Quick Look

The 2014 GMC Savana Passenger is a perfect passenger vehicle that offers a great selection of powertrains and tons of space. Its only downside is that it’s bland when it comes to appearance, but that’s a curse that affects the majority of vans out there, so it’s not such a big deal in this case.

Full Review

The 2014 GMC Savana Passenger is a traditional full-size van that’s perfect for small companies or large families. This vehicle can transport from eight to 15 passengers or tow up to 10,000 pounds – though these numbers may vary, depending on which style you pick. If you’re not sure whether this van is for you, be aware that it doesn’t have any real competitors with the exception of the 2014 Ford E-Series Wagon. Though the overall structure is the same, the GMCs offer more engine choices (more on that later). Basically, what we’re trying to say that you should at least give this van a try.

On outside, the GMC Savana has the same basic box shape it had for the last 30 years. This is a van that was built with practicality in mind, so this shape is not a bad thing it all – it endows it with versatility and roominess. It does distinguish itself with rounded corners, flush headlights and high taillights. In terms of door configurations you can get sliding or split swing-out passenger-side doors as well as General Motors-exclusive swing-out doors – but only on the driver's side. A roof-mounted ladder rack, roof-rack cross-rail system and mudflaps add a bit of sophistication to the exterior as well.

If you peek inside, you’ll find a highly functional but not exactly pretty cabin. As such, expect plenty of sturdy plastics on the rigid dash and door panels, alongside thick vinyl-covered seats and floor. The instrument panel feature large and user-friendly gauges, as well as easy-to-reach heating controls and radio. If you go for the Cargo Van option, you’ll find that the 2014 GMC Savana can fit only two passengers, while employing the world's largest trunk. The Savana Passenger Van option, on the other hand, comes with bench seating, power windows, rear air conditioning and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity.

Under the hood, the 2014 Savana comes with a selection of five different powertrains. The 1500 series has a 5.3-litre V8 engine that generates 310 horsepower and 334 pound-feet of torque, combined with a four-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive.

Then you have the rear-drive-only 2500 and 3500 series, which come with a 4.8-litre V8 that yields 285 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. There’s also the option to have a 6.0-litre V8 engine that produces 342 horsepower and 373 pound-feet of torque. You can opt of the less powerful CNG-powered 6.0-litre V8 that will give you 282 horsepower and 320 pound-feet. These engines all come combined with a six-speed automatic transmission. Want more? The 3500 series can have a turbocharged 6.6-litre diesel V8 that produces 260 horsepower and 525 pound-feet. The diesel engine is the more fuel-efficient of the bunch, so if that’s your concern, then pick it instead.

Overall, the 2014 GMC Savana Passenger is nothing overly impressive – at least not in the traditional sense. However, its excellent choice of engines and huge amounts of space make it one of the most optimal selections for a van on the market.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 GMC Savana offers no fewer than five different powertrains.

The 1500 series features a 5.3-liter V8 engine making 310 horsepower and 334 pound-feet of torque, backed by a four-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional. The EPA's estimated fuel economy with either drivetrain is 14 mpg combined (13 city/17 highway).

The rear-drive-only 2500 and 3500 series get a standard 4.8-liter V8 with 285 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A 6.0-liter V8 engine generating 342 hp and 373 lb-ft is optional, as is a CNG-powered 6.0-liter V8 that makes 282 hp and 320 lb-ft. All these engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy with the 4.8-liter is 13 mpg combined (11 city/17 highway) in the 2500 and 3500, while the 6.0-liter gas engine earns 13 mpg combined (11/16) in the 2500 and 12 mpg combined (11/16) in the 3500.

The 3500 series additionally offers an optional turbocharged 6.6-liter diesel V8 (also matched to a six-speed automatic) that puts out 260 hp and 525 lb-ft. The diesel engine is the more fuel-efficient engine of the two big V8s, but mpg estimates are not available because the EPA doesn't rate vehicles that weigh more than 6,000 pounds.

Properly equipped, a Savana 3500 can tow a maximum of 10,000 pounds.

Interiors and Special Features:

As expected, the Savana's interior design stresses function over beauty. Sturdy plastics comprise most of the austere dash and door panels, with thick vinyl covering the seats and floor. Gauges in the instrument panel are large and easy to read, and the heating controls and radio are in reasonable reach for the driver. In Cargo Van form, the 2014 GMC Savana is a 2-passenger vehicle with the world's largest trunk. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Savana Passenger Van that allows for such luxuries as bench seating, power windows, rear air conditioning and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity.

Safety features:

All 2014 GMC Savana passenger vans come fitted with antilock brakes, side curtain airbags and stability control as standard equipment. A rear vision camera, rear parking sensors and OnStar emergency communications are available as options.
