Admittedly, the crossover has lost some of its charm since its introduction back in 2008, but at least it has a very decent exterior design. The car benefits primarily from its somewhat sporty styling and visual cues borrowed from Chevy’s SUVs and sedans. The major attraction here is that everything about this car is unabashedly big – from its hefty headlights and taillights to its sizeable grille. In fact, it’s very similar to Chevy Traverse – though it lacks some of that car’s more elegant design features.
On the inside, the Equinox could benefit from a few upgrades since it’s not quite on the same level as the rest of the Chevy lineup, but it’s still very acceptable. The biggest detriment to the interior space is its outdated tech, such as the small screen at the centre of the instrument panel that looks as if it came straight from the ‘90s thanks to its outdated graphics. The seven-inch touchscreen, which you will find on the dashboard, is a little better since it allows the use of several modern features such as hands-free phone calls and audio streaming. However, it’s not in any shape or form revolutionary, so don’t expect too much.
The saving grace of this cabin is the fact that it’s spacious and comfortable enough to accommodate both adults and kids, which is great for a family car. And since this is a “mini” crossover, it comes with just five seats, but they are large enough to fit just about anyone. Cargo area could use a little more room, but you can still stuff it with plenty of items. Just don’t think of transporting anything too big.

And since the V-6 is not terribly economical, the choice between the two engines may be more clean-cut than you think. It basically comes down to whether you prefer power or efficiency.
One other area where the Equinox succeeds is in its safety equipment, which is quite remarkable. If you’re familiar with the look of the Chevrolet Traverse, then you’ll notice just how similar the two of them are. The Equinox just happens to look like a more down-to-earth version of that car. The features that help it stand out from the crowd are the slick details above its rounded tail and the unique layout of its headlights and grille. Otherwise, it’s basically a clone of every crossover you’ve ever seen. It may be a good-looking clone, but it is a clone all the same.

Its greatest fault lies in its outdated tech gadgetry, especially when it comes to the screen at the centre of the instrument panel. Sitting right between two gauges, this screen involves 1990s-style graphics that look colourless and uninspired by today’s standards – which is not a good thing at all.
On the other hand, the centre stack looks surprisingly good, thanks to a set of vents that neatly frame the controls. Higher trims also get a seven-inch touchscreen and IPod/USB audio interface, both of which are very easy to use.
In fact, there’s a whole range of special features to choose from. The base LS model comes with standard air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, sliding and reclining rear seats, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, Bluetooth, OnStar and a six-speaker system with a CD player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack.
The LT trim offers premium cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a touchscreen-equipped sound system. There’s also an LT trim that provides heated front seats, en eight-speaker Pioneer sound system, an eight-way power driver seat and automatic climate control.
Finally, there’s the LTZ model, which comes with leather upholstery and a whole set of safety features like rear parking sensors, lane departure warning system and more.
