The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg may cost up to $50,000, but with such a stylish cabin, three powerful engines and countless special features, there are few cars that can match this SUV in terms of sheer quality. Its 3.0-litre supercharged V6 is particularly impressive since it can produce 380 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque.

With a price of $50,975, we would be hard-pressed to call the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg a cheap car. However, once you look at everything this SUV has to offer, you’ll realize just how little Volkswagen is really charging us. After all, its base was jointly designed with Audi and Porsche, who have implemented it in the Q7 and Cayenne respectively – both of which are more expensive than the Touareg. So, if you’re looking for a luxury crossover that looks even pricier than it already is, read on.

The new Volkswagen Touareg has lost quite a bit of weight between now and 2011 – both literally and aesthetically. As a result, the SUV’s sheetmetal is now both slick and slender, featuring tight design that doesn’t look excessive from any given angle. You’ll find plenty of Volkswagen trademark design features and sporty details, particularly in the grille and front end, all of which amount to a very versatile look – one that makes this car seem suitable for off-roading and urban driving.

On the inside, things get even more impressive – in a tasteful and stylish manner. Let’s not forget that Volkswagen specializes in design that doesn’t necessarily wow you right away, instead trying to impress you with all the little details. The Touareg is no different in this respect. It features well-finished material, like V-Tex Leatherette seating surfaces in the Sport models and real leather in Lux, R-Line and Executive trims.

This decidedly luxurious cabin can fit up to five individuals, offering plenty of comfort and space both at the back and front. The front seats are particularly commendable thanks to high seating position and extra support. The back bench can comfortably fit two adults and three kids. It can also slide fore-aft and recline. Unfortunately, there is no model with third-row seating, but to compensate for that, Volkswagen has provided a very decently-sized trunk – which can be expanded if you fold down the second-row seats. This is the kind of quality you’d find in an Audi SQ5, but here you get for a much lower price.

But comfortable seating isn’t all the 2014 Touareg’s cabin has to offer. There are also multitudes of special features. The Sport models offer a panoramic sunroof and memory seats, while Executive and Hybrid variants come with premium audio, rear-obstacle detection, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry and heated rear seats. Other features are a 620-watt Dynaudio premium sound system and a navigation system with a built-in display and music storage.

If you decide to pop the Touareg’s hood open, you’ll find that it offers a selection of three engines. There’s a 3.6-litre VR6, which can pump out 280 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, while offering very reasonable fuel economy. Next up is the 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel V6 that generates 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. If fuel economy is your goal, then this engine would make the best choice since it carriers the EPA rating of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. However, if having as much power as possible is your goal, then you might want to choose the 3.0-litre supercharged V6, which will give you 380 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. Predictably, this power comes at the cost of fuel economy, so be mindful of that.

In the end, few SUVs are as impressive yet “affordable” as the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg. It’s powerful, comfortable and good-looking. If you have the money – then definitely give this one a look.

Power and Performance:

The modern Touareg doesn't drive like the model that preceded it, so if you're expecting a crossover that drives like something much larger, take a second look. It was redesigned in 2011, where VW trimmed 450 pounds from its weight–fuel efficiency and driving dynamics improved, unless you were looking for something a little more tank-like.

The Hybrid doesn't make much fiscal sense to us, for the performance you get or for its $15k higher sticker price. Meanwhile, the Hybrid's 380 horses and 428 lb-ft of torque is enough to scoot out from a stop nicely, but it feels more sluggish and deliberate in its motions. In this model, an electric motor system is sandwiched between the engine and the transmission, with clutches on either end so that the electric motor can power the vehicle by itself under light load, at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. The Touareg Hybrid model incorporates a start-stop system and regenerative braking; and the hybrid system allows the transmission to smartly—and completely—disengage from the engine, to allow coasting long distances at higher speed.

Those who plan to tow (capacity is 7,700 pounds for all engines), or those who are motivated by the idea of much better mileage on the highway will want to head straight for the clean-diesel 3.0-liter V-6 TDI. It's our favorite of the lineup, with its strong torque output (407 lb-ft) and confident feel for towing or highway cruising. And the engine in 2014 models steps up to 240 hp and even better fuel efficiency (19 mpg city, 28 highway).

Eight-speed automatic transmissions and full-time four-wheel drive are the building blocks in the powertrain department, while under the hood there are three quite different engine choices. Base versions get a conventional gasoline V-6--a 3.6-liter, 280-horsepower narrow-angle V-6 (VR6)--while two other versions show the way toward both more power and better gas mileage, albeit at a premium. The gasoline V-6 in the base Touareg is plenty quick, thanks in part to the eight-speed, which keeps revs up when you need it (it's not much of an engine for low-end torque), and unless you're a green-minded shopper willing to pay thousands extra for a slightly lower carbon footprint, it's fine for most tasks.

The Touareg is still no crisp handler—few crossovers are, really—but it's now as nimble and responsive as many of its rivals.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Touareg's interior lacks the glitz and glamour of traditional luxury-brand SUVs, but there's a strong vibe of quality and craftsmanship nonetheless. The materials are generally rich-feeling and pleasing to the eye, while the knobs and levers move with well-weighted precision. Although the Touareg doesn't provide a fancy infotainment system with a silly name, it does give you a standard touchscreen interface with a large screen and sharp graphics. Even better, it's easy to use. The Executive model's punchy Dynaudio sound system is one of our favorites; shame you can't get it on lower trim levels.

The Touareg is strictly a two-row, five-passenger SUV, but its rear seat is quite versatile, offering reclining seatback cushions and 6.3 inches of fore/aft seat travel. Rear-seat legroom is competitive for a midsize SUV, while the seat bottom is high enough to give rear passengers both solid thigh support and a nice view out. Cargo capacity measures 32.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 64 cubic feet with the 60/40-split rear seatbacks folded down.

Safety features:

The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg comes with standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and six airbags (front, front-side, and full-length side-curtain).

The government hasn't crash tested this Touareg, but the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Touareg its highest rating of Good in every testing category.
