Full Review

Despite being the top-selling sedan for such a long time, many critics have always complained about the dull look of the car. The 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid maintains the facelift it received back in 2012 in order to bring it up to modern standards of other competitors such as the Ford Fusion Hybrid or the Toyota Prius. At $26,990 drive-away price, the 2014 Camry Hybrid is a steal. Toyota chopped off $6,000 from the original price due to falling sales in the car market, and to entice drivers to lean toward a greener, more efficient choice.

This hybrid sedan is quickly becoming one of the favourites among consumers thanks to its responsive handling and peppy acceleration. The Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima hybrid models don’t stand a chance against the Camry Hybrid thanks to its level of refinement, seamless integration of electric propulsion and gas engine, as well as isolation from the judders of engine stops and starts. Compared to the Hyundai Sonata, the Camry Hybrid has a smoother operating system and better fuel economy. The Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is also a fair competitor and offers a sportier drive but much less room on the inside. The Camry Hybrid may not set your hair on fire with its power, but why should it? It’s a great vehicle to get you where you need to be, all while being environmentally-and-wallet friendly.

The exterior body of the Toyota Camry Hybrid has a clean, sophisticated look. Toyota has introduced the Camry Hybrid to give consumers a more formal-looking hybrid in comparison to the funky hatchback look of the Prius. The 2014 Camry Hybrid also has great visibility, like the original Camry model, and offers a comfortable interior. The cabin features comfortable seating, a fair-sized cabin and the option of adding a touchscreen media system. Although the cabin size isn’t as large as that of the Ford Fusion, the layout of the car gives it more of a cozy feel and allows for five adults to ride together comfortably.

Profile

The 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid has faced a lot of criticism when consumers claimed it looked too much like the preceding model. Toyota has actually redesigned the panels for the 2014 model to give it more of a fresh and crisp look.

The 2014 Camry Hybrid comes in two trim levels: LE and XLE. The LE package comes with 16-inch steel wheels; automatic headlights; keyless ignition/entry; dual-zone automatic climate control; full power accessories; cruise control; a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel; trip computer; wireless phone and audio connectivity; a 6.1-inch display and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player; auxiliary input; and USB/iPod interface. Upgrade to the XLE package and you get 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, an eight-way power driver seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and rear seat air vents. The rearview mirror now comes as a standard on both trim levels for all the 2014 models. To say the least, the 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid has a lot to offer and can be tailored to suit the needs of any consumer.

Back in 2012, Toyota gave the Camry Hybrid a facelift in order to help it compete with the lux of the Honda Accord Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The exterior of the car features sophisticated twists and curves, giving the sedan more of a formal look. The headlights are very contoured and endow the car with a more aggressive face. Overall, Toyota sought to make the Camry a little bit sportier in order to get it the attention it deserves.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid is available in two trim levels: LE or XLE. Both models have front-wheel drive and come stock with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Despite being a hybrid, the Camry Hybrid packs a lot of punch in the pedal, pumping out 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Users can also upgrade to the 3.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which boosts it up to 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque.

The fuel economy for the 2014 Camry Hybrid is unbelievable, clocking in at 4.5L/100km city driving and 4.9L/100km on the highway for the 2.5-liter engine. Now those are some numbers you can’t resist! The engine also includes a continuously variable transmission (CVT) which makes driving much smoother and enjoyable. Of course, that’s no surprise for the Camry since it’s already well-known for its smooth and quiet ride. What is surprising though is its new-found sporty handling, even on the lower trim levels. The wider tires, sharper steering and firmer suspension all make for a fun and enjoyable ride. It might not be a car you’re going to take to the racetrack, but you can definitely have a bit of fun with it.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of the 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid features nice soft-touch materials and wonderful details to match the beautiful exterior of the car. It doesn’t feel as cheap as some of the sedans in this class have become notorious for. The techy central display screen is very handy, but can be a bit finicky when trying to maneuver the device while driving. Other than that, the buttons and controls are large and clear, much better than the squished display of the Ford Fusion Hybrid. The display and overall layout of the interior may not be that of a Lexus, but it is definitely a step up for a hybrid class sedan.

Visibility in the 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid is superb. The power seats that you can add as an option give you the advantage of adjusting the seat height, making it adaptable to any driver’s height. The seats are a little stiff, but provide a comfortable ride for the most part. A definite bonus of the Camry Hybrid is the low noise level inside the car from the engine. The drive is smooth and quiet, offering a comfortable ride for the user.

Safety features:

The 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid has more than 10 airbags throughout the car including front, side, side curtain and knee airbags. The rear-view mirror also provides excellent visibility and brightness. Toyota also offers an option to add the blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, which notifies the driver if there is a vehicle in their blind spot when changing lanes or backing up.

In government crash testing, the 2014 Camry Hybrid has received an overall score of five stars for its safety features. You can definitely trust the Camry Hybrid to keep you and your passengers safe from any unexpected encounters on the road.
