Quick Look

The 2014 Volkswagen Eos may be one of the most boring-looking convertibles in its price range. But those who can overlook that will find that its heart is definitely in the right place; it offers excellent performance, a comfortable cabin and a wide variety of practical features. Its DSG transmission and Dynaudio sound system are particularly impressive as is the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder under its hood.

Full Review

The 2014 Volkswagen Eos lives up to its creator’s reputation by offering conservative and modest design that’s just plain boring. However, if you’re willing to look past the way it looks, you’ll find a convertible that offers excellent performance, refined handling and more than plenty of practical features. In other words, don’t judge a book by its cover – especially when that book is this good.

On the outside, the 2014 Eos looks a little bit like a hardtop coupe, but the cut-lines are visible enough to indicate that it is indeed a convertible. To make the conservative design pop a little, you get an impressive selection of paint colours along with features like LED taillights and 17-or 18-inch wheels. And thanks to integrated side-mirror turn signals, chrome dual exhaust outlets and a large black-glass sunroof built into the three-piece retractable hardtop, the Eos has an effortless premium-car feel to it. But, in spite of all that, there’s nothing in this car that stands out. As soon as you take your eyes away from it, you forget what it looks like – but that’s okay because a good car doesn’t have to be a knockout beauty (though it certainly helps).

On the inside, you can enjoy the Eos’ five-piece retractable hardtop that comes with an integrated tilting/sliding sunroof. It is a convertible when you want it to be and a hardtop coupe when you want something else. It takes about 25 seconds for the top to retract – though you will need roughly 16 inches of clearance behind the rear bumper to use it. The cabin itself is adorned with high-quality materials, so you definitely get that luxury feel.

Size-wise, the Eos spacious enough, especially at the front, but the backseat can be a bit rough for adults because the hardtop mechanism forces the backrest to a more upright angle. The cargo space is limited at best – all thanks to the retractable top, which leaves only 6.6 cubic feet of trunk capacity. If you raise the top, that number increases to 10.5 cubic feet, which is a little better, but don’t expect to fit too many items in there.

When it comes to features though, the Volkswagen definitely shines. The base touchscreen interface in Komfort and Sport provide excellent audio standpoint with a fantastic iPod interface. However, navigation functionality is a bit of an annoyance due to the screen's small size. The Executive model does feature a larger screen, but the interface is slower at processing commands regardless of whether you're changing a radio station or entering a destination. Still, it’s one of the more functional cabins out there (especially given the price).

If you pop the hood open, you’ll fine a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and DSG transmission. And thanks to FSI direct fuel injection mitigating turbo lag, the engine is incredibly responsive. The innovative DSG transmission can also function as an automatic or a no-pedal manual, depending on your preferences.

As far as convertibles go, the 2014 Volkswagen Eos is definitely odd. It’s not as low-priced as the Chrysler 200 yet it is more affordable than the BMW 1-Series luxury convertible. It’s also more refined than rugged vehicles like the Ford Mustang and more practical than off-roaders like the Mazda MX-5 Miata.  In other words, with so much to offer, the Eos more than justifies its hefty price tag of $39,975. So, forget about the way it looks and give this car a look!

Power and Performance:

There are only two ways to have the Eos–if you're counting transmissions–but its engine lends a little bit of pep and personality no matter how you slice it.

The 2014 Eos is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 200 horsepower. It's teamed only to a dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission called 'DSG.' The former manual transmission option is no more. We prefer DSG anyway, thanks to its quick gear shifts and excellent use of the engine's power and torque.

In a class of overweight convertibles, the Eos is one of the lightest, at 3,500 pounds; and it handles that way. The Eos handles with more finesse than its relaxed boulevard-cruiser looks imply. It's firm enough to power through tricky corners, planted in higher-speed sweepers, and remarkably secure-feeling for a front-driver. Dynamically it's no sports car, but with quick steering, strong, reassuring brakes, and the responsive DSG transmission, it feels very eager.

Interiors and Special Features:

The VW Eos' interior is more intelligently designed and better assembled than cars we've driven costing twice as much. The Executive trim's premium leather seating and 12-way power-adjustable front seats (including 4-way power-adjustable lumbar) are supremely comfortable, and the touch-screen audio head unit is among the most intuitive we've tested. As it has to accommodate much of the retractable top's mechanicals, the Eos' rear seat is understandably narrow and not much use for grown adults. With the top in place, the Eos offers a modest 10.5 cubic feet of trunk space, but once the top is retracted space shrinks to just 6.6 cubic feet.

Safety features:

The 2014 Volkswagen Eos comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, pop-up rollover bars and front side airbags that extend upward for head protection. A rearview camera and parking sensors are standard on the Executive trim level. Standard on all Eos models, VW's new Car-Net telematics system includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go.

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash testing, the VW Eos earned a top rating of "Good" for both the moderate-overlap frontal-offset and side-impact tests. It also earned a Good rating for its seat/head restraint design in the Institute's rear-impact testing.
