While it’s been a very practical and safe companion to our family, the 2014 Mercedes B250 has a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that has also been a source of constant joy. At any moment, especially when the kids and wife are no longer onboard, this family-friendly over-grown hatchback turns into a nimble hot hatch willing you on to tackle the next bend at speed. There are some compromises, of course. Its performance credentials make it a harder ride than it probably could be (not helped by the low-profile tyres) and it’s certainly less suited to poorly-surfaced country roads, where it jiggles about too much.

On the plus side it’s not floaty. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is quick in Sport mode and focused on efficiency in economy mode. We averaged around 7.8L/100km and could get it down to 6.1L/100km if saving fuel was a priority. Much better than the fuel efficiency ratings then some competitors in the same compact class.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B250 is where traditional Mercedes enthusiasts will notice a change of seismic proportions – the new German compact king is all modern…but in the traditional ‘Benz way. Most noticeable and the three stylish, large circular air-vents on the centre console (positioned to maximize efficiency) and the dashboard itself is a totally new three-dimensional design available in a choice of three variants. Above the vents is the colour 14.7cm TFT screen (six-disc, six-speaker audio system) and everything is trimmed in a stylish combination of metallic, black-ash wood trim and piano black. Four analogue instruments are housed in a curved binnacle while the three-spoke steering wheel (height/reach adjustable) and supportive seats in Artico leather with contrasting stitching add a sporty touch. And here’s where the design-smarts of Mercedes-Benz come into play – the overall picture inside the 2014 B250 is dominated by abundant space.

Even with the rear seat in-place, the B250 provides a very impressive 488-litres of luggage space (the seat split-folds 60/40 for load-carrying versatility). And those in the back will be surprised by the amount of legroom this so-called small car provides. A tad surprising for a Mercedes-Benz, the 2014 B250 does not come standard with the safety of a reversing camera - it’s an additional option that will cost you extra. Satellite navigation (the usual excellent ‘Benz system) is also an additional option and brings with it a larger 17.8cm colour screen.

Safety features:

On numerous occasions the blind spot detection system in the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B250 has warned us of a motorbike casually cruising in the no-go zone and on one occasion the audible warning from the Benz’s front-collision detection system saved us from a potential minor rear-ending. Which if you think about it, paid for itself instantly.

During our test period we had an inattentive driver hit the back of the B250 while it was stationary at a red light. The Mercedes-Benz looked like someone might have hit it with a trolley while the offending car had extensive damage.

Speaking of safety, the 2014 B250’s lane departure monitoring system is also one of the best in the business and if you have a habit of being distracted by audio systems, it’s a lifesaver for making sure you’re aware of your lane position, unobtrusively, before it’s too late.
