The Volvo XC90 has been the main stage act of the manufacture’s lineup since it’s introduction back in 2002. It’s been their best-selling model for many years. The 2013 model year received a major refresher and three small but noticeable changes including colour coordination for the outside of the vehicle, silver mirror caps, mud flaps, and roof rails along the top of the car. The 2014 Volvo XC90 comes back with minor adjustments to improve upon its already successful image and giving us even more reasons to love it.

Some of the minor updates Volvo introduced to the 2014 XC90 are the standard executive carpets and the new stand-alone option for sovereign hide leather on any model. This SUV is a great value, you get a lot of standard features even with the base trim of the car. These include leather interior, a moonroof, a third row, an iPod adapter, Bluetooth, and Sirius satellite radio. There’s a lot to love about the 2014 Volvo XC90, and it doesn’t stop at the standard features of the car.

The powerhouse for the 2014 Volvo XC90 features a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine. This little guy will give 240 horsepower, and 236 pound-feet of torque, that’s more than enough to get you and your kids to and from soccer practice. As for gas mileage, the 2014 Volvo XC90 is at an estimated 14.7 L/100km city driving and 10.2 L/100km on the highway. Not entirely impressive, but neither the worst out of its class either. Thankfully, no need to fill up the tank with premium gas. The XC90 will happily take regular fuel.

The 2014 Volvo XC90 is available in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive powertrains. Despite the fact that the XC90 comes with a plethora of awesome standard features, the Premier Plus model comes with some really cool extras for the people who really want to ride in style. This package gets you xenon headlights, the HomeLink system, as well as some beautiful wood trim on the inside of the vehicle. The top of the line model is the Platinum model which gives you all those features as well as navigation, park assist camera, and a premium sound system.

The 2014 XC90 also offers some great stand-alone options such as heated front seats, the all-wheel-drive system, 19” wheels, and additional wood trim for the steering wheel if you really want to feel luxurious.

The interior of the 2014 XC90 features some really nice premium materials detailing the inside of the vehicle. The car is extremely configurable, allowing you to fold away and store the backseats if you need to take along larger items.

The 2014 Volvo XC90 is a wonderful car for the modern family on the go. If you’re looking for a fun ride with great looks to match, look no further than this year’s Volvo XC90.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Volvo XC90 isn't exciting to drive, but it's not necessarily meant to be. Instead, it's a confident all-weather performer that keeps family comfort and convenience in mind.

There's only one drivetrain available: a 3.2-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It's available as either front- or all-wheel drive, and there's a Haldex 'Instant Traction' option available for the all-wheel-drive system.

In general, the XC90's powertrain feels lively and smooth, with strong pulling power and an engine that's happy to sing up the rev range. Unfortunately the handling doesn't feel the same way; it's responsive enough, but never engaging, and you'll be aware of the XC's heft. But it's a safe handler and never feels unstable or tipsy, even with riders in the third row.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Volvo XC90's interior layout strays from the typical form-over-function designs of its competitors. While it can be outfitted with warm wood and sumptuous leather, XC90 designers focused primarily on clever ergonomics and distinguishable controls. Supportive side bolstering, plush padding and creamy leather trim make for some of the most comfortable front seats in its class. Although the 3rd-row seat is best suited for children, it does feature a versatile 50/50-split fold-flat design for various seating and cargo configurations. The 2nd-row seat is fairly roomy and includes a sliding middle seat so parents can position a child closer to the front seats.

Among the 2014 XC90's range of standard features is dual-zone automatic climate control with a 3rd-row control panel, power front seats, Bluetooth hands-free phone capability, rear sonar proximity sensors for parking assistance, leather seating surfaces, power moonroof, front and rear fog lights, illuminated remote keyless entry and dual heated power mirrors. The standard sound system features eight speakers, USB and auxiliary audio input ports for MP3/WMA players and HD Radio. The sporty R-Design adds a special grille and trim, sport front seats, the Nivomat self-leveling rear suspension and 19-inch wheels. Safety equipment includes anti-submarining seats to help prevent occupants from slipping out of their seatbelts during a collision.

The 2014 Volvo XC90 offers all-wheel drive for both the 3.2 and R-Design models. For a more simplified ordering process, the majority of available features for the XC90 are now grouped together within trims. The XC90 3.2 is offered in base, Premier Plus or Platinum trims, while the R-Design comes in base and Platinum trim. The Premier Plus trim includes bi-xenon headlights, upgraded leather-trimmed seating surfaces and interior wood inlays (now standard on R-Design). Platinum trims include a navigation system, rearview camera and a 650-watt, 12-speaker premium audio system.

Safety features:

The 2014 Volvo XC90's standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, anti-whiplash front seats and a handy child booster seat built into the center position of the second row. A rearview camera is available via an option package. A blind-spot warning system is also optional, but the multitude of advanced accident-prevention technologies available on other Volvo models are not offered on the XC90.

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash testing, the XC90 earned the organization's top "Good" rating in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, roof strength and head restraints/seats crash tests.
