Quick Look

The 2015 Ford Mustang serves up a complete redesign for its 50th anniversary, which means that car enthusiasts should expect an uber-powerful engine, more aggressive looks and much, much more. The only issue with this muscle car is that its EcoBoot four-cylinder engine is an absolute weakling – especially when compared to its 700-horsepower V8 sibling.

Full Review

The 2015 Ford Mustang marks the 50th anniversary for the model, which Ford has decided to celebrate by endowing it with a complete redesign. You get a completely new engine, jet turbine and all-around more aggressive look. In other words, this American classic is nothing but a miracle for those who like muscle car – a gift in a basket, so-to-speak. The only problem with this year’s iteration is the absolutely despicable EcoBoot engine – but more on that later.

On the outside, the 2015 Mustang is more distinctive and aggressive than ever. Admittedly, its side windows do remind us those on the Aston Martin, but there is still plenty of classic Mustang styling cues on this vehicle. This one gets a large trapezoidal grille, angled-back headlights, fastback roofline and three-bar taillights. On the other hand, the wheelbase and overall length are almost the same as in the older version, but it does sit 1.5 inches lower, while being around 1.5 inches wider and possessing a three-inch-wider rear track.

On the inside, the new Ford Mustang pays an appropriate homage to its past, thanks to a dual-cowl-style dashboard that still manages to offer all the modern conveniences. Depending on the trim level, you can have adaptive cruise control as well as heated and ventilated front seats. On top of everything, you also get better-quality materials, which is always welcome. Driver space is also a marked improvement since drivers any size should be able to feel right at home behind the wheel of this Mustang. Speaking of that wheel, it now features a telescoping function in addition to tilt adjustment, so you can go nuts with this one. However, if you’re a back passenger, then you will feel cramped, especially if you are on the larger side. The trunk offers 13.5 cubic feet of cargo, however, which is not bad for a sport coupe – though the convertible reduces the amount to 11.4 cubic feet.

Ford has also added Sync's voice activation feature to simplify audio operation, phone and navigation systems. The MyFord Touch interface is more controversial, however, since the learning curve required here is a bit high. The touchscreen is overstuffed and downright distracting. The Dodge Challenger has a much more convenient system, if you want an example of something better.

Under the hood, the Mustang has a 3.7-litre V6 engine, which can produce 300 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, which is the standard powertrain. The EcoBoost gets a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine, which can generate 305 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. If you go for the GT version, you will obtain a 5.0-litre V8 engine, which yields 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. All the engines can be combined either with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The latter also features paddle shifters.

If you’re a car enthusiast or just someone looking for a fun-to-drive vehicle, the 2015 Ford Mustang is it. It’s nothing short of spectacular, which is not all that surprising – since this sporty coupe has an amazing track record. Definitely take it out for a drive – it’s worth it!

Power and Performance:

A 3.7-liter V6 engine with an estimated 300 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque is standard on the base Mustang. The EcoBoost has a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. Ford estimates that it will produce around 305 hp and 300 lb-ft. The GT boasts a 5.0-liter V8 good for at least 420 hp and 390 lb-ft. Note that all engine outputs are preliminary estimates by Ford. We will provide more concrete numbers once they become available. Any engine can be paired to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic (with paddle shifters).

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 Ford Mustang's cabin is cozy and comfortable for a performance car. Soft-touch surfaces lend a more premium feel, offsetting the impression of swaths of flat surfaces and plastic panels. Recaro racing-style seats are available, but even the standard front seats are nicely supportive. The two rear seats look appealing with their deep sculpting, but legroom and headroom are very tight for normal-size adults. Think of the back seats as handy stowage space. Controls are logically arrayed and easy to use. In the Premium and GT500 models, the Electronics Package adds an 8-inch color touch screen and navigation system.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for all 2015 Ford Mustangs include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, a rearview camera, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags (coupe only) and a driver's knee airbag. Also standard are Ford's MyKey system (which allows owners to limit speed and audio volume levels for young drivers) and, for manual-transmission models, hill-start assist.

Optional on the "Premium" trim levels and standard on the 50 Years Limited Edition are blind spot and cross traffic warning systems.
