Quick Look

The 2014 Ford Edge is a fantastic alternative to Ford’s Explorer and Escape thanks to its sleek interior design and a wide array of special features. The crossover also offers fantastic fuel economy and plenty of power with its turbocharged four-cylinder engine. So, if you’re not ready for a full-sized SUV, then this vehicle is for you.

Full Review

The 2014 Ford Edge is a midsize crossover that falls comfortably between Ford’s full-size Explorer and compact Escape, offering solid interior design and three very efficient engines. It’s becoming harder and harder for a crossover to stand out in today’s market since there are so many of them, and yet the Ford Edge accomplishes this admirably. So, if you’re not quite in the market for a large family vehicle, but would still like something sizeable, this car may be for you.

In terms of exterior design, the 2014 Edge bears all the hallmarks of a true crossover, meaning that it utilizes soft contours and crisp edges to differentiate itself from the much more rugged appearance of traditional SUVs. Ford basically created the modern crossover look back in 2006, when it released the first-generation Edge. This year’s outing doesn’t look too different from what came before it, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing since this design is still very fresh thanks to a few alterations in 2011.

On the inside, the crossover is just as appealing, featuring a very modern look and feel. The optional MyFord Touch System gives the interior a very sleek and high-tech vibe, which involves a large touchscreen located at the centre of the front panel. There are also two smaller screens in the gauge section, which provide audio options, climate and navigation system information. In other words, there are enough special features to keep you well-informed and entertained.

In terms of size and comfort, the 2014 Edge has very few faults. The seats are incredibly comfortable and supportive both in front and back. In fact, backseats feature reclining seatback cushions, which provide ample legroom and plenty of comfort, but the centre seat is a bit rough – which isn’t all too surprising. The back row in Edges with panoramic sunroofs could also use some extra headroom, but the regular models are fine.

On the powertrain side of things, the 2014 Ford Edge is doing quite well too. It comes with the choice of three engines, two of which are V-6s and one 240-horsepower turbocharged four. The 3.5-litre, 285-horsepower V-6 is the standard option on the SE and SEL models, bringing along a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine’s EPA-estimated fuel economy with front-wheel drive is 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined, while the all-wheel drive models feature the combined rating of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres. These ratings are not at the very top, but they’re definitely a cut above what you’d find in most crossovers.

The turbocharged four-cylinder engine – called EcoBoost – is optionally available for all models except the Sport one. It comes with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is unfortunately not available for this engine. The best part about the EcoBoost is its fuel economy, carrying the combined EPA rating of 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres, which is very impressive.

There’s also the 3.7-litre V-6 that produces 305 horsepower and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. It features the combined fuel economy ratings of 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres and 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres for front-wheel and all-wheel drives respectively. It’s decent, but we’d rather recommend the base engine.

So, if fuel efficiency and slick design are two things that you’re looking for in a crossover, then definitely take the 2014 Ford Edge for a test drive. It won’t knock you off your feet, but it will leave you very satisfied.

The 2014 Ford Edge is a midsize, five-seat family crossover that has originally changed the way crossovers look. Originally, these vehicles were looked at as a smaller alternative to the SUV, but Ford changed that in 2006 by releasing a crossover with softer contours and crisper edges. This year’s model isn’t that much more different from the older ones, but it does bring a fairly refreshing look to the table. The only real change has occurred at the front – where the car features a surprisingly large grille that seems to exist in stark contrast to the car’s otherwise very clean design.

On the inside, things have changed for the better since the last model as the cabin now features soft-touch fabrics and a much more appealing look overall. That said, the mock carbon trim in the SE and SEL models does not quite fit with this design, but that shouldn’t detract from the experience. The Limited models also feature vertical lines of wood grain that give the front panel a classier touch. On top of that, the stack has been redesigned to include an LCD screen and MyFord Touch, along with many other features.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Ford Edge offers the choice of three engines: two V-6s and a turbocharged four.

The base V-6 produces 253 pound-feet of torque and 285 horsepower and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission as well as a choice between all-wheel and front-wheel drives. It offers a decent fuel economy, with the EPA rating of 12.4L/100km city / 8.7L/100km hwy and 13.1L/100km city / 9.4L/100km hwy for front-wheel and all-wheel drives respectively. It’s a decent amount of fuel economy for the amount of power the engine can provide.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, also known as EcoBoost, produces 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, coming with a six-speed automatic transmission. Its fuel economy rating is 11.2L/100km city / 7.8L/100km hwy. Unfortunately, it comes with front-wheel drive only, but that shouldn’t be an issue since this engine already features excellent fuel economy.

Finally, there’s the 3.7-litre V-6, which delivers 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, coming with a six-speed automatic transmission. It has the fuel economy ratings of 12.4L/100km city / 9.0L/100km hwy and 13.8L/100km city / 9.4L/100km hwy for front-wheel and all-wheel drives respectively.  Admittedly, this engine doesn’t seem to offer enough power to justify its somewhat average fuel economy ratings, so the base V-6 may be the better choice in this case.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Ford Edge features the same basic interior design as the 2011 and 2012 models. That said, this latest version comes with softer-touch plastics, sleeker visual appeal and fewer “blocky” details. The SE and SEL models feature mock carbon fiber trim that doesn’t quite match the overall design, but that’s okay – because the car makes up for it with plenty of special features.

The base models include satellite radio, rear parking sensors, power front seats and Bluetooth-enabled system known as SYNC, which allows drivers to regulate audio and smartphone features using their voice. There’s also an SEL Appearance Package, which provides leather seating, 20-inch wheels and body-colour trim for the grille.

The Sport model comes with smoked headlights and taillights, brand-new cladding and fascias, leather seating and aluminum cockpit. In the meantime, the Limited models feature a rearview camera, Sony sound system, HD radio and MyFord Touch – a touchscreen/voice-controlled system.

Safety features:

The 2014 Ford Edge has a very decent set of safety equipment that has earned it high scores from many safety organizations. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the crossover with “good” scores in all main categories, while the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given it four stars overall and three stars for frontal crash test results.

The standard safety features include full-length curtain airbags and stability control with hill-start assist. Ford Edge also offers a blind-spot monitor system, cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and collision warning.
