Full Review

If you’re looking for a fast car, then the 2014 Honda CR-V is most definitely not for you. However, if your goal is to drive a fuel-efficient, spacious and feature-packed compact SUV, then you should at least give it a look.

Design-wise, the biggest improvement – or otherwise – is that the car looks bigger now, despite being roughly the same size as the older models. Benefitting from a much sharper, more aerodynamic appearance, which it owes to its stylish back and front fascia treatments along with arrowhead-like back windows, the 2014 CR-V also boasts a greater sense of ruggedness. Add to that a steeply leaning windshield and a low, sporty roofline, which effortlessly matches the “smiling” grille and “squinting” headlights, and you get one stylish vehicle. All the base LX variants come with 16-inch steel wheels, while the higher EX and EX-L models feature 17-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin of the new Honda CR-V features a visible level of sophistication and style, which is more or less an extension of its similarly on-point exterior design. Some of the stand-out features include an elegantly-styled dash, hefty gauges and sexy switchgear. But, Honda wasn’t just concerned with the way the cabin looks – but also with the way it feels.

The front seats are particularly comfortable, offering plenty of support and adjustability, while being separated by a very convenient centre console with two cup holders. There’s also a big centre stow bin, inside which you’ll find USB and auxiliary inputs along with a 12-volt power point. The rear seats are comfortable too, providing an ample amount of legroom. Speaking of rear seats, you can easily fold them down flat to expand the car’s 37.2-cubic-foot cargo area to 70.9 cubic feet. Not bad for a smaller-sized SUV. Not bad at all.

As for the powertrain, you get only one – a 2.4-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder, which can generate 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. This puppy is combined with a five-speed automatic transmission, an energy-saving multistage alternator for mileage boosts and Honda’s Eco Assist system with the “ECON” button on the dash, which improves throttle mapping along with the air conditioning and cruise control functions. It’s not the fastest engine, but it is definitely efficient, carrying EPA ratings of 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway with front-wheel drive and 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway with all-wheel drive.

So, is the 2014 Honda CR-V worth its $25,990 price mark? Thanks to a plethora of special features, a comfortable cabin and one fuel-efficient engine, it certainly is. So, if you’ve already taken a look at compact SUVs like the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sorento or even the Nissan Rogue, then you should definitely check this one out.
