The 2014 GMC Terrain does not come with many changes, but it still manages to offer excellent safety capabilities, ruggedly attractive exterior design and above-average fuel economy. The crossover also comes with the phenomenal 3.6-litre V6 engine, which can produce 301 horsepower and endows the car with truck-like capabilities.

The 2014 GMC Terrain is nearly identical to the last year’s model, offering many of the same benefits, which include decent fuel economy, aggressive appearance and above-average safety equipment. The closest relative to this crossover is Chevrolet Equinox since they look very similar and seem to be in the same price range. The Terrain is worth $28,295, while the Equinox costs $26,375. So, yes, the latter is less expensive, but we would argue that GMC has offers a better value for your money.

In fact, one way of looking the 2014 Terrain is as the more aggressive and truck-like version of the Equinox. What makes it a touch cooler than Chevrolet’s product is the fact that most crossovers are far too curvy these days, so if you’re looking for an alternative to all that, then here it is. It features a big grille with the GMC logo at the centre and a chunk of chrome above. To the side you’ll find angular wheel openings, which house 19-inch wheels, and above there’s a tough-as-nails roof rack that can keep anything you want tied down. But the best part is that it’s not high off the ground, which makes it easy to get in and out – in spite of the crossover’s decidedly tall appearance.

On the inside, the Terrain shares even more similarities with the Equinox, but it has a more luxurious touch to it, thanks to higher-quality materials, like two-tone leather and satin metal trim, and more special features, like the Colour Touch infotainment system – available in all trims. The Terrain Denali offers an eight-way power passenger seat, French-stitched seams on the upholstery and smoked mahogany trim. But the biggest draw should be the GMC signature instrument panel, which comes with bright red lighting and backlighted control functions. Other great features include the seven-inch touchscreen radio and sound system, which features buttons that look like the icons on your smartphone.

However, while infotainment and similar features are great and all, the main draw for many potential Terrain drivers should be its safety capabilities. Fortunately, this year’s model delivers the goods in spades. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the crossover with four stars out of five, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given it top “good” scores almost all categories. The Terrain hasn’t gone through the small-overlap test, which is why the IIHS has not named it its Top Safety Pick yet – unlike the previous models.

Some of the notable safety features include six airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes and a rearview camera. The Denali model also comes with blind-spot monitors with cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alerts and a lane-departure warning system. Some of the features you can add are rear parking sensors and basic OnStar service that comes with connectivity to the RemoteLink app.

The GMC Terrain provides a selection of two quality engines – either a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, which can produce 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, or a 3.6-litre V6 that can pump out 301 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. Both of them are available with direct fuel injection and can be combined with six-speed automatic transmissions. If you’re just looking to drive from point A to point B, the 2.4-litre engine should do fine. However, if you’re planning to load it up with heavy items and use it for towing, then we recommend the 3.6-litre engine. In terms of fuel economy, both of them are fine choices, the 2.4-litre option offers more. Its EPA ratings are 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway – if you’re in the front-wheel-drive model. The E83 all-wheel-drive models have the worst fuel economy no matter what engine you choose, so be aware of that.

Overall, the 2014 GMC Terrain is an impressive package that should make a fine alternative to crossovers like Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and of course the Equinox. So, if you’re in the market for a car like that, definitely give this one a try.

Power and Performance:

The standard engine for every 2014 GMC Terrain is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Optional for any Terrain except the SLE-1 is a 3.6-liter V6 that churns out a hefty 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional, regardless of engine choice or trim level.

The four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive Terrain returns an EPA-estimated 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, those numbers drop to 20/29/23. The 3.6-liter V6 front-wheel-drive models are rated at 17/24/20, and all-wheel drive stands at 16/23/19.

In Edmunds testing, a front-wheel-drive four-cylinder Terrain went from zero to 60 mph in 9.4 seconds, an average time for the class. A V6-equipped, all-wheel-drive Denali version sprinted from zero to 60 in 7.0 seconds, an impressive time among small and midsize crossovers with a six-cylinder or upgraded turbocharged engine.

With the four-cylinder engine, a properly equipped Terrain can tow 1,500 pounds; the V6 increases towing capacity to 3,500 pounds.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Terrain shares a lot with its GM sibling, the Chevrolet Equinox, but comes across as more upscale, with higher-quality materials and a snazzier, more luxurious look that includes satin metal trim and 2-tone leather. Going further, the Terrain Denali includes an 8-way power passenger seat, smoked mahogany trim and French-stitched seams on the upholstery. More details show in the GMC signature instrument panel, with glowing red lighting and backlighting for the control functions – even the USB port is made easier to find at night, thanks to a lighted surround. Another nice touch is a touch-screen radio and sound system that includes icons similar to those on smartphones in order to operate the various functions.

Safety features:

Standard safety comes from six airbags, OnStar emergency telematics, ABS, stability control and traction control. To elevate occupant protection, GMC also offers optional lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert systems, part of the Safety Package available on the SLE-2 and SLT-1 and standard on the SLT-2 and Denali. The Denali also includes a standard blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Terrain received four overall stars in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash testing. It earned five stars in NHTSA's side-impact test but received four stars in frontal and rollover assessments.
