Full Review

The 2014 SLS AMG Black Series is Mercedes’ top-of-the-line supercar. It made its debut in January 2010 and will end its run with the 2015 model. The SLS has a few similarities to the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300GL Gullwing from the 1950s. This car is truly a piece of art in terms of both power and design, and it has exclusive features that make this roadster worth its $200K plus price tag. It is a sports car through and through, and will have any driver smiling from ear to ear at the roar of the V8 engine.

The exterior design of the SLS Black Series is truly a work of art. The long carbon fibre hood, which is exclusive to the Black Series, is deeply sculpted and sits atop the long, aggressive front nose. The drop-down grille highlights the more retro look of the classic sport car with large front air intakes. The roadster sports black matte forged alloy wheels and a front splitter and rear diffuser. The bubble-like body sits just in front of the rear wheels, giving it a true sports car look. The most notable detail on the exterior of this car is that the gullwing doors open vertically. The look of this car is a thing of beauty that will turn heads wherever it goes.

The interior of the SLS Black Series does not disappoint either. The sports car has a great blend of classic and sporty elements that make this vehicle a pleasure to drive. The controls are user friendly and well laid out in the cabin. Cabin space is respectable for this kind of car, but cargo space is lacking. The wide trunk opening will, however, allow you to haul a set of clubs or a few weekend bags along. The contoured power adjustable AMG sports seats have three-position memory and three-stage heating functions. The carbon fibre trims on the Black Series with a red seatbelt and stitching accents really highlight the sporty look of the interior. The cabin is well-crafted, with a logical layout. While you are in the supercar, you never forget that you are in a Mercedes — which is a good thing.

The $200,000 plus price tag attached to this car buys you a lot in terms of refinement, amenities, power and luxury. But what that premium is also buying you is a sense of exclusivity. Owning an SLS, especially the Black Series, already makes you one of very few with limited production, and it will only become more difficult to get your hands on one. The last production year will be 2015, and Mercedes will only be sending out 350 units to its dealerships. Another very exclusive and fun feature is the gullwing doors. This feature is exclusive to the SLS and when the doors are fully extended, this car has a statuesque look. The only problem is that the doors require a lot of space when fully opened and a large range of motion for the operator, as the handle is low when closed and really high when opened.

Powering the SLS AMG Black Series is a souped-up 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 622 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque. The roadster comes standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. The SLS features aluminum shift paddles on the steering wheel and a choice of several shift programs intended to work well on both the track and the road. The Black Series is 154 pounds lighter than the regular SLS, due partly to its carbon fibre details, and blasts from 0-97 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series sits proud among tough competition. This car embraces the raw details of a sports car, while offering the luxuries only found in a Mercedes.

Interiors and Special Features:

The SLS AMG GT coupe's gullwing-style doors swing skyward to reveal a seemingly generous entrance, but the wide door sill can be tricky to navigate, and closing the door once you're seated may require an uncomfortable vertical stretch. The roadster features conventionally hinged doors that are considerably easier to deal with, though also considerably less cool.

The interior is thick with stitched leather panels, while the other cabin materials are of similarly lofty provenance. Perceived build quality is beyond reproach. Much of the SLS's switchgear is familiar from other Mercedes products, and the general dashboard layout recalls both the SLK-Class and SL-Class roadsters. That's a good thing, as we wish more supercars were this user-friendly inside.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, side airbags, side curtain airbags (the roadster substitutes these with taller side airbags), knee airbags and a blind-spot monitoring system. Also standard is Mercedes-Benz's "mbrace" emergency telematics system, which includes automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle location assistance, alarm notification, remote lock/unlock and a variety of other app-based services.
