Quick Look

The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is one of the more practical SUVs on the market. What’s peculiar about this is that its price sits comfortably at $51,580, which is reserved mainly for luxury vehicles. The most practical aspect of this vehicle is beyond a doubt its 5.3-litre V8 FlexFuel engine, which can produce 326 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque when running on E85. The vehicle’s cabin space and comfort are excellent attributes as well, even though cabin itself is not particularly attractive.

Full Review

The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe comes from a long line of SUVs that have existed since before even the Traverse entered the market. In today’s world, however, the most prevailing problem is affordability, and one of the issues that plagues SUVs is the fact that they are often expensive. The Tahoe is no exception to that rule, being priced at $51,580. That being said, it’s an excellent truck-like vehicle that is both powerful and comfortable, despite being a little less attractive than it should at such a high price.

On the outside, the 2014 Tahoe features somewhat inexpressive yet neatly-chiselled sheetmetal that nice complements the well-recognized Chevrolet face, which consists of twin horizontal grille sections separated by the brand’s badge. You’ll also notice the car’s bulging hood and big wheels and tires, which give the SUV a tough-to-ignore attitude that makes it look almost like government vehicle when painted black. The exterior is rounded off by Tahoe’s flush headlights, smooth wrap-around bumper, lower air dam and steeply-raked windshield, contributing to a low 0.36 coefficient of drag, which practically allows this car to fly. It sure is big, but it’s also sexy.

On the inside, the Tahoe has a little more hard plastic than should be acceptable in a vehicle like this, but the interior is big and every single piece seems to serve a purpose. The seat upholstery patterns are attractive enough, but the soft leather seating that you get in the higher trims is the best. The dash is attractive too, with its blue-backlit controls and white-backlit instruments. Not surprisingly, getting in and out of Tahoe's third-row seats is very easy, even for bigger individuals. To get in, you can either remove that second-row bench, using the power-release fold-and-tumble mechanism, or head through the walkway between the optional second-row captain's chairs. You can also get second-row heated seats and a navigation system with touchscreen functionality.

The Tahoe's sole engine offering is a 5.3-liter V8. For improves performance and efficiency, it features variable valve timing, Active Fuel Management and FlexFuel capability. When running on E85, which is an 85-per cent ethanol and 15-per cent gasoline combo, fuel economy drop by around 25 per cent, while power and torque increase. The vehicle comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, which is unfortunately the only option available.

Overall, however, the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is a decent vehicle that suffers only from two things – being too expensive and having a slightly cheap-looking cabin. Still, if you need a large SUV and you have enough cash to afford it, then by all means – give it a look!

Power and Performance:

All 2014 Chevrolet Tahoes come with a 5.3-liter V8 generating 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission transmits power through the rear wheels on 2WD models or all four wheels on 4WD models. The 4WD Tahoe is offered with a choice of either a traditional two-speed transfer case or a single-speed unit without low-range gearing (not available on LTZ). A locking rear differential is standard for the Tahoe's two upper trims and is optional for the Tahoe LS.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Chevy Tahoe's interior has more hard plastic than we'd like, but there's a lot of interior to cover and it's all quite durable and probably perfectly suited to its use. The seat upholstery patterns look nice, we like the optional soft leather seating, and the dash is attractive with its blue-backlit controls and white-backlit instruments. Getting into and out of the Tahoe's 3rd-row seats is easy, even for less-than-nimble adults, either through the power release fold-and-tumble mechanism on the standard 2nd-row bench seat or with the walkway between the optional 2nd-row captain's chairs. Other appreciated features include the available 2nd-row heated seats and the excellent navigation system with its touch-screen operation.

Safety features:

Occupant protection comes from six airbags and OnStar telematics, while LTZ models offer a blind spot monitoring system. The Tahoe also comes equipped with ABS and stability control with newly added trailer sway control and hill start assist.

The Tahoe received an overall 4-star rating in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests. That rating combines a 5-star front- and side-impact score with a 3-star rollover score, owning to the Tahoe's tall proportions.
