Quick Look

The 2015 Ford Edge delivers superb exterior design, comfortable cabin and more features than ever before. Since the SUV is entering its third generation, it also boasts a series of neat updates, one of which is the addition of the twin-turbocharged 2.7-litre V6 engine that can generate 300 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque when connected to a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Sadly, the fuel economy is still abysmal.

Full Review

The 2015 Ford Edge may very well be one of the automaker’s least SUV-like SUVs on sale – all thanks to its curvaceous nature and lack of any real off-roading capabilities. Having made its debut in 2006, the Edge exists specifically for people who are in search of a spacious and comfortable cabin – one that isn’t necessarily attached to a bulky off-roader. For 2015, Ford has revamped and re-powered this five-seater to make sure it enters its third generation in style, which should be a blessing for anyone who felt the last few models were a bit underwhelming, even if the changes here are not that significant.

When it comes to exterior design, the 2015 Edge keeps all the smart cues its designers drew up when it was still in its concept form last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The six-sided grille that made its appearance in the previous model copies the one on the Hyundai Santa Fe, while the C-pillar is lifted straight from Lexus’ RX models. You will also notice a shoulder line that makes the SUV seem a bit like a BMW vehicle. With all these new elements put together, the Edge’s body manages to achieve a more premium look without ruining what made the previous models so appealing. That said, the overall changes are minimal here since most of the major ones are under the hood.

Inside, the Ford Edge sports better interior finishes, while the shape of its dash is very reminiscent of its Korean competitors, particularly when you look at the the vent shapes and brightwork around the dash and central touchscreen. The vehicle also manages to be more functional place, with knobs and buttons making coming back to the centre console. And thanks to a stronger, longer body, the overall cabin experience is much more pleasant. It sits on the Fusion's 112.2-inch wheelbase and sports the overall length of 188.1 – which makes it 3.9 inches longer than the previous models. In spite of this increase, there’s still no third-row seat, but the cargo area has increased to 39.2 cubic feet with the rear seat up. If you fold the rear seat, you’ll be able to get 73.4 cubic feet. There are also more small-storage spaces now with a covered bin that conceals the USB ports and power point, storage on the left side of the steering wheel and large door pockets.

Under the hood of the 2015 Edge, you will find a wide assortment of engines. The base models get a turbocharged EcoBoost 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder that produces 245 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. New this year is a 2.7-litre turbocharged 2.7-litre V6 that can put out 300 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. The Edge Sport and new Titanium model are getting a 3.5-litre V6 that cranks out 265 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. All the engines are connected to a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission that now also has sport steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The fuel economy is still subpar unfortunately, with the 3.5-litre-V6 front-wheel-drive model being rated at14.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. The all-wheel-drive model is faring even worse.

Overall, the 2015 Ford Edge is a decent SUV that should please its niche consumer base. That said, it does cost almost as much as a three-row SUV, while offering only two rows, which is a bit of a downer. It does make up for that with a more luxurious cabin, however, so if that’s where your priorities lie, then you should give this vehicle a look.

Power and Performance:

Ford has composed the new Edge's lineup from its extensive array of four- and six-cylinders, both new and familiar. Base Edge crossovers get a new 2.0-liter four with a new twin-scroll turbocharger--it's a heavily revised version of its predecessor, with the twin-scroll turbo providing boost earlier in the rev range. With it, the Edge improves upon the thin low-end torque of its previous turbo four, which could not be rated for towing, nor equipped with the extra weight of all-wheel drive. The new one is offered with an all-wheel-drive option, and with a towing package rated at 3,500 pounds. Ford estimates its output at 245 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.

Of the two six-cylinders to come, the more intriguing one is the twin-turbocharged, direct-injected 2.7-liter V-6 that will be standard in the Edge Sport. It's a new design already promised for the 2015 Ford F-150 pickup, where it's been pegged at 320 horsepower. In the Edge, Ford says it will put out more than 300 horsepower, and will sport active noise cancellation. For those who don't want turbocharging--or direct injection--Ford will offer its normally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6, making 265 horsepower.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the Edge wears better interior finishes, and the dash shape itself has a close kinship with the Korean sport-utes, especially in the vent shapes and brightwork that bracket the dash and frame the central touchscreen. It promises to be a more functional place, too: the former capacitive-touch bars for volume and fan speed have been axed, with knobs and buttons making a welcome return to the center console.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment in the 2015 Edge lineup again should include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, and front and rear head airbags, as well as new-for-2015 inflatable rear seatbelts and a glovebox-mounted front passenger knee airbag. The standard post-collision safety system carries over from 2014, as does Ford’s teen-oriented programmable MyKey speed and audio limiting feature and Sync-interfaced emergency assistance communications and alerts.
