Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

When you walk into a Volkswagen dealership, this is the sedan your eyes will find first. It’s the company’s design star – the 2014 CC. This year’s redesigned model is impressive in a number of ways. Despite most of the Volkswagen lineup being a little bit bland, the 2014 CC definitely proves otherwise. The sleek, sophisticated styling coupled with the chrome details and 18” wheels available as an option make for an extremely attractive sedan to cruise around town in.

Just when we thought the CC had lost a little bit of its mojo, we took the VR6 4Motion Executive model out for a test drive and instantly made us change our mind. The styling on the 2014 Volkswagen CC is undeniably stylish and is worth a double take. You can’t beat the paint and rim combo of Fortana Red, and 18” Lakeville wheels. The meaty rubber also adds to the esthetics, as well as to the CC’s stellar stickiness to the road. All told, it might be the best CC we’ve seen thus far from Volkswagen.

What really had us surprised was the level of performance that exists in the 2014 Volkswagen CC. The car is available with an option of two engines. The first is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine which returns 200-horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Upgrade to the 4Motion VR6 and you’re looking at 280-horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque.

In respect to the engine, this kind of sound, this level of acceleration, and the CC’s road carving abilities are something that really blew us out of the water. The 4Motion system combined with the A-level tires keep this car amazingly well planted no matter what your right foot commands. With 280-horsepower and a beautifully matched 6-speed automatic transmission to match, this powertrain is exceptionally satisfying. The confident grip of the all-wheel-drive system sends as much power to the rear as needed and is a perfect fit for this eager chassis.

Although the handling inside the 2014 Volkswagen CC is crisp, the ride quality is still VW smooth. It’s the perfect blend for this kind of a sedan – comfortable, quiet, and self-assured.

So what’s new for the 2014 CC? Following Ford and BMW’s lead, you can now access the CC’s 13 cubic feet trunk just by swiping your foot underneath the car. If you want to spread that room into the rear seats, this can be done easily as well as Volkswagen has installed new levers near the opening of the trunk which lower the back seats with a simple pull.

Despite the coupe profile, the rear seats in the 2014 Volkswagen CC sit low to ensure there is enough headroom for adults, legroom is spacious too. In the front, you’ll be treated to somewhat firm yet supportive quilted leather seats with heat and cooling, and even a massage on the driver’s side. Frontward visibility is wonderful in the 2014 CC thanks to the car’s low profile, and the Bi-Xenon adaptive headlights make nighttime driving that much safer.

The 2014 Volkswagen CC is the perfect sedan for any Canadian family that wants to get around in style. For a smooth ride that looks great, look no further than the 2014 Volkswagen CC.

Power and Performance:

There's only one way to get the CC, in our opinion: with the 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (2.0T). Models with it feel lighter and more nimble than their top-of-the-line VR6 4Motion counterparts. The four churns out plenty of low- and mid-rev torque with only a slight delay if revs are at the low end, while the narrow-angle VR6 is spirited but seems to take a moment more to build steam.

Parsing it out by price, the even the base $31,795 CC essentially drives just much like the Passat in one of its more luxurious guises--with refinement clearly taking the priority over edginess or all-out performance.

With direct injection and turbocharging, the four makes 200 hp and 207 pound-feet of torque. There's only the slightest delay in response at low revs; it really feels like a larger engine, and the DSG dual-clutch automatic helps make the most of it with clap-quick shifts. A six-speed manual is standard on the Sport, though, if that's the way you like it.

As for how the CC handles, the best way to put it is that if you expect the obsessively tweaked and tuned chassis of a German sport sedan, you're likely to be a little bit disappointed; on the other hand, if you're comparing the CC to mass-market,comfort-oriented mid-size sedans, the CC stands out as quite athletic and graceful. There's plenty of body lean near the limit, but the CC doesn't at all feel out of its element on a curvy road, and the steering loads and unloads nicely.

The steering feel itself is a little too light for our tastes in ordinary, around-town driving, although there's just enough weighting on center to give it a relaxed demeanor on the highway. Brakes remain strong and capable.

If you opt for one of the 2014 Volkswagen CC models with the 2.0T engine, what you're getting is a reasonably fuel-efficient sedan that is about par among rival models--if not a bit better--at an EPA-rated 11.2 L/100km in the city and 7.59 L/100km on the highway.

Go with the VR6, and you'll find its just as thirsty as some SUVs, at 13.8 L/100km city, 9.4 highway; to us, that model's additional performance doesn't nearly justify its much greater consumption.

Interiors and Special Features:

From the base Sport model to the top-of-the-line VR6 4Motion Executive trim, the 2014 Volkswagen CC shows off the luxury amenities and workmanship normally associated with luxury brands. The standard vinyl-leatherette upholstery is not only convincing but also looks and feels better than some of the genuine leather found in other cars. Other interior materials are well-textured, and the majority are soft to the touch. The CC is also a notable step up from the Passat.

We're less fond of the CC's touchscreen displays. The Sport and R-Line models have a lower-cost navigation unit with a small touchscreen display. You get a usefully larger screen in the Executive, but we've found this higher-end interface slower to process commands whether you're searching for songs on your smartphone or entering a destination.

The front seats offer a plethora of adjustments to fit nearly any body type. Rear-seat headroom is limited by the sloping roof line, so taller rear passengers will find themselves slouching to fit, but average-sized adults should find these seats supportive and comfortable, with ample legroom. The rear middle seat that was added last year (increasing the CC's seating capacity from four to five) is certainly welcome, as it allows you to make that desirable spot a semi-permanent location for a child's car seat or squeeze in an extra person on occasion.

The split-folding rear seats feature a center pass-through to add to the 13 cubic feet of trunk space, which is a bit small for a midsize sedan. As a result, a golf bag will need to lie diagonally within the trunk, limiting the ability to accommodate additional luggage.

Safety features:

Every 2014 Volkswagen CC comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. A rearview camera comes on the Executive and VR6 4Motion Executive. The Executive also has front and rear parking sensors, though some newer safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring, aren't available on the CC.

This year's CC does come with VW's new Car-Net telematics system. It includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go.

In Edmunds brake testing, a CC R-Line came to a stop from 60 mph in 120 feet, which is a good performance for its class. The heavier VR6 required 127 feet to come to a complete stop.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the CC its highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests. In the small-overlap frontal-offset test, however, the CC earned a "Marginal" score, which is the second-to-lowest rating. The CC's seats and head restraints earned a "Good" rating for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
