Quick Look

The 2014 GMC Sierra 3500HD is a fantastic pickup truck in more ways than one, offering aggressive body design, a reasonably spacious cabin and a decent selection of engines. The 6.6-litre turbocharged diesel V8 can produce 397 horsepower and 785 pound-feet for those craving extra power. Overall, however, the alternatives from Ford and Dodge do everything a bit better.

Full Review

Like any pickup truck out there, the 2014 GMC Sierra 3500HD is not here to impress anyone with its beauty. Instead, it’s here to impress all with it usability, and out of all the Sierra trucks, this version is arguably the most useful one, offering plenty of cargo room, comfortable cabin and more power than you will ever need. It’s an expensive car that’s not intended for your average-joe type of worker – who is unlikely to afford such a massive purchase. So, the question is – does the price justify what this vehicle offers? Well, let’s find out, shall we?

Just like its less pricy cousin – the Sierra 2500HD – the 3500HD carries with it a hefty three-bar chrome grille along with a set of weighty headlights that have become almost iconic in the last few years. However, neither of those features are meant to be pleasing on the aesthetic level – their purpose is to deliver function above all else. The same applies to the truck’s dome-like hood, the shape of which is meant to allow better engine cooling; the louvers are there to serve the exact same purpose. And let’s not forget the higher-end Denali trim, which brings with it colour-coded bumpers and a four-bar grille with chrome mesh inserts and mimicking lower grille. Another notable feature of this truck’s exterior design is the height from the ground to the top of the cargo bed floor, since the half-ton version is five inches taller in this area than the 0.8-ton version.

On the inside, the 2014 Sierra 3500HD feels almost like a luxury vehicle, despite the fact that it’s supposed to value function over style. This is not a problem of course since having quality materials as well as fit and finish never hurts. The real issue here is the lack of various storage bins and compartments that you might otherwise find in trucks from Ram and Ford. You can still find a few storage areas for your laptop and tool, but don’t expect to have the same level of convenience as you might have in other pickups. And while WT, SLE and SLT trim interiors are already quite fancy, there’s more luxury to be found in the top Denali trim, which comes with leather upholstery, brushed-aluminum trim and soft-touch materials on the dash.

In terms of comfort, the front seats offer enough to make most drivers comfortable. However, some might find the driving position to be slightly awkward due to the tilt-only steering wheel. The button placement in the higher trims is hit-and-miss too since they can be a bit difficult to operate. If you get the crew cab version, you’ll find a fold-up back seat that can accommodate taller passengers – but not as well as the trucks from Ford or Ram (sadly).

Under the hood, the new GMC Sierra 3500HD is nothing special either, offering a selection of fairly standard engines. The base one is a 6.0-litre Vortec V8, which can produce 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. If you require more power, however, you can pick the 6.6-litre turbocharged diesel V8, which will give you 397 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque. It’s also compatible with B20 biodiesel, relying on what is called a Selective Catalyst Reduction after-treatment system, which relies on urea-based cleaning agent known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

So, is the 2014 GMC Sierra 3500HD worth the cost of $38,910? For the most part, yes. However, if you’re looking for a bigger cabin and more comfort, then we recommend checking out the Ford Super Duty F-350 and Dodge Ram 3500 first.

Power and Performance:

The standard power plant for the 2014 GMC Sierra 3500HD is a 6.0-liter gasoline V8 engine that produces 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is the only available transmission.

An optional turbocharged 6.6-liter diesel V8 is the engine of choice for those who plan on towing or hauling on a regular basis. It produces 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a beefier six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. In Edmunds performance testing, a 3500HD Sierra Denali with the diesel-powered engine and standard rear axle went from zero to 60 mph in a swift 7.5 seconds.

Rear-wheel drive is standard for all models, with four-wheel drive optional.

Properly equipped, a 2014 GMC Sierra 3500HD can haul up to 7,222 pounds of payload. It can tow up to 18,000 pounds with its standard ball hitch and pull 23,100 pounds with a fifth-wheel connection.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 GMC Sierra HD Work Truck (WT), SLE and SLT interiors are designed to function seamlessly with a wide range of conventional truck duties. But despite the cabin's utilitarian intent, most trims come nicely appointed with adequate materials' quality and fit and finish. While it lacks the bounty of storage bins and compartments found in the Ram and Ford HD trucks, the 2014 GMC Sierra HD nevertheless has a number of useful storage ideas for everything from laptops to the errant tool. On the luxury front, Denali variants feature a distinctive brushed-aluminum trim, leather upholstery and soft-touch materials on the upper dash.

Safety features:

Every GMC Sierra HD features anti-lock brakes, front airbags, StabiliTrak electronic traction and stability control, OnStar Crash Response and Crisis Assist and a tire-pressure monitor.

In the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's tests of the Sierra HD, the truck performs as well as most, with an average overall score. Trucks without optional side airbags earned much lower ratings than trucks with airbags, with Crew Cab models scoring slightly better than Regular and Extended Cabs. The Sierra HD also earned scores from three to four out of five stars in the roof rollover test, depending on body style and cab configuration.
