

On the options list, the F-Type offers up a rearview camera with a large in-cabin display; blind-spot monitors; reverse and front parking sensors; and active torque vectoring delivered via the anti-lock braking system, on some models.

We'll update this section if and when crash-test data becomes available.
