Quick Look

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 may be on the lower end as far the CLS-Class is concerned, but it still offers more than the majority of luxury vehicles out there, including the Jaguar XJ8 and Audi A7. This sedan manages to stick to tradition and move things forward, keeping things stylish and adding efficiency to stay with the times.

Full Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 may not be the most powerful vehicle in the CLS-Class, but it still packs a punch. First and foremost, its engine is both powerful and efficient. However, that’s not all since this luxury sedan is also quite a beauty – possibly even more so than its competitors, like the Jaguar XJ8 and Audi A7. The biggest reason for that is the design that manages to stick to Mercedes’ well-established roots and move things forward at the same time. In other words, the CLS550 justifies its $85,000 price tag admirably.

In terms of external appearance, the 2014 CLS550 sports a distinctly coupe-like body thanks to its longer hood and shorter overhangs, despite being a sedan at heart. Thanks to Mercedes’ signature roofline and sculpted greenhouse, the car manages to have a flowing profile that exudes elegance from every angle. However, unlike Mercedes' other sedans, the CLS550 has a more harder-edged personality, showcasing a sporty edge. It comes with a larger, more intimidating big-star grille, with optional full-LED headlights on each side.  Overall, the new CLS550 is one of Mercedes’ most aggressive vehicles than you'll find on an E- or S-Class.

Inside, the new Mercedes-Benz CLS550 offers all the luxury and technology one would expect at this price. High levels of detail can be found in the dash design, the complex stitching on the seats and door panels, as well as the extravagant wood trim colours and textures. The CLS550's cockpit is defined by near-perfect ergonomics and solid handling. Front seats are highly bolstered and designed for both intense driving and long-distance trips. However, you won’t find the same comfort in the back seat area, where both headroom and legroom are sadly in short supply.

Under the hood, the new Mercedes-Benz CLS550 comes with a 4.7-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which can produce 402 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. In general, power delivery is smooth and strong, complemented quick, seamless shifts. It's always fun to have that much power at one's disposal. The fuel economy on this car isn’t the best, but the rear-wheel-drive version is rated at 15.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, which is a marked improvement over the previous version. If you want a more powerful engine, then you might want to check out the CLS63 model.

Overall, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 is an excellent car in just about every aspect. It’s quick, powerful and nimble, with plenty of style and comfort complementing all that. Should you buy this car? If you have close $90,000 lying around, then yes. If not, then you can definitely try it out, but you won’t be able to afford it.

Power and Performance:

The starting point for the CLS range is the rear-drive CLS 550, powered by a 4.6-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine rated at 402 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Despite the CLS 550's  size, it accelerates to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. All-wheel drive adds a tenth of a second to that figure.

Whether you choose all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, you'll get a seven-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly and quickly in standard automatic mode. Comfort and Sport modes soften or sharpen the CLS's character accordingly--and noticeable.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS offers all the lavishness and technology one would expect at this price point. Elevated levels of detail can be found in the dash design, the intricate stitching on the seats and door panels, and the unique wood trim colors and textures. The CLS' cockpit is defined by near-perfect ergonomics and a solid, tactile feel. Seats are highly bolstered and designed for both spirited driving and long-distance cruising. However, don't look for matching comfort in the rear seat area, where both headroom and legroom are in short supply.

Safety features:

Every 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class features standard four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front knee airbags, front side airbags (both torso and pelvic), full-length curtain airbags and the Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 telematics system (smartphone integration and Web-based apps that include remote controls, driver monitoring and emergency services). Also standard is Attention Assist (a driver drowsiness and alerting monitor) and PreSafe (it anticipates an imminent crash and automatically takes measures to better secure occupants).

Options include rear side airbags, infrared night-view sensors and rearview parking sensors. The Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot and lane-departure systems; the active version of this package takes action should you fail to heed those warnings. A rearview camera is also optional.
