The 2014 Toyota Tundra is an improvement over the last year's model in almost every way, offering more space, comfort and power than ever before. The cabin in particular has received several significant upgrades, including a more accessible layout of controls and higher-quality materials. On the outside things have changed too, thanks to elevated hood and larger grille.

With the Tundra, Toyota is making its first steps into the full-size truck market – that has for years been dominated by the likes of Ram, GM and Ford. The 2014 Toyota Tundra continues to carve its way through this brutal competition by offering just enough on- and off-road capabilities to be on par with its rivals. This year's model mainly benefits primarily from a redesigned cabin and several upgrades to its body, both of which allow the truck to stand out from the crowd just a touch more than before.

The 2014 Tundra is comes in three cab configurations as well as three bed lengths. You get the regular- and double-cab models with a standard 78.7-inch bed or a long 97.6-inch bed. But if you're looking for a really large cab, then the CrewMax model what you need – though its bed is only 66.7 inches long, which makes it the shortest one in the lineup. To make the choice here, you really need to know what important to you: room for passengers or cargo space.

As for the aforementioned upgrades to the exterior – those include the Tundra's all-new hood, which has been raised and integrated into the grille in a more seamless manner. The grille itself is much bigger and more aggressive than before, while at the back, the lockable tailgate can be lowered slowly to avoid the always-annoying tailgate slam.

Once you make your way into the cabin, you'll find even more surprises – since the interior has received a significant revamp. The controls and layout have a much cooler look to them, while being much easier to access and use than before. In fact, audio and climate control have been placed 2.6 inches closer to the driver. The quality of interior materials seems higher now as well, especially if you consider the leather appointments available for the upper-trim models.

Some of the notable special features include a touchscreen display, which is available in all models, and Entune. The latter is a collection of smartphone-integrated services like the Bing search engine, Pandora streamin radio, real-time traffic and sports and stock data. Despite the wide array of features that Entune provides, using the system can a bit of a pain since you always need an active data connection for it to work as well as a special app on your phone with a registered account. Once you jump through all these hoops, however, you'll be rewarded with plenty of benefits.

At the end of the day, what truly matter in a pickup truck is what's underneath its hood. The new Toyota Tundra provides you with a selection of three engines, all of which offer top quality. The base engine is the 4.0-litre V6, which is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and made available in SR rear-wheel-drive regular cab and double-cab models. Next up is the 4.6-litre V8, which you'll find in four-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive SR5 variants. If, however, you looking for as much power as possible, then you'll want the 5.7-litre V8, which graces the Limited trim and beyond, being able to produce 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. With this engine equipped, the 2014 Tundra can tow up to 10,400 pounds. Just like the other V8, this one can be paired only with a six-speed automatic – which isn't bad at all.

At the end of the day, the 2014 Toyota Tundra is fine alternative to ever-popular trucks like the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500. It offers as much power, space and comfort as they do. So, if you can look past the fact that Toyota isn't a North American brand, then you'll be treated to a very rewarding driving experience.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Toyota Tundra is offered with a choice of three engines and rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Unlike on the competition, each engine comes with a single rear axle ratio, making it easier to configure a truck that meets your needs.

Rear-wheel-drive SR models come with a 4.0-liter V6 that puts out 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 17 mpg combined (16 mpg city/20 mpg highway).

Next up is a 4.6-liter V8 that produces 310 hp and 327 lb-ft of torque. It's optional for the 2WD SR double cab and standard for the 4WD SR double cab and all SR5 models. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 16 mpg combined (15 mpg city/19 mpg highway) on 2WD models; 4WD versions also rate 16 mpg combined but have lower city/highway figures.

A 5.7-liter V8 is the most powerful engine available for the 2014 Tundra. It's standard on 4WD regular cabs and all Limited, Platinum and 1794 trims, and optional on the other models. It generates 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque, and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 15 mpg combined (13 mpg city/18 mpg highway) on two-wheel-drive models; 4WD models also rate 15 mpg combined but drop a point on the highway rating.

A tow package is standard on all Tundras equipped with the 5.7-liter V8, and towing capacity tops out at 10,400 pounds when properly equipped.

Interiors and Special Features:

The most notable differences in the 2014 Toyota Tundra come on the inside. The truck's big knobs remain (easier to use with gloved hands), but the controls and layout are sleeker. They're also within easier reach of the driver. To be exact, controls for audio and climate functions have been moved 2.6 inches closer. Regular-cab models seat three passengers across, while the 2-row double cab and even larger CrewMax 4-door models seat five or six passengers, depending on whether the front is configured for a bench or two bucket seats. A helpful feature from the past model that did not find its way into this one is a driver's-side grab handle.

Safety features:

The 2014 Toyota Tundra hasn't been crash tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) yet, but the very similar 2013 Tundra rated four stars overall from the NHTSA and earned a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS.

For 2014, Toyota adds a new Blind Spot Monitor with Cross Traffic Alert, a first for any full-size pickup in the U.S., included with the Limited CrewMax, Platinum, and 1794 Edition models.

Other standard Tundra safety features include: eight airbags; vehicle stability control and traction control; anti-lock brakes; electronic brake-force distribution; brake assist; and Smart Stop brake-override technology. Platinum and 1794 Editions also get LED daytime running lights.
