The 2014 Honda Accord Coupe is the kind of vehicle that manages to deliver superb quality in nearly every area: power and performance, exterior and interior design, comfort and so on. Its safety standards are particularly impressive, having achieved top results in most tests and carrying a host of safety features to choose from.



The 2014 Honda Accord Coupe is a two-door midsize vehicle that carries most of its features over from the last year’s model – just like its bigger sedan brother. This lack of change is not necessarily a bad thing, however, since the last year’s model has introduced a more sophisticated design, with more elegance, comfort and practicality than ever. In fact, the new Accord Coupe is so good that it puts up a very stiff competition to the likes of the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and Mazda 6.

The improvements in the Honda Accord’s design are apparent as soon as you look at it – since its body features more curves and fine details than any of the pre-2013 models. First and foremost, the coupe is smaller now – by almost three inches – which is both a blessing and a curse. The good news is that the smaller size benefits its appearance. The bad news is that it fits less stuff in it. The exterior body’s look also benefits greatly from its classy grille that features smooth horizontal bars and Honda’s logo right in the middle (where else would they put it?).

The Accord also comes with a lower beltline in the corners of the side windows. And if you’re interested in a higher trim model – this one gets neat additions like LED brake lights and daytime running lights.

Once you take a step inside, you’ll find that the cabin is both lavish and up-to-date. It features a relatively low instrument panel that sits as far back from the driver as possible to provide more space, while all the controls are placed high and within reach. The quality of materials and the amount of special features steadily increases as you go up the trim ladder, with the EX-L model getting a touchscreen audio system, which isn’t as convenient as it could be due to a cluttered interface, but still decent enough to be useful.

Some of the standout features are leather upholstery, a memory driver’s seat, heated seats, Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning as well as a HondaLink system, with Aha streaming entertainment on board. All of these are available on the highest trim. The base features involve dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera and the aforementioned eight-inch i-MID display with Pandora audio steaming and SMS text-messaging abilities.

On the powertrain side of things, the Honda Accord Coupe offers two engines and three transmissions. The base engine is the 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 185 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, which are very good numbers good number for a coupe. The optional 3.5-litre V-6 can pump out even more – 278 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are great and offer quite a bit of power for the money they are worth, but the V-6 is definitely the more powerful engine. However, with more power, you also get less fuel economy, so remember that if you decide to settle for the V-6.

We would also like to mention the fact that the Accord Coupe is an incredibly safe car. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named it its Top Safety Pick+ since it has received “good” scores in frontal, side and rear impact tests. All the models come with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist, stability control and hill start assist. The side airbags also benefit from the new SmartVent technology, which replaces those annoying occupant-position detection devices.

Overall, the 2014 Honda Accord Coupe is a masterfully made vehicle that doesn’t disappoint in any of its aspects and delivers in all the areas that matter. So, if you’re looking for a quality coup, then the Accord is most definitely worth a look.

Power and Performance:

Two engines and three new transmissions are offered in gasoline-powered versions of the 2014 Honda Accord. The base is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that makes a healthy 185 horsepower (189 in Sport versions). The optional engine is a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 278 horsepower. In the sedan, 4-cylinder engines are linked to a 6-speed manual transmission or CVT automatic, and V6 engines are connected to a 6-speed auto. In the coupe, the V6 can be connected to a satisfying 6-speed manual. The Accord Plug-In uses a 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a 124-kilowatt electric motor. The lithium-ion battery recharges in less than three hours on a standard 120-volt outlet or under an hour on a 240-volt outlet. Electric-only range is rated at 13 miles, and total range when factoring in the gasoline engine is 574 miles.

Interiors and Special Features:

With a few exceptions, the materials in the 2014 Honda Accord have a high-quality look and feel. The overall cockpit design is elegant, and the cabin's tight construction gives the impression of an entry-level luxury car, rather than a workaday family car. The dash design embraces the spirit of legibility with an effective three-tier layout. At the top is the crisp-looking 8-inch display that offers varying levels of information and, depending on the trim level, audio and navigation interfaces. Meanwhile, the main instrument displays provide enough information without being cluttered and overwhelming.

Both front and rear occupants will find plenty of legroom and shoulder room -- the sedan's backseat is arguably best in class with its combination of space and comfort. Road and tire noise, which in previous generations of the Accord could be rather annoying -- are noticeably reduced now thanks in part to two active noise-cancellation systems. We're also fond of the clear outward visibility afforded by the Accord's design, which provides a fairly low beltline, relatively slim roof pillars and a generous amount of glass, all traits that are increasingly rare in modern automobiles. As a downside, though, we've found the Accord's front seats less comfortable on long drives than others in this segment.

At 15.8 cubic feet, the Accord sedan's trunk is about average, whereas the coupe's, at 13.4 cubic feet, is generous for a midsize coupe. Though it lacks a split feature, the one-piece rear seatback does fold down to increase the cargo capacity.

Safety features:

The Accord comes with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and six airbags (front, front-side, full-length side curtain). Other available safety features include collision warning and lane departure warning systems.

In government crash tests, the latest Accord earned a 5-star overall safety rating. That rating consists of a 5-star side impact rating, a 5-star rollover rating and a 4-star frontal impact rating.
