The 2014 Subaru Legacy has lost a lot of its cartoon-ish features and has become more sedate and stylish. This mid-size sedan is a great choice for anyone looking for great quality at a great price. The Subaru Legacy has a unique position in its class because it is one of very few mid-sized sedans under $30,000. That price combined with its mild looks and manners make for a car that can work well for anyone.

The 2014 Subaru Legacy gives you the option of two engines. The base engine is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine which puts out up to 173-horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. It’s definitely not going to wow you with its power, but it gets the job done, and that’s what matters. If you crave more power, you can upgrade to the 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine which will give you 256-horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Both engines have a Continuously Variable Transmission and are available in a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic.

As for fuel efficiency ratings, the 2014 Legacy is fairly average in comparison to other sedans in its class. The 2.5-litre engine will give you 11.2L/100km city driving and 8.11L/100km  while the 3.6-litre engine will give you a measly 13.07L/100km city driving and 9.41L/100km on the highway. The 3.6-litre engine is definitely thirstier than most sedans on the market.

On the inside of the 2014 Subaru Legacy, you’ll notice that the seats are extremely comfortable. You get a 10-way adjustable power driver seat which allows you to make your position as customized to your needs as possible. Where the Legacy really shines is in the back. The high roofline allows for extremely easy entry and exit from the back seat where you’ll find plenty of room to fit even the tallest passengers. Leg and headroom are ample, offering a comfortable ride for any passenger. Compared to the Ford Fusion, the Subaru Legacy offers much more head and legroom for backseat passengers. The seats are wide and firm, even the middle seat gets decent comfort.

In the back of the 2014 Legacy you’ll find a decent amount of cargo space. Subaru has installed hidden hinges in the trunk which do not impact the cargo area, allowing for more units to be stored in the trunk. Inside the Legacy you have the option of leather, heated seats which are perforated for ventilation. The doors have some plastic touches however the imitation-wood trim makes it look less cheap than it really should look. Even on the dashboard, the material does a great job of imitating soft-touch materials even though its actually plastic. A definite bonus in a car under $30,000.

The 2014 Subaru Legacy does come with an LCD screen which you can choose to upgrade to navigation. The system is intuitive and simply, however the icons are a bit small and can be a little bit difficult to maneuver through while driving. The temperature controls line the outside of the LCD screen and are clear and easy to read.

Overall the 2014 Subaru Legacy is one of the very few mid-size sedans available under $30,000. For the price, you’re really getting good quality at a great value.

Power and Performance:

It's not meant as a performance sedan, but the 2014 Subaru Legacy can almost be viewed as a sport sedan in plainclothes. Excellent (and standard) all-wheel-drive grip, responsive handling, and the low center of gravity that comes from its horizontally-opposed "boxer" flat-four or flat-six engines add up to a driving experience that's far more engaging than the average Camry, Accord, or Sonata.

There are just two engines offered in the Legacy. The base engine is a new 173-horsepower four that's been designed for better drivability and more response across a wider range of engine speeds. It comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox--itself unusual for a mid-size sedan, and a feature that adds to the sportiness--but the four is best matched to the new Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). We find Subaru's CVT to be one of the best of the breed, without the engine surging and noise that make others so hard to live with.

Gas mileage for this combination is a commendable 9.8L/110km city, 7.35L/100km highway, good for an all-wheel drive mid-size sedan. Opting for the six-speed manual adds athleticism and fun, but hurts efficiency, with a lower 9.8L/100km combined rating.

The second engine, in models designated 3.6R, is 3.6-liter flat six that's been carried over unchanged for several years now. It produces 256 hp, and the only transmission option is a five-speed automatic. Six-cylinder Legacy models are refined and smooth, but not as fast as other mid-size sedans with V-6 engines--and you'll pay at the pump, with a low EPA rating of just 11.76L/100km combined.

Subarus have always handled well, and the Legacy sits closer to the pavement than the high-riding Outback wagon. Cornering is flat, roadholding is tenacious, and the steering is nicely weighted, responsive and precise. Suspension, which was retuned last year, is on the firm side but delivers a good ride with little cabin noise.

The four is definitely a better balanced and lighter, more lithe car than the six, if not quite as quick. The six-cylinder models feel nose-heavy in tighter corners. The retuned suspension smooths the ride on broken or uneven road surfaces, and Subaru says body roll has been cut by up to 40 percent around turns.

Interiors and Special Features:

The spacious interior in the 2014 Subaru Legacy is elegant in both its design and function. The front seats are superbly comfortable and, on all but the base model, include one of the best driver-seat lumbar supports we've tested. Legroom and headroom are excellent front and rear, and split-folding rear seats expand the cargo space from large to huge. The thick tilt/telescoping steering wheel includes controls for audio and cruise, as well as Bluetooth. Gauges are stylish, legible and include a trip computer and fuel-economy gauge; Limited trims have an electroluminescent cluster with a proper temperature gauge.

Features on the 2014 Legacy 2.5i sedan include all-wheel drive, a 6-speed manual transmission, 16-inch wheels, USB/iPod control and Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming. A 6-cylinder 3.6R version is similar, though with a 5-speed automatic and 17-inch alloy wheels. The 2.5i Premium models include the CVT transmission, All-Weather Package (heated front seats, heated side mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer), a 10-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and an audio system with 4.3-inch touch screen, six speakers and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. The 2.5i and 3.6R Limited trims add a power passenger seat, dual-zone climate control, leather seats, a 440-watt harman/kardon premium sound system, rear A/C vents and an electroluminescent gauge cluster with 3.5-inch LCD information display.

The Subaru Legacy options are clustered according to trim levels. The base 2.5i offers only the CVT automatic, while the Premium trim can be equipped with the 440-watt harman/kardon audio system, a power moonroof and rearview camera package that's compatible with the audio system's display screen. Limited trims offer voice-activated navigation with rearview camera and a power moonroof. Both Limited and Premium trims are available with the EyeSight driver-assist system. Subaru dealers also offer a relatively wide array of accessories including an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a remote starter, all-weather floor mats, puddle lights and a roof rack system with numerous attachment options.

Safety features:

The 2014 Subaru Legacy comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags and side curtain airbags.

Subaru's optional EyeSight system bundles adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning and sway warning. The EyeSight system uses two cameras mounted inside the upper edge of the windshield, which Subaru says reduces the potential for damage compared with conventional radar systems mounted in the front bumper. EyeSight can also detect pedestrians and is capable of braking the Legacy if the driver takes no evasive action.

In Edmunds testing, the Legacy 3.6R stopped from 60 mph in 123 feet, which is average for the midsize sedan class.

The Legacy received the best possible five-star crash test ratings in frontal, side and rollover tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's testing, the Subaru received the highest Top Safety Pick+ accolade after earning a "Good" rating (the highest possible) in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset crash test, as well as the side-impact and roof-strength tests. It also earned an "Acceptable" rating (second highest) in the new small-overlap frontal-offset crash test.
