Quick Look

The RS 5 has made a name for itself in the Audi lineup as the model second only to the R8 in the Audi two-door hierarchy. The “RS” badging stands for Renn Sport, which literally translates to Racing Sport. This car has a dynamic blend of power and sophistication that will please any luxury sport car seeker.

Full Review

The Audi RS 5 is based on the rather ordinary A5 platform, but what tweaks that made this model come about are extraordinary. The RS 5 is a high-performance vehicle that is available in either a coupe or convertible body style. This A5 variant was first introduced as the halo vehicle of the modern lineup in 2010, although there have been different RS variants to grace other models, such as the S3, S4, and TT. There were also high-performance versions that date back as early as the 1990s.

For 2015, the RS 5 only gets a few minor changes, including updates to its options list such as three new wheel designs, a Black Optic package and red-painted brake calipers. While the RS 5 is only available in one, well-equipped trim level, there are different packages that will personalize and upgrade the vehicle. The RS 5 is one of the best examples of the merge between style and performance, and this vehicle would be a privilege for any enthusiast to own.

The RS 5 can either take on a coupe or convertible body style, but the standard exterior features in both are pretty much on par. This car is the poster child for the lineup as it truly looks as good as it feels. The flowing lines and curved edges give this vehicle a sleek profile that distinguishes it on the road, while being humble in its design – a beautiful car without being overbearing. Touches like the wide body panels also make for a more muscular look that separates this car from its siblings and competition alike. The standard features that are available on the RS 5 include 19-inch wheels, dual exhausts, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights with washers, LED running lights and taillights, an adaptive rear spoiler and a tilt-only panoramic sunroof among a long list of other features. The cabriolet model comes with a power-operated soft top roof that is tight-fitting and multilayer to provide impressive insulation from road noise and weather.

The package options that are available on the RS 5 will alter the look and function of the vehicle. The most notable of them is the all-new Black Optics package, which will upgrade features to 20-inch unique wheels, a gloss-black grille, gloss-black window trim, body-coloured mirrors, a carbon-fibre engine cover and sport exhaust system with black finishers.

The RS 5 is built with top-quality materials and an impeccable build quality that is rivaled by few. The design is understated yet beautiful in its simplicity, which is appreciated by many. The standard front seats are comfortable enough for daily driving and firm enough in case you’re feeling a little more dangerous. There is ample headspace and legroom at the front to comfortably accommodate larger passengers. The same cannot be said of the rear seat, however, where tight legroom and limited headspace will jeopardize the comfort of most passengers. The cargo space in the RS 5 is quite decent in both the convertible, which has 10.2 cubic feet of space with the top stowed, and the coupe, which has two cubes more.

The technology features on the RS 5 are quite sophisticated, but for some can be a point of contention. Although Audi has offered its state-of-the-art technology in the Multi Media Interface (MMI) infotainment system, there are still some tweaks that require some ironing out in the base package. The system was designed to have all of the information and entertainment features located in one, easy-to-use system, and the outcome was pretty close. Unfortunately, the menus are a bit difficult to navigate and some basic functions are buried behind multiple screens.

Under the hood of the 2015 Audi RS 5 is where the real magic comes to life. This vehicle is powered by a 4.2-litre V8 engine that produces 450 horsepower and 316 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission with shift paddles and standard all-wheel drive. The RS 5 coupe makes the sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, while the heavier convertible does so in 4.6 seconds.

Overall, the 2015 Audi RS 5 is a quality choice for those looking to blend everyday luxury with a solid amount of power and performance. This car does not only know how to perform well with the pedal to the metal, but also can look good doing so.

Interiors and Special Features:

The RS 5's interior receives high marks for its understated design and use of top-notch materials, but functionality is hit-or-miss. Our main complaint is that the standard dash-mounted MMI controls aren't as easy to operate as the Technology package's upgraded interface. With the standard layout, you have to go through more steps to accomplish basic tasks, and the controls require an awkward reach beyond the shifter. With the Technology package, however, the controls move the center console to where they fall readily to hand. Moreover, this version of MMI includes upgraded software that provides simplified menus and the nifty Web-based features of Audi Connect (see above)
