The 2014 Lexus CT 200h is the only luxury hatchback in North America. It’s also the smallest and most affordable Lexus around, offering excellent fuel economy and slick exterior design. Its power output is admittedly on the lower side, but it makes up for that with green-friendly features like simulated leather, bamboo speaker frames and more.

The 2014 Lexus CT 200h is the smallest and most affordable car the manufacturer has in its lineup. It’s also Lexus’ only hatchback, which makes it unique to the North American market since it’s the only luxury hatchback available around these parts. And surprisingly, it’s doing quite well in terms of sales – though not quite as well as Lexus’ other non-sedan vehicle, the RX crossover.

When it comes to appearance, the 2014 CT 200h is nothing like the Lexus sedans, being a hatchback to its very core. Under the hood, it may be exactly like Toyota’s Prius, but on the outside, it’s much classier and clearly more expensive, offering LED headlights, protruding wheel arches, steeply slopped roofline and a spindle grille. If you hate the way hatchbacks look, you might change your mind with this one – which is a testament to its looks. That said, its 17-inch tires and wheels are a little small for its otherwise perfect appearance. Still, it’s likely to make you overlook other high-quality hatchbacks, like Mazda3, BMW 1-Series and Volkswagen GTI.

On the inside, the Lexus CT 200h is snug yet detailed, providing plenty of comfort and special features. The front seats are especially cosy thanks to their lateral support and adjustability. The gauges are well-lit and look as slick as ever, with an eight-inch LCD multifunction display complementing them perfectly. And if you hate the use of leather in cars or otherwise, you’ll be happy to learn that the 2014 CT 200h comes with simulated leather, which happens to be 60 per cent lighter than the real thing. You also get bamboo speaker frames and 30-per-cent plant-based materials in floor mats and other parts of the cabin.

The 2014 CT 200h offers the same hybrid engine as the Prius, which is 98-horsepower 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder that runs in tandem with an 80-horsepower electric motor. The power output is most definitely on the lower side, but the fuel economy you get here is enormous. Its EPA ratings are 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. It takes this Lexus about 10 seconds to accelerate to 100 kilometres per hour, which is rather disappointing since it’s expected to compete with the BMWs and Audis. Still, if you’re looking for fuel economy, you’ll bucket loads of it here.

Overall, the 2014 Lexus CT 200h is an excellent car – but only as long as you ignore the very noticeable lack of power. However, if you’re looking for an environmentally-friendly hatchback with a bit of class, then the CT 200h is perfect for you.

Power and Performance:

By employing the Prius' renowned 98-hp 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine and 80-hp electric-drive motor, the Lexus CT 200h runs way ahead of the pack on fuel economy – 43 mpg in the EPA city cycle is eye-opening. But the 10-second 0-60-mph acceleration performance that feels so socially responsible in a Prius is a bit of a letdown in a sporty luxury-brand car that looks like it should run with Audis and BMWs.

Interiors and Special Features:

If you were expecting the passenger cabin of the 2014 Lexus CT 200h to be done up in the same lavish soft leather and gleaming wood found in the luxury brand's other models, well, you'll be disappointed. That said, the interior does have a classy look and the soft-touch materials -- even the standard premium vinyl upholstery -- are entirely suitable for this class of car.

Generally speaking, gauges and controls are easy to see and operate. When you opt for the Display Audio or Navigation package, you get the Lexus Remote Touch system, a mouselike device that controls a cursor on a large centrally located screen. Although interacting with this interface is very similar to using a computer mouse, the ultra-sensitive nature of the controller can make it clumsy and distracting to use while driving.

The front seats are well bolstered and supportive. Despite the cabin's sloping roof line, there's plenty of head- and legroom for rear seat passengers, although small rear doors hamper ingress and egress. Storage space for small everyday items is limited to a smallish glovebox and front door map pockets. Behind its rear seats, the CT 200h has 14.3 cubic feet of luggage space, which is small by normal hatchback standards.

Safety features:

The 2014 Lexus CT 200h does well on safety, with a comprehensive list of active and passive safety features, and the highest scores in crash testing. The standard safety features includes stability control, anti-lock brakes, Brake Assist, and eight standard airbags (including knee bags for both front occupants). A pre-collision safety system is an option

The latest year of CT is no longer deemed a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), as it was for several years now, because it hasn't been tested on the new and tougher Small Overlap Front Crash test. It earns the IIHS's top rating of "Good" in all categories--Moderate-Overlap Front Crash, Side, Roof Strength, and Head Restraints & Seats.

On the other hand, the Lexus CT has never been rated for crash safety by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), so the IIHS ratings are the only ones we have to go on.

The CT offers a good view out the front, even for shorter drivers. To our surprise, rearward vision was good despite both thick roof pillars and the very shallow, almost slit-like rear window in the tailgate.
