Quick Look

The Dodge Dart was reintroduced as a five-seat compact sedan in 2013, after an okay career during the 70s. The 2015 Dart is the sleeker, more user-friendly, up-featured, more economical version of that car as well as a solid entry-level option.

Full Review

The Dart is Dodge’s answer to the vacant compact sedan segment, which it hasn’t participated in since the discontinuation of the Neon years ago. In many ways, the Dart actually isn’t that different from the Neon – whether you deem it as a good thing or not. At a glance, the Dart looks good, but there are some fundamental issues that arise the more time you spend with it.

The exterior look of the Dart is what will have buyers intrigued in the first place. The design is a blend of contemporary character and classic Dodge cues. The Dart has a sturdy base that is achieved thanks to its long wheelbase and wide stance. The Dart also gets some fun details, such as a signature front grille and full-width LED “racetrack” taillights. There is also the option for customization with model-specific colours and accent touches.

The Dart is available in five different trim levels, with each giving a different look and feel to this car. Standard features on this four-door sedan are extremely basic, with 16-inch steel wheels being a notable highlight. Moving up to higher trims will get you 18-inch wheels, fog lamps, dual-exhaust tips, a sunroof and more. When it comes to getting the right look, it really depends on the trim level.

The cabin of the Dart is pretty good at a glance. There are lots of soft-touch materials throughout the cabin, complemented by dash stitching and unique interior colours. The unfortunate part for the Dart is that the build quality is suffering a bit and doesn’t hold up next to some of the more refined competition in the segment. However, the cabin is spacious, especially at the front. The rear passengers also get great legroom, though taller passengers might feel a little cramped for head space. The front seats are oddly shaped and feel as though they’re mounted too high, which can be uncomfortable for seat adjustment. As for cargo space, the trunk capacity is 13.1 cubic feet, which is average for the segment.

The technology features on the Dart are surprisingly good for the vehicle and we highly recommend opting for the 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system interface. The features are powered by Chrysler’s Uconnect system, which is a relatively easy system to use. The menus are straight forward, the on-screen buttons are large and the accompanying knob makes going through menus a breeze. The processing times are quick, and the navigation system works well even on the move.

Safety technologies can also be quite plentiful and sophisticated, depending on the trim level. The Technology Group is an optional package that includes parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection and HID headlights.

The Dodge Dart has quite a few powertrain options. The base SE model comes equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. The mid-level Aero gets a 1.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The higher-end SXT, GT and Limited trims get a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is standard on all trims, except for the Limited, which gets a standard six-speed automatic that can be added to any of the other trims.

Overall, the 2015 Dodge Dart is a decent entry-level vehicle, offering several competitive features, such as good cabin space and sophisticated technology. However, it lacks a lot of refinement that can be found in the competitors.

Power and Performance:

Three engines are available for the 2015 Dodge Dart. The base SE model comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 160 hp and 148 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is optional. In Edmunds performance testing, a manual-equipped Dart with this engine accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 9.9 seconds, a slow time for a compact sedan in this price range. An automatic-equipped car would be even slower. The EPA rates the manual version at 29 mpg combined (25 city/36 highway), while the automatic rates 27 mpg combined (24 city/34 highway).

Interiors and Special Features:

The Dodge Dart makes a nice first impression, with padded surfaces, dash stitching and available flares of colorful trim. Build quality isn't exactly up to that of the segment leaders, though. We highly recommend springing for the available 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface, which you can get with or without a navigation system. It features straightforward menus, large on-screen buttons and an accompanying knob that makes whipping through iPod menus a breeze. Processing times are quick, too, and if you need to enter a destination on the move, the voice control works surprisingly well. In Darts without this interface, the standard stereo head unit clumsily plugs into the same spot, reinforcing the notion that you missed out on something better.

Safety features:

Every 2015 Dodge Dart comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. A rearview camera is available on most trims. The optional Technology package on the GT and Limited includes rear parking sensors, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
