The 2015 Dodge Journey adds a few updates this model year, but it’s awaiting a complete redesign for the 2016 model. This mid-size crossover has made huge improvements over the years to clean up its original bad reputation, and while it’s not perfect, the Journey is definitely shining a little brighter.

Full Review

The 2015 Dodge Journey is the bridge between the old Journey and the anticipated new Journey, expected to launch in 2016. The Dodge Journey was first introduced in 2008 for the 2009 model year. The original vehicle had a lot of negative response, but has worked over the years on improving its reputation. The 2015 model is based off the 2013 refresh with some minor tweaks to update the style; however, the real overhaul is expected for the 2016 model. The Journey is a mid-size crossover that is capable of carrying up to seven passengers with the right configuration and offers ample features for an affordable price.

The Dodge Journey adopts a more European look for the 2015 model, including tweaks to the grille and front fascia. The Journey hasn’t improved on the outside as much as it has on the inside over the years, but it still has a pretty decent look. This car successfully bridges the gap between tall wagons and square-like SUVs. It has a more unique appearance than most other cars in the segment, although we wouldn’t say that it is anything too far out of the ordinary. It exceeds the length of most of the competition and has some chrome details that are eye-catching. Different trim levels will offer more or less the same in terms of exterior features, but notable options include 19-inch alloy wheels and a power sunroof.

As mentioned, the interior of the Journey has undergone some major revisions to bring it to a level that will be competitive in the class. It is finally up to a standard that should win the appreciation of buyers. The Journey’s interior has high-quality fabrics, including soft leather and soft-touch surfaces. The cabin can be configured to carry a lot of people and cargo. With three rows, the Journey can carry seven passengers or just five with the regular configuration. The third row (if used) will fold flush, and the second row seats can slide forward and back for easy access. Functionality is valued in the interior of this car and small details highlight this. One of these is the flip ‘n stow storage, hidden in the front passenger-seat cushion that flips up to expose a big storage bin.

As for technology features, the Journey actually has some of the best in the segment. The 8.4-inch touchscreen interface is offered in all of the models, except the SE. It is pretty easy to use and available with or without navigation. The SXT model can be equipped with a Uconnect media centre that impressively handles a wide range of devices from iPhones to SD cards. This vehicle is available with satellite radio, a premium audio system and a DVD system for the backseat passengers.

The 2015 Journey maintains the same powertrain options as the previous models, depending on the trim level. The lower trims come equipped with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard as is front-wheel drive. Optional on the higher-end trims is a 3.6-litre V6 engine that generates 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive as an option.

Overall, the 2015 Dodge Journey has grown leaps and bounds since its debut six years ago. While it does have a lot to offer in terms of style, space and function, we would suggest waiting until the 2016 model is released to see how much they can add to this mid-size crossover.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the Dodge Journey's materials are high in quality, the design is clean and modern and the available technology is pretty easy to use. We especially like the 8.4-inch touchscreen interface offered in all models except the SE. It's intuitive to use and is available with or without navigation.

Other strengths for the Journey include clever storage bins built into the floor, and options such as a fold-flat front passenger seat and integrated child booster seats for the second row that make life easier for families. Also helping that cause is the Journey's available third-row seat, which is bundled with a separate rear air-conditioner. This seat is far from adult-friendly, but if you need to take a couple extra kids to a T-ball game, it's handy.

Safety features:

Every 2015 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats and rear parking sensors are optional on every Journey. A rearview camera is available as an option on the SXT, Limited and R/T.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, an average performance for this class.
