Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala offers the kind of luxury a sedan of this nature needs. It’s stylish, powerful and packed with special features. The best part is its undeniably modern design that stands tall above its predecessors and current competition.

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala is every bit as stylish and feature-rich as anything else from this manufacturer. It’s been a while since we’ve last seen this car, but the wait was worth it since the new incarnation wisely eschews mediocrity of the older models by improving on nearly everything. So, if you’re looking for a quality sedan with a relatively affordable price, you’ll find it right here. Its rivals, like Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion and many others, have definitely much to contend with.

Thanks to John Cafaro and his talented design team, the 2014 Impala now has a ridiculously lengthy hood, sculpted face and a roof long enough to be considered a semi-fastback. The sexy new front is a standout in particular thanks to the car’s well-placed projector-beam headlights. If that’s not enough, the ultra-modern LTZ trim gets HID headlights and LED daytime running lights, which make the car even more futuristic. Some of the features include 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels, adding more style to the already superb look.

On the inside, you get an absolutely luxurious cabin with high-quality materials, like leather and suede microfiber, as well as appealing design dominating the space. And if you dim the lights a little, you’ll love the look even more. The neon blue lighting trim, combined with chrome time, make everything seem so sophisticated, it’s almost too good to be true. Feature-wise, you get multi-facetted gauges and a 4.2-inch touchscreen that allows you to change colours. You also get a well-put-together climate and infotainment system in the centre stack that is incredibly easy to use. Chevrolet designers sure knew what they were doing with this one.

But, as is always the case, good design needs to be backed by a good engine. Luckily, the new Chevrolet Impala offers a choice of three. The best one is clearly the 3.6-litre V6 because it can produce the impressive 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. The torque number is slightly on the lower side, but combined with a six-speed automatic transmission, it delivers plenty of power. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine can produce 196 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, which is definitely a much weaker choice than the latter engine – but still a good one. The somewhat stranger engine choice is the 2.4-litre Ecotec four-cylinder, which is the most fuel-efficient option thanks to the benefit eAssist.

Overall, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is exactly the kind of luxury you may be looking for. It’s stylish, powerful and packed with option. If you haven’t considered this sedan yet, then add it to your list.

Power and Performance:

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is standard on all three trim levels of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala. It's rated at 195 hp and 187 pound-feet of torque.

A 3.6-liter V6 rated at 305 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque is optional on the LT and LTZ models.

Late in 2013, the mild hybrid Impala eAssist will debut with a 182-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a small 15-hp electric motor that operates in certain conditions to save fuel.

A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is front-wheel drive.

In Edmunds performance testing, the V6 Impala accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, which is about average for a large sedan. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway, which is slightly below average for this class. The 2.5-liter earns an estimated 21 city/31 highway and 25 mpg combined rating, while the more frugal 2.4-liter should come in at 25/35.

Interiors and Special Features:

Active noise cancelation in 4-cylinder versions is just one example of the lengths Chevy product planners have gone to offer Impala customers a luxury-like experience. A quick look inside reveals attractive, upscale materials in an appealing design, and, like some of our editorial staff, the interior looks even better in the dark. Ice-blue cabin lighting and chrome trim with "bleed-through" lighting add to the sophisticated feel, and the instrument panel features multi-dimensional gauges and a 4.2-inch screen with configurable colors. We found the seats, some of which are covered in leather and sueded microfiber, to be both comfortable and attractive. And the climate and infotainment (radio) controls on the center stack are big, clearly marked and easy to use.

Safety features:

While other big sedans have marched ahead in safety scores and equipment, the Impala had lagged. That changes with the 2014 model, which adopts a whole range of new technology for active and passive protection.

From ten airbags in all, to standard OnStar, the Impala could deliver the same excellent crash-test scores as the Buick LaCrosse that runs on the same platform. It's already earned a top five-star overall rating from the federal government, including five-star ratings in frontal and side impact, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has only released its basic frontal and side impact test results for the Impala so far--both 'good.'

Beyond the basics, the Impala's been brought up to speed with a suite of standard or available features like blind-spot monitors; lane-departure warning system; adaptive cruise control; a rearview camera and rear parking sensors; and a forward-collision warning system.

The Impala is also the first Chevrolet model to get full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, as well as a radar-based Crash Imminent Braking feature that will help intervene and apply the brakes to help avoid a crash or lessen its severity.

If there's a quibble with the Impala's safety package, it comes down to two features we think are essential on family cars, given the competition and given how most drivers can use help in driving more safely. Bluetooth is standard on the V-6 car, but not on the base LS; likewise, a rearview camera's an option on the Impala LT, and only standard once you've moved up to the LTZ. Visibility's fine, but side-view and surround cameras are becoming the norm on cars like the less expensive Honda Accord.
