Quick Look

The 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-In is a five-door hatchback that is every bit as good as the regular Prius, if not better. Some of the features to watch out for include heated cloth front seats and a Remote Climate system, which allows the driver to control the car’s air conditioning remotely. The vehicle also effectively combines a 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gas engine with a 60kW electric motor to deliver a reasonably powerful and super-efficient powerplant.

Full Review

The 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-In is every bit as good, if not better, as the standard Prius, offering a plethora of new features and phenomenal fuel economy. Some of the features that separate it from the older models include heated cloth front seats and a Remote Climate system. The latter lets drivers turn on the car’s air conditioning from a distance. However, those are not the only things to look out for. As Toyota’s dedicated hybrid car, it effortlessly blows the competition – like the Honda Civic Hybrid, Mazda3 and several others – out of the water. Now let’s take a look at the reasons why.

The exterior isn’t mind-blowing, but it does its job – and does it well. The five-door hatchback manages to be both aerodynamic and functional. The roof bears a “triangular” shape as it curves rearward at the apex, giving the car an almost sporty appearance and increasing headroom inside. The Plug-In comes with 15-inch wheels, but there’s also the option of adding 17-inch wheels in the Prius Five. The Plug-In model also features a slightly different grille, wheels, lights and door handles from the rest of them, and comes with a port for the power cable on the right side and gas cap on the other. In short, the 2014 Prius Plug-In is a better-looking car than the standard version.

Peek inside and you’ll find a fairly standard, if not a bit uninspired cabin. Despite the lacklustre design, you get several nifty features. Those include heated front seats, Remote Climate system, push-button start, cloth upholstery, dual glovebox, Bluetooth and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel. You also get a multi-information display that allows you to look up hybrid functions. Then there a 6.1-inch Display Audio touchscreen that comes with a six-speaker audio system, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, CD player, USB port, auxiliary input jack, rearview camera and navigation system.

Under the hood, the 2014 Prius Plug-In comes with the Hybrid Synergy Drive and a 176-pound lithium-ion battery, which sits under the back cargo floor. The powertrain itself is a combination of a 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gas engine and 60kW electric motor. The combined torque amounts to 153 pound-feet, while the gas engine produces 98 horsepower, with the electric motor increasing that number to 134 horsepower. This powertrain is combined with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, which sends power to the front wheels. And if you want to achieve better fuel economy and performance, you can use the electric motor or the gas engine separately.

Overall, the 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-In is just as versatile and efficient as the standard version. It’s definitely not a car for everyone due to its low power output, but it is good enough for what it is. So, if you’re looking for an environmentally-friendly car and you don’t mind sacrificing a bit of performance, then this option may be exactly what you need.

Power and Performance:

The larger lithium-ion battery pack in the 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-In gives much longer electric range (the EPA says 11 miles overall, though only 6 miles continuously before the engine has to switch on) and electric-only power at higher speeds. If you have a very light foot, you can keep the car running on electricity only up to almost 50 mph. Otherwise, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid performs just like a regular Prius, but feels heavier on the road (the weight difference is about 300 pounds). Unlike most other Plug-Ins, the charge-port door is on the right-rear fender. The 3.3-kilowatt onboard charger will fully recharge a fully-discharged battery in about 3 hours using conventional 110-volt household current. If you have access to a 240-volt Level 2 charging station, it's less than 2 hours.
